---------------------------------------------------
When Sauron was known as the Necromancer in his stronghold of Dol Guldur under the shadows of Mirkwood the Great, he had servants far more adapted than orcs to the life in forest; they were called the Kharaghûl.
Actually, while the Necromancer's growing power was calling through the Middle-Earth for allies of all horizons, from Far Harad in the south answered the fellest apes of the jungles. He perverted them, made them more cunning and wicked, taught them the Black Tongue, and they became his best soldiers under the boughs of Mirkwood. Of what they became after that, nothing is sure; but they were certainly destroyed during the assault against Dol Guldur urged by Gandalf.

sketching...the idea is precising...

Man, great concept. And I like the idea of putting a little light onto Dol Guldur and Mirkwood. They kind of are my favourite place in the hobbit,
"Lazy Lob and Crazy Cob
are weaving webs to wind me."
I'm looking forward to this one!
WOW! Just cool...i really love the mokey like characters! Ur art is very comunicative and dynamic! Well done.
very interesting concept ,can wait to see more:wip: :wip: :wip: :bounce:

Hi M@...............I like the storyline and the concept,l;ooking to be on a very good path. I'll be following your progress. Perverted apes of the deep jungles sound quite interesting.
You say they are more cunning and wicked, will they also be enchanced with extra size and agility? Any tools or weapons?
Sounds real good so far, looking forward to more.

Those are very cool concept sketches, m@! Very nice indeed
When you make the model, I want to see that skull hanging around it's neck still! So make sure you stick to your concept sketch!!
Thank you all! I'm glad the concept pleased... more concept sketches to come , 3d is still far ahead I think, there's 47 days left...
Jabo, -OZ-, Koma, KingMob, DivideByZero, show : thanks a lot!
Apt Pupil : Hi there ! High time I entered, sure ;) say I'm a bit shy ... and where are you ? I was really looking for your entry in this contest.. Found a job? see you!:)
Virtuoso : thanks! maybe they will bear some kind of weapon, not sure yet...but I think trained apes, armoured and cunning, are still deadly with "only" their fangs and claws, in a forest. Waiting for your entry!
Leigh : thank you...I'll try to stick to it!

I am very nervous :) ... your sketche is.. .. WOW
Fetus23 : Glad you like it
cocoknight, dark_lotus, eli-XSI-ir : thanks!
pit : thanks. The fur... we'll see how I'll do. I use max4 and I have no specific plugin for doing fur. I'll try to use scatter+flex, but that's damn slow. I will certainly experiment some hybrid thing.
----
I will start soon to model the head. Here are some guidelines for orthos I just did:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/v-h/mathias/khhead120.jpg
P.S: I will model it mouth open, because I will not do morph targets for the face.. I will do a static model, that will also help me with the fur (no bad and long calculations).
No it's time for some 3d ...
fellah
01-13-2003, 11:34 PM
hey, your drawing skills are really good m@ you already know I think that!
but I can't remember seeing a 3dmodel from you  I don't doubt your 3d skills, just looking forward to seeing them :)
work, work, work :wip:
Wait a bit fellah, I'll try to put an image of the head I just started to model, before I go to sleep ...
3d is coming! I wanted to post where I am before I go to sleep (3:11 AM :surprised  ). So It's very WIP. Low poly, of course.

You could possibly make his teeth a little bit bigger though - even the gorillas we have in this world have slightly larger fangs :)
You could also maybe make his brow slightly heavier... Just a thought :)
Otherwise, a fabulous model! :D Looking forward to seeing some ears...

