Alright, I got a week to solve this flickering shadows problem in maya, and i friggen have no idea what the problem is. I'm using depth map shadows, depthmap size 1024, dmap filter 3, I have motion blur on, and i'm gonna run a pass without it, we'll see if that solves the problem only thing is i need motion blur on for the shot. I have also been trying to help out a friend with this similar problem, She's using raytraced shadows, and is also getting flickering shadows, is this a bug in maya? whats the work around? Anyone have any suggestions?

I do not know a way to solve this, but I just wanted to add that I've got that problem too.
And it was with depth map shadows.

Turn off 'Auto Exposure' in the ShaderGlow attribute.

Hope this helps :)

try using a dephmap image...for the sahdows to read that same image intead of creating new dph images fot the sahdows... that might help...

a dephmap image is an empty image in iff format made by maya from with lights read to create a shadow..( thats what i have understood..) still lok it up on the maya help.. its there...
hope that helps....

I had this problem once with depth map shadows
I played around with the dmap bias and filter and it fixed the problem nicely

this problem can sometimes occur when you have the object casting shadows too close to the object having shadows cast onto it.. Mostly the thing to solve this would be to do what the above post says

No new method of getting rid of the shadows I agree with previous post. But wanted to mention along with this that your map size sounds large thus long render. Try a different combo of settings on the light....such as spotlight:
cone> 60-80
Pnuembra> .2-.8
falloff>2-8
Thought i'd mention this.
For more info stop in on the "free gi " thread in this forum. We have given several example setups if needed

Thanks for the tips guys, i think the auto focus would have solved the problem, i just switched the damn shadows to ray trace, cuz its a small scene anyways. Stupid bug if you ask me....Friend of mine has the same problem with raytraced though. Any thoughts on that one?

I had the same problem too, I always have flickering or sizzling problems with shadows and espacially with bump maps :annoyed: (I know this is not exactly what you guys were talking about but might as well share it with you and maybe find a another solution)
I've found a solution, but it dosen't totaly get rid of it ...

from the library:

Bump filter
Values greater than 1.0 produce more filtering making the bumps smoother. Increase the value if aliasing occurs (jagged staircase effects) in final renderings, or if the bump map appears to "pop" or "sizzle" over the course of several frames.
If anyone has a another solution, Pleeeeeeease share it with us 'cause this is really annoying :annoyed:

thanks :)

I've found that the bias can rally mess up the intensity of your shadows.

The solution I came across with experimentation and this forum is to turn off the auto focus depthmap, set your dmap focus to same as your cone angle, crank your filter to around 10 (depending on how blurry you want the edge of the shadow).

Another important thing I found out was that 1024 is really too high (currently waiting for renders using 1024 dmaps - SLOOOOW) 512 is plenty as long as you crank your filter up.

To DavidALam:
nearly everything in Maya is controlable: incl. shadow casting!
All you have to know is how the different calculations work.
Autofocus is never a good idea whenn doing animations the app calculates the whole scene dimensions and "divides" it to fit the shadow map. One changing unit can make a shadow pixel "plop" - even when blurring is set to a higher value.
Itīs allways a good idea to work with spotlights to cast shadows (soft pointlights have to be calculated in 6 directions by default!!!).
Setting the correct cone angle is important: shadow and light only those objects, that have to be lit!
Use manual clipping planes: this gives you most control over dmap resolutions and rendering overheads.
Last not least: use the online help - there is nothing you canīt find in there.

Beleave me: your shadow problem is absolutely not a bug! But you may not notice these common redering issues in most other apps, because the programmers are afraid to confuse the users.
