View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - Character - .::STRIKE::.
01-11-2003, 01:39 PM
i'm in for this one :)
I have some precise ideas about my character ;) but i'll tell more next time i'll post.
01-11-2003, 01:42 PM
Ahh... i saw you lurking on the challenge thread. I wondered when you would join! :D
Whatever you do, it will most likely be up to your usual standard.
No pressure, of course!
01-11-2003, 05:27 PM
héhé thx erilaz ;)
Well let's start it. I choose to create a special creature named "The Swamp Keeper" from the haunted swamp of the Dead Marshes, where Gollum, Sam and Frodo where going across.
In the movie we have seen a Nazgul flying around the swamp, but i thought : All these undead are not kept just by Nazguls who are already alot busy with their tasks... So let's just imagine that the 3 companions met a strange creature named "Ar-Lum keeper of the undeads" during their travel. This one would be a mix of different textures like some bones found around the swamp, flesh of the deads, and some grass and mud, the whole thing kept by roots growing from the earth to keep him in an entire entity... ;) sounds nice ?
This one will finally be a living thing, without anything living on him, and untouchable coz even destroyed, he could reappear by finding bones and flesh around... A kinda immortal spirit not created by Sauron, but here since centuries, and the beginning of the middle Earth... A kinda Death Ripper in fact... Keeping the deads were they are and neutral with everything and everybody. A free soul, but ready to give you the death and steel your spirit.
here are my first images :
I didn't use any UV maps for now, but just alot of different layers on my color maps, specular and bumps. I did that in something like 12 hours.
I have to add all the different mud, roots, grass and head of course ;)
nice start strike and interestig story:thumbsup:
01-11-2003, 06:17 PM
Nice idea, and nice execution so far. What's his head going to be like?
01-11-2003, 06:23 PM
what a gret start! good solid story too. this should be excellent to watch
01-11-2003, 06:34 PM
Great start! I shall keep a close eye on this one. :applause:
01-11-2003, 06:42 PM
is that what i think it is hanging between his legs?
01-11-2003, 07:19 PM
hmm... not my intention... it was flesh in fact...
Let's have a look to a final preview shot :
Original Background by Ted Nasmith : http://www.tolkien.com.br/imagens/ilust/sda/tn_through_the_marshes.JPG
I like the environment...did you make that? the character looks cool too...have you had this in the making for a while or what cause your kicking the crap out of the time limit....great job:thumbsup:
01-11-2003, 08:24 PM
Man, thats a great start and an interesting character, I like the textures.
But I have one really important not to be ignored piece of life saving advice.......
Slow down dude, its like 8 weeks until the next challenge :bounce:
01-12-2003, 02:11 AM
01-12-2003, 02:51 AM
Holy Jeebus man! You move to fast! Great work, I love it!
01-12-2003, 03:01 AM
Definetly, I gotta start modelling...
Great work STRIKE.
01-12-2003, 03:35 AM
Great to see you in one this one, Strike!
And can I say - WOW! :applause: Your character so far is looking AWESOME!!! I particularly like the lighting on it - it's really showing off all the great tones you've put into the textures! Fantastic work so far, I'm really looking forward to seeing this one develop!!!
Good luck for the rest of the challenge!
01-12-2003, 04:44 PM
well thx ! :)
Leigh : have a good challenge too ! ;)
adding some roots :
01-13-2003, 06:09 AM
Adding pustules and mud on the skin with particles on surface. This method will permise me to animate this mud later, and then showing the move it will have from top to down, like a kinda heavy liquid falling on the feet of Ar-Lum.
Pustules are a kinda very dangerous weapon of this creature, coz only a touch of his hand will probably give you some bad disease driving you to a long death if however you can escape this swamp keeper.
Problem of this method, is the render times are very long... Some 4 hours to render this image :
01-13-2003, 06:14 AM
01-13-2003, 06:17 AM
looks awesome, i'm certain you prolly already know and have done this, but for the mud stuff have you tried these methods?
take a subd'd version of your model, fairly randomly select polys, invert the selection and delete the polys, then take the remaining polys and extrude them out once, subd them and voila instant globby wet surface (works great for condensation too).
an altrenative that owuld be animatable, might be to clone the model, smooth shift it smaller, and then use a good displacement map, then you could get away with far fewer particles of the actual mud, just animate teh displacement with a slight vertical movememnt, maybe mix a couple of displacements, so taht a smaller displacement moves y negative over a larger much slower moving displacement.
anyhow really increibly great work, and i'm amazed at how fast you managed to model and texture this so well!
01-13-2003, 07:56 AM
great work strike
are you toooooooo fast or i'm toooooooo slow:eek:
01-13-2003, 08:03 AM
great work man!
Please upload to the challenge website

C'est une publicité L'Oréal en France. L'Oréal parce que je le vaux bien... Je sais pas si c'est les mêmes au Québec. bref... ;)
01-13-2003, 10:51 PM
I just fell flat on my face.
C'est déjà fini??
This is simply .. awsome!!
So what about a wireframe?
And some poses too :)
01-13-2003, 11:34 PM

Here are the wireframes... Not conventional i admit ;)

01-13-2003, 11:40 PM

01-13-2003, 11:54 PM
curious, isn't it ?? :)
.::STRIKE::. .........let me say that.....................................................................................................................................:eek: B W O O O O O G O O O O O W A A A A AH ........oh u bastard!!!! How u can dare !!! How can u be so ......so..........so..........:eek:
OK.....u are a true master.....of imagination,style.art,and modeling.................toooo gooood.:buttrock:
Bravo Mister StriKe! You know, if you want you can make tutorials, because you're ****in'good! ;) I've just realized what we can do with hypervoxels... It's really amazing.