Nice to see someone my age pull off drawings and 3d the way you are. Great start thus far, and a nice clean mesh. This one will be one to watch, ill keep my eye out for it, hopefully you'll finish though, Ide hate to see a good idea placed on hold.. Keep up the good work.

vertex : thanks. Sketching doesn't need to be accurate, it's meant to have a style.. I'm not fast enough to sketch in 3d though...
Leigh :  yeah I don't know why I did those teeth so small.. Even in my reference sketches I did much bigger fangs..:shame:, I'm going to correct that. Thanks for your crits :)
Koma : thanks a lot  I'll try to detail it even more... wrinkle wrinkles wrinkles
BladeFX : thank you!
TheSEL : Thanks ! I'll try to finish though it will be hard work, fur and texture will take time... And look at

Once he's in battle armour, this work will be caried onto another level.
Actually this one reminded me of planet of the apes.
Anyway, really clean modeling this far.
Will you give him some facial expressions once it's done? Real apes have alot of em.
About the ears.
They seem to fall back into the furr on gorillas.

well I think I've now finished that head. It's welded and all. (well there're not yet morph targets... don't know if I'll do that though; and no fur, I'll do it in the end) I'm quite happy with the result and to have finished it now. I 'll not have much time next 2 weeks, I'll be in exams... I'll just have time to check CGTalk and maybe do some sketches to have a better idea of what will look like the body and armor.

But...
I don't think Middle-Earth creatures have to be extravagant. That's not my interpretation of the book... in the book the creatures are very simple. Trolls are almost humans (referring to "The Hobbit"). Orcs are foul humanoïd creatures, almost humans too; nowhere is it mentionned they should have pointy ears(neither for the Elves), green skin or whatever. Shelob is a big spider, barely described. She's got a big belly, eyes and claws. Just the necessary to frighten. The Balrog is just a moving terror of Fire and Darkness.
So I think an armed ape, cunning and under the command of the Dark Lord, could fit Middle-Earth; Maybe some of you could think that if added a horn on his nose or transformed his arms into long tentacles it would be better because it 'll be a "fantasy" creature. I don't. Transformations can occur inside. The fact that he wears an armor and handles a weapons is a token of this transformation.
I hope that my 3d-interpretation will be original enough.
Don't want to justify or anything... just placing my thoughts in order.
Remi thanks..
thanks again for your crits and encouragements! it's useful!

the only thing planet of the apes to me is the armor, but I havent really seen how you plan it...so long as its not that crazy tendril/wicker look I think it fits great...
after seeing your savage look to them I think they have a ncie personality of their own...
Besides judging by your modeling you got some great stuff here and more to come man.
I do like the idea of big forearms and little legs tho, gorrilarific. maybe a compromise...either way its top notch :buttrock:

Hey m@, i've away for a while. I moved to Paris finally :)
I'm happy to see ya finally in this contest, and doing an AWESOME job!!!! :):)
I didn'read all the posts, but i agree with you interpretation, everything will be in small details, because Tolkiens is about small details. And you are good at that!!
Well i'll be lloking forward.
I'm not having too much time for this contest because i'm having a lot of work doing low polys models for a company, but i'couldn't stop myself from startink skeching some creature, we'll see.
cheers m@
bentllama : thank you very much! I'm happy not to be the only one :)

BlueCougar
01-28-2003, 04:02 PM
Are you going for the longer palm of the ape? The proportions for a human are slightly off, the fingers need to be a little longer, but for an ape I believe that's appropriate. I like the progress as well as the simplicity of the presentation.
Hey m@,
This is looking great so far. The updates seem promising
Just think you should enlarge/ thickn' those hands a bit, to give it a more beast-like look.
Overall looks great and I'm diggin' the model so far. Maybe you could make him even some more chubby.
Oh and by the way: That third concept art sketch of yours (on the second page) >.