See ya dude! ^^
01-14-2003, 01:46 PM
Again, such a dense mesh !!!
I have no idea how you can manage that!
Don't tell me you simply hit "metaform subdivide" just to mess with our heads ;) Or that you use the Drag tool :D
It kicks so much ass. :airguitar

Great work."L'Oréal, parce que je le vaut bien", pour les anglophones c'est "L'Oréal, because I'm worth it", tout simplement.
Like Koma, I'm wondering what are you going to do the next 7 weeks !
01-14-2003, 02:25 PM
Oz : Thx guy ! but far to be a master ;) How are you doing ? Your entry is gonna be great another time for sure !
DKM : Content que j'ai pu t'apprendre qque chose ! qui l'eu cru ;) But no tuts for now, coz i'm a little overbooked actually ;)
Joril : Well, to explain my method, i start from basic objects like generally capsules and giving them different basic forms with Dragnet on Lightwave, then i use different tools like quicksaw, flswrinkles to modify some polys, and subdivide step by step to obtain a thing like that. I also use some tools like railextrude for roots and different objects like cylindric, or just sometimes simply spline draws to extrude in something.
m@ : merci pour la traduc ;) What am i gonna do next 7 weeks ? finish this one, and why not making another creature.. ;) if i have time besides :)
01-14-2003, 07:10 PM
are you trying to be the first one to finish?
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
01-14-2003, 07:22 PM
Ur syle seems like sketching with 3d software. You give dynamic and ramdomness of a pencil skech but with a 3d software and with texturing i think this is a very good feature
GOD!! I LOVE UR STYLE!!!
01-14-2003, 10:49 PM
levin : too fast ? but if i do 2 creatures ? can i ? come on ! ;) :)
Carlocki : Thanks ! that's exactly what i wanted to do, so i'm happy of your comment :) (pssst : Everything is about textures ;) That's why i couldn't dissociate for this one modeling and texturing in the same time.)
Oz : thx ! I love yours too you know ;)
Well. Another render. This time i begin the environment. I used one Hdri for the BG, and for the ground : Saslite included in Lightwave. I have to add now some water, trees, etc...
About Ar-Lum : I added some arrows on him to show that even an elf arrow cannot kill him like an orc ;)
You can also see a sword, lost by some Gondor Warrior, who probably lied now in the swamps... Sad story... But too long to tell ;)
It doesn't seem to disturb Ar-Lum to have a sword in his body (euh i mean the body of a dead he found), for centuries...
Sorry for the bad quality, but i didn't activate antialias for this image.
01-15-2003, 12:59 AM
I'm no expert, but this is fantastic. You have been doing this 24/7 since the challenge was announced, right?
Wow seeing it progress since the begining is cool! I love it!
How much time have you put into this thing total so far do ya think? The weapons sticking out of the sides add alot to it! It looks great!
01-15-2003, 09:46 AM
piouuuu !!!
you should start the march challenge now...nothing more to do !
maybe the render is to " clipping" ?
it looks like there are no anti-aliasing !
you should retouch it on photoshop to smooth it
Oooh, man, it is very cool! :bounce:
01-15-2003, 11:55 PM
I bet you swallowed a V12 Vanquish engine or you are t800 himself! you finished your task even before I start my thread!
anyway, very EXCELENT ARTWORK, surely I can say: .::STRIKE::. STRIKES BACK!
01-16-2003, 06:14 AM
hey ! Thx Ila ! :) I'll keep an eye on your thread friend ;)
Thanx for all your comments guys :)
Here's one of a final version With AA, HDRI, Hypervoxels on surface, Saslite furs and hairs, And volumetrics ground fog.
More renders to come ;)
01-16-2003, 06:33 AM
what a speed .......:buttrock:
great work...........what you will do in the next 5 weeks!!!
...How you did the fur and hair????
nice compo that you got here , congratulation:thumbsup:  what are you planning for the rest ??
01-16-2003, 08:49 AM
speedproject award goes to you right away.
01-16-2003, 11:04 AM
01-16-2003, 11:12 AM
Absolutely stunning Strike.
My only critique at this stage is the eyes. It may be just the glint off them, but he looks a little surprised! Not the sort of thing you expect from such a beast.
I love the contrast of the hands/feet to the rest of him. Wonderful.:D
01-16-2003, 08:51 PM
can you show us ur texture tree?
im curious as 2 how you did it...??
01-16-2003, 09:03 PM
Fantastic!!...superb texture and modeling work strike!!...and your soooo fast!!
I love the weapons stuck in his belly, very good touch.
The only thing i might change would be the pose...perhapes something more dramatic....to show his pain!!
01-16-2003, 09:11 PM
erilaz : thx ! :) Well in fact i just wanted this eyes for Ar-Lum, but.. hmmm... i'll think of it for final pictures of this challenge ;)
dutch : well, i have exactly 5 different layers for the color map, and to show you that, will not change alot of things... The volumetrics hypervoxels on the surface do all the thing in fact ;)
Fetus23 : thx :) About the pose, well he's not suffering you know, coz he's already dead. Ar-Lum is just an entity which use body of dead people to appear physically.. So trust me : he's not suffering at all ;) (No creatures suffered during this thread ;) )
NEW CREATURE NOW !
Nothing can stop him now!
01-16-2003, 09:18 PM
Well as i have alot of time left, i decided to create another Middle Earth creature.
I choose this time to make a Wood-eater from Fangorn forrest.
This one would be an old one too, like the Ents. A creature that only eat WOOD !!!
Nightmare of the Ents, he would seek for some good wood flesh to live. A character probably not interested in humans, hobbits, elves, dwarves or by anything living except wood. He would probably be of a big size to dare fighting an Ent or just crush a tree to eat the whole thing like a clean tooth... Well something that would walk on you just because you're on his way...
His name : Wynrorn the Unforrester :)
half an hour for this :
01-16-2003, 11:37 PM
I really like this concept  and well, nothing to say yet on your model, no doubt on the right way :)
01-17-2003, 12:12 AM
Hold on STRIKE, I'm getting some popcorn!! :D
01-17-2003, 02:40 AM
Ha ha ! you a crazy man! I'd agree withte sugestion of a new pose though on that other guy, he looked like a friggin' stiff!
I look forward to his mouth!
01-17-2003, 08:05 AM
some body stop this guy...:scream:
good work strike ...let see what you will do ....:bounce: :bounce:
01-17-2003, 11:00 PM
:) ahhh... Week end.... :) :) :) Things gonna start :
01-18-2003, 12:08 AM
Tnx 4 ur kind words!BUT ...YES! U are a master....i think that ur style is unique! So rusty and dirty....the proportion of things and the colours......GO! GIVE US MORE!!! TLINK*
01-18-2003, 07:00 PM
Thanks Oz my friend :) but if i am one, then you, you're a god ! ;)
Update, starting texturing :
01-18-2003, 08:57 PM
I got Heart Attack
01-18-2003, 10:01 PM
you're ok Ila ? ;)
01-18-2003, 10:32 PM
01-18-2003, 10:33 PM
*damn that Lightwave render engine*
Great! I really like the skin texture, with bump disp, shininess maps and all, well done:thumbsup: .. well it looked like there was displacement, but now that I look at that latest image, I think there's not or what? anyway in the avant-dernier (??in english??) et celui d'avant render it looks really great, like a very detailed mesh.
01-19-2003, 03:34 PM
m@ : no displacement maps ;)
another update : adding hairs, creating different textures for the back and face... Alot of work to do... but sorry, this time i take my time ;)
01-19-2003, 04:22 PM
Man, this is just kickass! You are on fire!
01-19-2003, 05:59 PM
that is awesome but texture those teeth!
01-20-2003, 10:54 PM
Working more on the mesh and on textures again. I have to add details now :)
Hi Version here (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wood_eater010.jpg)
01-20-2003, 11:01 PM
absolutely crazy! He almost disconcerning - scratch that he is! His soft eyes against the rock is especially odd. As are his top teeth - a bit of more detailed modeling will remedy that easily.
The textures simply [rock] are great! ;)
01-20-2003, 11:04 PM
oh my god, that is amazing! did you use a 3d paint tool to texture that? If so, which one and what brushes do you use?
01-20-2003, 11:30 PM
Sorry, I don't believe it. You must have made this character out of clay painted it then took a photo!!!
Dam that render is so good.
01-21-2003, 11:34 PM
Well in fact i didn't use any 3dpaint tool. I just texture with procedurals, photos, and some UVs on photoshop.
another update : starting to wear this guy.
Hi version here (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wood_eater011.jpg)
01-21-2003, 11:38 PM
Looking GREAT, Strike!! :D:D:D
I particularly like the textures on the waistcoat - very cool
Awesome work, as always
The waistcoat texture is mesmerizing
Keep going, more more :P
01-21-2003, 11:50 PM
No 3D Paint tool, huh? Cool! I guess that would speed things up a bit not having to do it by hand. Regardless, awesome texturing and lighting.
01-22-2003, 12:36 AM
Wow that is awesome! I love those textures!:airguitar
01-22-2003, 12:49 AM
strike... u is too good! damn you! you have to do a tutorial on the way you model and texture.
01-22-2003, 11:01 PM
Classical render :
Composite with Worley G2 to give a movie aspect :
01-22-2003, 11:07 PM
That looks fantastic, Strike :applause:
01-23-2003, 05:14 AM
Wow totally awesome!
01-23-2003, 08:50 AM
did you tell that he is Tree Eater or MAN EATER?! ;)
(hey, mine is Man eater!)
01-23-2003, 09:01 AM
yea right Ila :) But maybe if one Elf try to kill this Wynrorn to defend trees, he probably would have some troubles with him... that's what happened to this one :)) Poor elf :) Oops i forgot the hairs ! It will be repaired soon :)
01-23-2003, 10:29 AM
01-23-2003, 10:48 AM
holy crap that's insane! I hope you're updating your challenge entry on the challenge site
fricking remarkable texturing job... loving it carry on!
01-23-2003, 12:36 PM
Holy CRAP, dude... thats SWEET! :D
Damn... i wish i could paint textures like that..
01-23-2003, 02:08 PM
man that last image rocks....you may have just inspired me to join in on this challenge...that worley G2 makes an amazing difference...excellent work mate...keep it up...
01-23-2003, 02:19 PM
1337 kickass w00t ;) :applause:
Don't follow the lightssss, good Hobbitses...I liked your first one too
now that's neat! I didn't like it very much at first, but now it's looking *ss-kicking!
01-23-2003, 04:16 PM
for god's sake stop embarrassing us! ;) you are a maniac.