You can really be proud of your hands, they are great...
Can you tell us more about your way of production?
Did you do some sketch for the hand? And about the modelisation, cube modelling? edge extending?
Could you show us some wireframe plz? your wire are full of knowledge you know :)

KingMob : thanks  ! if I don't post a view of the palm yet, it's because... hum... well it's not ready yet ;)
BlueCougar :thanks! I'm going for the long palm, yes
Edge : Thank you. I've now thickened a bit the fingers, but I can't do much more or I'll have to redo my mesh and I don't have time for that  ...and I'm quite bored of hand modelling now.
blackwulf360 : thank you !
Ryu : thank you very much. I didn't draw any sketches, I had my hand handy:D . But I should've, to gain time and painful tweaking. It's all box modelling :) +edge divide, edge create, cut and poly create (if you know Max)
bentllama : well I think they will stay of that kind. The long palm will do the trick I hope. But well, I'll say that they have human-ish hands to handle tools better .. . Thanks for your crit!
Kurtzar :we'll see, we'll see. Thanks !

That is superb modelling, m@! :applause: Truly wonderful polys!
The only crit I have is that, and this may sound a little strange, the helmet looks a little too finely-crafted for an ape like character.
Don't get me wrong, I really love the helmet design, but somehow I have difficulty believing that something bulky and apelike such as this fearsome creature would be able to craft such a lovely helmet, if you know what I mean. Somehow I think that a creature like this would make very bulky armour.
Look at the films. The Elves are dainty, artistic people, and their armour is intricate and beautifully crafted. The Dwarves are squat, stocky characters, and their armour and weapons are full of sharp-edges geometric designs that suit their character. The orcs and goblins are crude, vile creatures, and their armour is spikey and crude and vicious looking.
I think that it really helps if you try and imagine your character making his own armour. Although this guy has fairly human-like hands, the sheer bulky body and large size of this character would suggest that perhaps any armour he fashioned would also be large and bulky.
I know that this character is smaller than the cave troll in FOTR, but it is slightly similar in terms of character, I think. Now, try and imagine that cave troll making armour - do you think it would look anything like this? Perhaps the overall shapes would be the same, but I think the manner of manufacturing would be cruder and rougher, and the overall look of it slightly bolder.
Just some things to think about :)

Not sure if this has been said yet but maybe if you gave him a little more forehead he would look more apelike. Its a great model none the less. and wouldnt his legs be a little bigger to support all that weight? and arms as well assuming he moves as a traditional ape.
Hey, just checking out your new updates, I wont say anything negative about the body because you are going to cover it up with armor, so we all can wait to see what that turns out like. Everything magnificent thus far, the only thing I see compared to your sketches is the expression. His eyes need to be more open and he needs to look more pissed off. That is a great model. :) I also like the history behind it except for one point. If Saruman's servants made the armor, it would have the symbol of the white hand on it if you wanted to follow the books rather than the movies. In the books Saruman is feigning an alliance to Sauron and is really seaking the ring for himself. His Uruk-Hai wear the symbol of the white hand and view themselves as superior to orcs from Sauron (which they are). No doubt a skilled warrior like this would also wear the symbol of the white hand. So Im just saying that if you want to keep the eye of sauron on the helmet, you should say that skilled servants of Sauron made the armor rather than Saruman's servants.

you have made such a great creature there man, only suggestion is to rethink the shoulder armor a bit, the plate underneath. Reason being this dude should be able to wield that sword like no one's business, but as it stands right now, he won't be able to rotate his arms up to much because of the spike blocking the rotation at a certain degree ;)
Also please add more detail to the thighs, he needs it, give him a thigh master or sommin heheh

I think it looks too manufactured.Too straight, right out of the machine shop. I think with textures, age, dirt, grime, chinks in the armor, scratches, bends, missing parts, than it has the chance of being really amazing. As of now it is very good with potential.I hope you can get the texturing finished,it would be great to see.
Also I would have liked to see more size in the hands and feet, still however thewy are very detailed and well done.Overall it is a very good job none the less.