01-23-2003, 09:10 PM
wow i can't to see it:eek:
01-23-2003, 09:40 PM
Real cool.Rugged and tough.Nice textures and good modeling. But I was wondering what the belt is for? There does'nt seem to be a reason for it? Or is it just for looks for now? Or do you plan on something more involving the belt?
Also the face while real cool, looks too much like the troll from LOTR,I thought the rules were to create something more original? But then again it's a cousin or something,so it's cool.:)
Very nice job overall,real intense.
01-23-2003, 11:39 PM
wow ! thanks all for your replies !
hexodam : :p
lildragon : thanks for telling me, i always forgot to update my challenge entry. That's an honor you comment my work !
Sir_Manfred : not painted, but most of my textures are procedurals, except Wynrorn head, belt, and the dead head that are both UVs+Procedural
Bezerker75 : Yep ! G2 is really a great plug for LW ! :) It avoid to go through Photoshop for post-prod, coz with it you can easily modify colors, noise, saturation, etc... direct live after rendering. Great thing !
Dreamwave : thanks !
m@ : Do you mean you didn't like it before !!!??? and you told me the contrary !!! lol Thanks man ! I like alot your ape also !
somlor : maniac ?... mhmmm... yea i'm surely a maniac ! ;)
sunlion : thx !
Vladvrz : The belt is for something i didn't modelize yet. you'll see ;) but not so hard to imagine for a creature like this one :)
Well, i don't think Wynworn is looking like the troll of the movie. Wynworn is a Trees killer, an Ent destroyer, an ennemy of the elves and Ents most of all. Maybe his skin is near the trolls one, but he has ears, trolls don't have, hairs, he wears a coat, belt, etc... but yes he his approximatively the same size as a Troll, but thin like a tree and not big like the troll cave we can see in the movie.
thanks for your comment
Updating the dead head : adding hairs
01-23-2003, 11:43 PM
It looks amazing Strike!! Perhapes the lips could be more defined and textured differently than the rest of him...nice and wet. That would be my only suggestion.....Truley amazing work!
01-24-2003, 12:14 AM
Truly amazing talent!!!
Can we see him in a different lighting? Perhaps some midnight scene, while it's raining, with some traces of fire in the distance, as if a war just broke out around him.. Although, It looks phenominal nonetheless.. It's just a thought.
Keep up the good work.
01-24-2003, 02:04 AM
Hey Strike,it's looking intense. Looks fierce and bad arse.
The one thing I could say would be to add some more size or girth to the lips, but that's just a taste thing. Textures are spot on nice as well.
Well I'll let you go add a few more of that all imporatnt detailing work. Cheers to the creature.
01-24-2003, 06:01 AM
very creepy stuff:beer: ..i can smell his bad breath through my monitor:D
Pfiou ! et repfiiiiou !!!
How did you place your lights ? This is what stuns me the most, the lighting, it looks like a real picture.
Of course the textures look great too, bravo.
01-24-2003, 06:52 AM
just incredible work... modelling, lighting, texturing hair fx... just too damn good!
01-24-2003, 08:36 AM
he/it is f*cking ugly... verry nice work. I like the head hanging on his chest:twisted:
01-25-2003, 02:01 AM
01-25-2003, 10:34 AM
this is so incredible.
I thought you can't beat the first Char, but you did.
I wonder what will come now??? ;)
 waiting for your next one... ;)
01-25-2003, 02:03 PM
Which renders do you prefer ? 1,2 or 3 :
the most detail is in 2 so my fav is surely 2 - it looks great like a paintig not a rendering :):applause:
01-25-2003, 02:21 PM
2 0r 3 can't decide.Keep up the good work.
01-25-2003, 02:48 PM
01-25-2003, 03:48 PM
3 is most interesting, but doesn't show off the details well.
I totally agree with Lunatique. Maybe the shadows are too black, and he looks very "stony" in it.
01-25-2003, 04:39 PM
#1 is to flat
#2 shows the model in the best way
#3 Is most interesting.
My favorite entry. Not only 'couse of great skils but also 'couse it's looks like model for movie. Same mood. Amazing.
01-25-2003, 11:03 PM
Not easy uh.... I think i'm gonna mix a part of the 1st with the 2nd one. Something like this :
01-25-2003, 11:57 PM
I like... Although the hands seems to grab my attention at first, I'm not sure but maybe the blurr effect doesn't look right.. Does this seem to distract anyone else?
The lighting is much improved!
Good job buddy!!
01-26-2003, 01:19 AM
Dude has a comb-over! I love it!
01-26-2003, 07:27 PM
01-26-2003, 08:35 PM
OOOO!... he changed his diet....run, run like hell !
01-26-2003, 08:55 PM
Well Strike, now what? I mentioned earlier I think your creation is one fine piece of work. But what's up next, what will you do beyond these two creations?anything? Hope so,it's been nice to view what you have thus far.

01-26-2003, 10:57 PM
01-28-2003, 06:14 AM
01-28-2003, 11:18 AM
Last one rules.
that's great strike! but he looks more like a frightening flesheater than a tree eater !
01-28-2003, 12:06 PM
let's finish m@ ;) There's one month again right ? héhé :)
but you're so fast ;) I though it was already finished... SO keep it up!
01-28-2003, 12:16 PM
I went too fast for the first one ;) But i'll take all the time left for this one :) Thanks to you ! :)
01-28-2003, 06:07 PM
Very nice man!