the face is looking great!
only crit that probably of little concern is the length of hair currently...
and this is a personal preference... but i wouldnt mind seeing longer hair.
either he grooms/trims himself alot, or hes a teenager hehe. none the less its a really great face, lots of emotion and intimidating in it,
cant wait to see more updates :-)
Thanks all! as I said before, I use no plug-in . Here's my technique:
I made 5 sample patterns each containing ~100 hair scattered on a plane(using the max's Scatter tool) . The specificity of each pattern is to have hairs bending a particular way (with angles from 0 to 90°). Those patterns then are placed manually over the model's surface, the trick being to rotate them in a good way; the Scatter modifier lets me then to rotate the hairs relatively,to add randomness and change the number of hair per pattern; and, very important, to choose how much hair I want to display in the viewport .

hi m@
just want to say (like so many already have) that this is a truely exceptional model.
its fantastic to see someone with such ability work through a model like this.
i reckon this my fave model in the whole comp: particuarly in terms of the modeling. hard work pays off: well done!
btw. i love the surface aesthetic of the old renders: the lowpoly ones of the head back at the start: they have a wonderful quality.
it was seeing your thread a few weeks ago that inspired me to enter this comp. so thanks:)
spose i should stop being so sycophantic and give some form of crit: the one thing i am not too keen on are the peices of metal on the front of the helmet (the two horizontal strips of the saurons eye and the arrowhead shape that comes down over his muzzle) i think these pieces look artificial: perhaps you could re model them with bevelled edges? or if they are already bevelled then make it a little more pronounced.
well done and keep going. its a beautiful peice.
oh and btw, your concept sketches are fantastic: you really have excellent style: they have great movement and your lines are very dynamic!

cakeypigdog :thanks a lot.. I'm glad I could motivate you! your entry is very stylish.. as for the helmet I quite agree. I didn't detailed it as much as it should. We'll see if I have time.
BoromirNo1 : thank you!
and to the CGTalk staff : I'm honoured you used my ape to represent the challenge on the front page. Thanks a lot.

The Magic Pen : thank you!
Equinoxx : thanks a lot man! better looking than shag? I'm glad, but I think it's because it's all placed by hand ... but that technique is not at all animation-friendly. I will consider making a tut... I'll post in the 3dsmax section.

verrrrrrrry cool! hurry up...you would be a potential winner if you finish in time! :wip:
You are insane :P very cool fur and technique. Thats a interesting technique for the fur!!! The modelling is superb, im a little put off by the armour. it looks very well made extremley clean with perfectly round bolts and extremly smooth shell like shape. of course the textues will make a diffrence but theres something about it that looks off to me. Im not sure why. Anyway this is awesome!!!!! i want more more i say!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is some really amazing stuff. It's great to see the whole process, and some of your solutions to problems such as fur are pretty inventive as well. A tutorial on something like that would that would be awesome, but then again this whole thing has been a learning experience. Thanks for putting this up. I love this forum. So many talented people showing thier work processes. Right now I'm mooching, someday I hope to contribute...
I do have a modeling question though. I looked at your wire for the head, and I was just wondering how are you getting such tight details without placing more bevels and tighter polys, especially at the edges of the eyelids and mouth. Also at all the wrinkles. Are you weighting verts in meshsmooth? Are they super high iterations? Yet, I see some really tight polys in the knuckles of the hand. Just curious. Great stuff, you know in case you needed encouragement ;)

Just wanted to drop by and give you some extra incentive to get as much more done as possible and to also say you have really given a great effort throughout this characters creation period.Reallly wonderful work from concept, modeling, and textures.
There can always be some crit or two mostly due to personal tastes etc,etc....blah,blah,blah........ but still overall this is a top notch creation, truley one of the best. You should be proud M@,excellent work.

I've got a little suggestion for you, although it's prob. too late to change.
The eyes don't totally match the open mouth scream/roar. It seems they look too relaxed for the rest of the face. They should be more "strained" or something. Does that make sense?
Just a little nit I guess.

I like where you're heading towards with the textures of the helmet but it definately needs dirt, much dirt, and maybe blood and/or scratches.
You're progressing very incredibly fast!