Les félicitations, votre travail est grand :bounce:
01-28-2003, 06:52 PM
Man, I don't know how you do it. 2 Characters already? And I've yet to really get ONE going. lol
01-28-2003, 11:29 PM
fantastic texture, make it super real !!!
01-29-2003, 01:00 AM
thx for feedback ! :)
here is wireframe from the last render.
Done already?!!! I'm still working on my textures....:annoyed: Great job....are you doing another?
01-29-2003, 03:49 AM
Hey cool stuff Strike, whats up with the broad daylight renders, id imagine him in a much more damp and scary enviroment such as in a deep dark swamp or something
01-29-2003, 04:03 AM
You should sell prints of your wireframe renders. :D
01-29-2003, 09:24 AM
LOL thos pwireframes are wicked.. awesome work to.. is that all painted or????
01-29-2003, 10:07 AM
Remi : No, not finished yet :) But i didn't post wireframes for a while, and i still have to do his feet and the environment ;)
Another character ? yea, and it will be included in Wynworn final images. I can't say more for now. But i'll have 2 characters in a scene :)
Lukashi : thanks ! Well, it's coming ;) Wynrorn is a trees eater, and he probably live in Fangorn, or near it, so the environnment will be like this. I don't have finished yet ;)
Psyhke : lol How much ? ;) Well i just thought it was more nice like that. Usually we put wireframe on a simple Background, and there's nothing esthetic in it... So that's why i just wanted to make it different ;)
Mangled Poly : Sure it's painted !!! lol well in fact it's scanned, and modified under photoshop for the Background. That's all ;)
01-29-2003, 06:07 PM
Heya STRIKE great work! I must ask: is there a possibility
to put some more work into modeling arms, and probably
some area around eyes? With such a great texturing i think
it's advisable thing to do, because right now texturing excels modeling too much. Just a frendly suggestion;)
01-29-2003, 06:20 PM
I agree,I think the texturing is a bit too zombified, but that's a taste thing,it is done very well. The modeling too is good, but could be more defined. It is a very good piece of work, but just seems to need more detailed work on muscle shapes etc,etc to be excellent.Anyways just some constructive crits.Very good work none the less.
01-29-2003, 07:08 PM
Thanks for the advices to both of you Mandrake and Magnusv ;)
Well it was in my ambition to do it. In fact in the beginning i just wanted to have this quick mesh, with not alot of details, to go faster in the texturing work i like alot. Now, i think i have the good stuffs for it (my opinion, even if i can surely do better), so i'm gonna detailed all the mesh :) Surely not so perfect as your modeling Mandrake, but i'll try to make it more defined !
Thanks again to suggest that so important thing ! :)
01-30-2003, 05:59 AM
Starting to put details on the mesh.
01-30-2003, 01:31 PM
Holy Crap!!! This awsome!! Now I won't get in this contest anymore...I'll never do better:scream:
01-30-2003, 03:09 PM
Yo, we have a little surprise for you over at Scifi-meshes ;)
01-30-2003, 04:15 PM
oh my !!! thanks Viper !! That's a great honor !! Really ! ;) answer on SciFi-meshes.com :) Another time : thanks to you and your team ! :)
01-30-2003, 04:20 PM
Not a problem mate....Just making sure the correct people get it ;)
Now let's see some more! :bounce:
01-30-2003, 11:15 PM

01-31-2003, 11:35 AM

02-01-2003, 03:45 PM
Final images (sick of it... and testing other techniques : follow the thread to know more)
02-01-2003, 03:51 PM
well.. a long time i didn't make sculpture... 10 years ago i think... So here we go... I choose this time to make a Pet... Sauron's Pet :) This one is the beast of doing everything to him, etc...
Techniques is not 3D but traditional sculpture on modelling clay, hardening by contact with air. All done with hands and this kitchen knife :) (Sorry i loose all my instruments... so i have to do with what i find )
first images (2 hours of work modeling)
02-01-2003, 04:34 PM
Whoa, the clay model kickass!!!
BTW, can I use the last image you have of the Wynrorn to put in the SFM Hall of Fame??
02-01-2003, 04:38 PM
sure Viper ;) I'm gonna update the wip there too ;)
02-01-2003, 05:12 PM
hey strike, great character/image. I prefer the one where he's in action, really cool!
nice to see some traditional sculptures to, I wish I had a little clay by my side right now, inspirational work!
02-01-2003, 05:26 PM
looks cool! amazes me how ur textures could add so much details to such simple model.......
02-01-2003, 05:28 PM
SMy friend, that's lookin WAY axcellent. you're fast man . . .
textures look cool. one thing is that the hair of the hairy objects looks to crisp .. . . almost as if it's non-aa . .. but uther then that, :buttrock:
02-01-2003, 11:56 PM
thx guys ! :)
fellah : i wish to see your clay work one day, coz when i see your CG, it's always awesome !
funnydoodle : thanks ! :)
Equinoxx : Yea i saw that thing with hair... Something i don't rules... yet ;) Thanks for your comment my friend, and good luck for your great challenge !
Well i think it's over for me. I will not have time to do anything else, even if i have one month left, due to personnal activities and duty... So, i wish you all a great challenge, keep in mind TOLKIEN and his fabulous world, and have fun in your work !
See you all later... i hope next challenge ! :D
Bye all ! :)
Final image for my challenge :
HI VERSION HERE (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wood_eater028.jpg)
02-02-2003, 01:07 AM
Wow, that came out beautifully, Strike :applause: :applause:
Both creatures are really fantastic!
I particularly love the skin textures on the Tree Eater :)
I'd really love to see some kind of "behind the scenes" thing of these characters, because your work has always had a really distinctive style - I'd really love to see how you go about making your textures :)
I do think that your models could possibly have benefitted from a little more detail modelling-wise, especially with the Tree Eater, but the fabulous texturing does really make up for it.
Your lighting on the Tree Eater is also very nice - what kind of lighting setup do you use? It looks like you are using a combination of area lights and perhaps distant lights... but I really can't be too sure... I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know what your lighting setup in Layout is :)
02-02-2003, 01:35 AM
Thanks for the compliment Leigh.
Well let's go for the lights setup.
First i have 2 lights for the scene, plus one Hdri (beach probe, available here (http://www.debevec.org/Probes/) )
Puting that in the Backdrop imageworld with 25% of luminosity
Then setting the GI at 2% in Global and 70% in GLI
After that, i use the default light of LW, and changed it in area light, sizing it at the half of its normal size, pointing from the head to the feet of the character like this : click here (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wood_eater_lights002.jpg)
Then i add a shadow spot light behind and top of the character with a LI of 50% and basic parameters for it like this : click here (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wood_eater_lights001.jpg)
Doing all this work, render is not yet perfect, and i use G2 to create a desaturation after one rendering to see how will be the render (like Viper preview). Always with G2 i contrast the whole image to find the right thing between dark and white balance. Render is ready to put in Cgtalk thread ;)
Note you can do all the G2 work i just tell, on Photoshop, After Effects or any video post effects tools. G2 is just easy to have cool renders and avoiding to go through post effects under photoshop in my case. Great plug ! :)
02-02-2003, 01:49 AM
Looks great Strike!
You've got one of the best entries in this challenge.
I personally like the render in the middle-bottom-left best.
You've still got over a month left!!! :surprised
02-02-2003, 01:58 AM
Wow Strike, thanks so very much for all the info   I REALLY appreciate it, because I totally suck at lighting
Thank you very much for sharing that knowledge, it is very kind of you :D
02-02-2003, 02:28 AM
You keep amazing Strike!!
Thanks for the inside peek too!
I better refill my popcorn here...
02-02-2003, 05:32 AM
Whoa!! That kicks ass!! I love the texturing work...good luck on the voting :)
Good luck to me aswell...seems I had a cool Idea
02-02-2003, 06:12 AM
Good lord those are great! Great work man! Good luck in the voting!

02-02-2003, 10:40 PM
In additional shot no 2 make him eat some tree:)
But he should be careful not to bite ent;)
02-02-2003, 11:45 PM
time to sleep... tired... no more creatures for some days ;)
Shot N°2 :
02-04-2003, 12:05 AM
02-04-2003, 01:02 AM
man, that's incredible... I wish I could just give you my model and have you texture it....
02-05-2003, 07:55 AM
Just a test of light and texture shading i wanted to share with you. A kinda plastic/jade material to use for a statue. Nothing exceptionnal, but just for fun, and because i wanted to test some subsurfacescattering after the post of Fellah ! :) :)
yop : http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wood_eater033.jpg
02-05-2003, 11:35 AM
Wow, now that's a character I'd LOVE to animate!!!
02-05-2003, 12:06 PM
well, who knows ;)
Final image : (this time i promise :) )
02-05-2003, 12:11 PM

02-05-2003, 01:18 PM
arghhh !! nooooo !!! don't give upppp !!!!!!!!! pleaseee !!!!! If you want i just throw this Wynrorn of death in my trash and then i will able to see your entry again !!! pleaaaaaassseeeeeee !!!!! lol :D
02-05-2003, 02:13 PM
what are you waiting for man? RIG HIM! ANIMATE THE BASTARD!!! :p heheh come on you have plenty of time ;)
02-05-2003, 04:23 PM
Would be great yea :) but no time left for me :( i'm sorry... That was my last image for the challenge. Anyway i'll try to do it later, but when........ don't know... :(
02-07-2003, 08:20 PM
Well.. finally i maybe have some times to do some animation, but nothing exceptionnal coz i suck with animation. A first shot of 10 seconds just for a test.
Divx 5.03 : CLICK HERE FOR ANIMATION (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wynrorn02.avi)
I have now to animate mouth and to continue the main scene.
02-07-2003, 10:29 PM
hey strike, cool SSS! is that G2?
btw, the divx dosen't work good for me, I see the intro text and a still of the character with music in the BG. no animation  (maybe it's my codec)
oh, and you have time to make one more character. so get to it! :)
02-07-2003, 10:36 PM
I get no animation too.
02-07-2003, 11:08 PM
gosh... i'm too bad... here's a quicktime this time : Here it is (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wynrorn.mov)
Fellah : Yea it's G2 :) but it was just a test, so it's far to be perfect ;)
02-09-2003, 11:34 PM
Well this time it's over.
Here's a demo of wynrorn in QT sorrenson 12,7Mo for 1:17 min
Sorry for the bad quality and bad sound... I really suck in video compression for the web....
Anyway... Try to enjoy the idea if the quality is not here :
HERE IS THE DEMO (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/wynrorn2.mov)
Thank you for trying.
02-11-2003, 03:06 PM
I HAVE TIME LEFT !!!!!
Get ready for the 3rd one !!!!
LOTR CHALLENGE RULLLEESSSSS !!!
(updating as soon as possible)
02-11-2003, 06:43 PM
Don't stop at 3 strike!!!...lets see more more more!!! you have 2 weeks left...thats 5 renders a day for 2 weeks... ;) The animation looks neat...i'd love to see his mouth close or a different expression on his face. Top notch stuff strike!!! its amazing and i wanna see more renders!!! :)
02-11-2003, 08:46 PM
Fetus : lol I don't think i'll have time to do 4 you know !! but who knows ?? ;)
Here we go. Let's introduce the background.
Here's Gal-Dig the Driller. Gal-dig is one character of the drillers race. Drillers are slaves of Saroumane, helping orcs and gobeling to dig deep in the earth to allow them to work. They are poor creature mixed of human and hobbits, so a size bigger than a hobbit but smaller as a human. Almost blind, their big eyes are just kinda optionnal organ... The main tool they use is their own hands, but sometimes they work with usual tools to dig. Sometimes, orcs kill some just for fun, or to eat some fresh meat... they are the exact signification of a slave. Saroumane stole their mind, so they're unable to think anything else than fear and pain...
Here's the start with no texturing, under lightwave. 4 hours of modeling.
02-11-2003, 08:48 PM
he reminds me of those blind mudokons form Abe's Exoddus
02-11-2003, 08:55 PM
U'r fast, man... Looks very nice, but please soften these creases on his cheeks and around the nose, they are bit too sharp IMO.
the side view looks a little bit strange but ure crazy fast -
02-11-2003, 09:16 PM
Fantastique..........Three for one.Excellent, this too will be extra fun.you go for it Strike.looking great.
02-11-2003, 11:13 PM
thanks guys :)
azazel : yea, i will modify this modeling ;) thx for the advice :)
starting texturing and hairs... well alot of work for this face...
02-12-2003, 01:03 AM
Lol, you're a machine Strike!!
Just let me get some more popcorn...
02-12-2003, 09:24 AM
02-12-2003, 09:54 AM
Me thinks You should make a scene with all Your characters at once, maybe chasing each other or something... but You'll have to use Massive if there'l be more characters;)
02-12-2003, 09:59 AM
how do you work this fast dude??
i like this new one the best: his dead eyes are really nice!! i am not too keen on the hair strands:they look a bit like they are sitting on top of his head. maybe add a few more where they come out of his head?- or add folicals to the scalp at that point. its shaping up wonderfully: and SO fast! your an inspiration :)
02-12-2003, 10:09 AM
thanks for the advices guys ! :)
Well in fact i'm not so fast i would like to be, coz i have a job besides that is not CG at all... but i can give you an indice : i'm just sleeping 4 to 5 hours max a day ;)
If only Challenges could be a full time for me ;) (dreaming...)
02-12-2003, 12:07 PM
so he does it afterall, a 3'rd character!! :) nice to see, very good start! the only thing that disturbs me is the nostrils. hard to explain what it is, maybe because the holes are so big and the skin around them are so "thin".. well, it's nothing! and the attachment of the ears! :wip:
but cool model so far, keep going. will be fun to see where you take him.
02-12-2003, 12:17 PM
I've figured it out. Strike has found an alien device that slows down time, so one day to us is 1 month Strike time. It's the only explanation.
02-12-2003, 12:24 PM
Maybe there's more than one Strike there? That'd also explain it;)
02-12-2003, 12:39 PM
Very nice work strike
Something about the images here and on the webpage carry a very unique theme.
Anyway sweet job
02-12-2003, 03:08 PM
well, another update.
Fellah : thx ! the last character i imagine
About the nose : let's see the following images, and tell me what you think.
Clanger : héhé :) I'm the time master !!! :D
azazel : many Strike ? wow !!! gosh if it was the case, people who know me would be in trouble to control all of my doubles !!! lol
Gelfing : thx !
Well, i started the body, but it's not detailed yet. Contrarly to Wynrorn, i think i'm gonna work more on modeling for this one.
And here is the change for the nose. Tell me what you think about it, and which one you prefer between this one, and the last.
02-12-2003, 03:17 PM
great characters strike.
02-12-2003, 04:54 PM
Come on !! Let's go working !! I still have alot of things to do...
(just a test of digital confusion of Lightwave)
02-12-2003, 08:26 PM
The "second nose" looks much better, master !
You should do something to his eyelids too (especially his left's). He might be blind, but his eyeballs are about to pop out ;)
Could you spare one of your clones so I can get a 3D teacher for myself ? C'mon mate !!!
02-12-2003, 09:31 PM
that texture and mode are so great dude, i just think u should play with a specular map better, it looks a bit too much uniform on that.
02-12-2003, 10:30 PM
Gom : check your mails amigo ;) So you finally deign to post here !!! ;) thanks for the advices, i'll do that, i promise ;)
InnerVortex : Yea, you're right, i have to work more on textures in general. thanks ! ;)
And if i 'd sleep for one time ?.....
02-12-2003, 10:43 PM
I can't believe how good you are :p
It makes me think how bad I am :hmm:
But it's great to see great work ;)
02-13-2003, 10:55 PM
Fantastic texturing and lighting, the Wynrorn lives:thumbsup:
Love the sculpture too. I never had much luck with the air drying modelling clay, much prefer super sculpy
02-13-2003, 11:11 PM
thanks for your words ;)
well... i'm in trouble... i changed a little bit the head mesh, and i don't know which one to choose...
Which one do you prefer :
02-13-2003, 11:16 PM
Looks really good strike!!..I like the one on the right....
02-13-2003, 11:27 PM
I also like the right one best. Looks more real.
The left one could be a "afraid" morph of the right one somehow.
Looking good already Strike!!
02-13-2003, 11:39 PM
Defintly the one on the right. Like Joril said, looks more real.
02-14-2003, 09:00 AM
The One On The Left has really nice shading on body but too much specularity on face....
The One On The Right has the correct shading on face but body looks too shiny....
.... there u go !!! :bounce:
02-14-2003, 05:43 PM
thanks for your advices all !
i think for the final images, i'll finally keep both of them for a composition with different clones ;)
here's an update with the lightening :
I need more specular again... Thanks for your image Dimitris ;)
02-14-2003, 05:54 PM
Something about him was bugging me... now I know, he reminds me Robbie Williams;) , this British popstar..... can't spot any single placa, maybe except mouth area...
02-14-2003, 06:12 PM
02-14-2003, 07:11 PM
My thoughts on all three characters: The first seems too 2D to me.I just think it's a waste to create in 3D and then make the character look 2D in those shots.Too washed out, painted looking, excellent work but just would have been better without the 2D look in my opinion.
As for the Troll type beast: I don't care for the mouth. It's open all the time.It seems like he has some device in his mouth that keeps it open all the time.It would be nice to see some versions where his mouth is closed or half opened.
This last character : Does look like the "LOVE CHILD" of Robbie Williams and Golem.
Other than that: I think the modeling is really well done. The texturing is very good. The amount of work is very impressive. This entry is one of the best in the challenge.
I just had to voice my true opinions. There are things that bother me,but they are just taste things,As for talent, you Strike have a lot of it.
In the end,it's a great overall entry.
02-14-2003, 11:54 PM
Johnlittle :
About Ar-Lum, it was my goal to make a 3D character looking 2D, it's almost thanks to particules and draw textures that this one is looking like that, but as i said : it was my goal. ;)
For Wynrorn : I modeled him like this, and it will take alot of time to make his mouth closed for me, coz i have some troubles with animation ;) ... Anyway, i know what you mean, and it would have been great to have different version ;) but after all Wynrorn is bad, and always yelling across fangorn forest, so it was for me the way for you to see what's his main expression.
About Gal-Dig : yea i agree... but like alot of humanoid of its size. Anyway, check the final images in a couple of weeks and then you'll tell me about him ;)
Thanks for your constructive critics, and nice words :buttrock:
Well this time, i worked a little more on lights and textures, and just a little bit on bones. I didn't have time to put bones on fingers, so here's just a little test.
02-15-2003, 04:54 PM
I finish with the plug of OGO_Taiki for the volumetric sky. This time is my last image. I just wanted to send a message on this last one. I will not tell anything about it, but you'll have your own opinion about it.
Anyway, in this one, imagine the fall of Isengard, and all those drillers going back home... But where are their homes ? :surprised
 tu as un grand sens de la mise en scene... :buttrock:
02-15-2003, 11:57 PM
Very nice work strike!!!...but you HAVE to put bones in those fingers.... hands can have so much expression...aside from his stiff fingers an absolute wonderful job!!! :applause:
02-18-2003, 08:06 AM
just something i wanted to share. From the last character. Just a thought....
S P L E N D I D......u got amazing rendering skills and loads of style.:buttrock:
02-18-2003, 04:18 PM
 is all I do in this thread
02-21-2003, 08:17 AM
02-21-2003, 11:06 AM
insane work :buttrock: :buttrock:
02-21-2003, 12:23 PM
it's really nice you are really fast , you made ....let me see!!! three concept in the total????? and all are nice, I would like to see the textures.
02-22-2003, 03:24 PM
Amazing strike!!...I LOVE the feeling of that last picture. :buttrock:
02-23-2003, 04:14 AM
wow! awesome work ! what modeling style do you use ? do you have background references and you model point by point or do you box model ?? thanx! good luck !!
02-24-2003, 07:40 AM
I just wanted to come in and say i think your efforts for this challenge have been excellent. It's been really fun seiing all of your creations.Three of them, and all speacial in ther own unique ways.
I look forward to a final shot,I wonder what you have in mind? either way i think it will be really well done and great to look at.Once again Bravo for some great models and very fine showcasing of your skills.
 :applause:  ..........All for your three creations...........
02-24-2003, 11:01 AM
Thanks virtuoso, it was a pleasure to be in this one. And also a pleasure to see some people appreciate it as well ;)
Anyway, i think this time will be the last for me. This thread had alot of views and answers during the last 2 months, but not the goal i hoped. ... Three different characters in so less time was for me a kinda challenge for myself, and i enjoyed alot doing that, but maybe quality is not really here... well my thought... I think modeling is a thing, but giving a soul to a model, and try to make the other people think about an image is something else... I don't think i found the good forum to talk about what represent the real way to create.
So... Bye all, and please : don't vote for me coz that's not my goal ;)
I still have a wip deep in the wip area, for those who are interested in :)
Open your mind. Don't wait the others to feed yours... ;)
Hey, Strike - I appreciate your efforts for this challenge.:applause: You've shown a lot of imagery.
02-26-2003, 12:19 PM
:wavey: .::STRIKE::. Hi...i just wanted to say that i liked all three characters but i am in favour for the first one.
Great 3d + photoshop works --- great illustrations and thoughts.
Hope to see u again in a wip or a challenge.
02-28-2003, 02:02 PM
Hey .::STRIKE::. Incredible work! You're so fast, I can't beleave it! This is one of my favorite entries.
02-28-2003, 04:06 PM

02-28-2003, 04:06 PM
