View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - lildragon
lildragon 01-11-2003, 12:54 PM Due to an overwhelming response of the crew I once went head to head with a year ago to the date, I have no choice but to challenge and finish again. :argh:
Okie I'm in the middle of putting my reel together so it might be slow.
I'm also using Maya for this, time to learn it I'd say :)

Backstory of Rána
Inhabitants of the mountain of Emyn Muil, the "norna Quendendil" are creatures that tend to generally keep to themselves, as they naturally don't care to associate themselves with any other race but their own.
But is this tale true? There is one song that the Bards of the Prancing Pony never sang.
During the great battle that was fought on the Plains of Dagorlad against the mighty Saruman, these brave beast known as the norna Quendendil, fought bravely alongside the elves. It is the elves that the norna Quendendil cherished the most, the only race that were able to calm the Emyn Muil dwellers.
The elves were very silent about their ally, and the norna Quendendil appreciated this gesture.
Now that Sauron is blinded with madness and the very fate of middle earth is yet to be tested by the might of the growing power of Saruman, these brave beast are once again called to battle, to fight again alongside the Elves as they Battle for Middle Earth.
Enough backstory for ya? :D enough of that here's the pic, didn't get him *totally* finished but it's pretty good I figured. The original character concept was based on a drawing by "bizarde (http://www.visualart.ro/galleries/2d_bizarde.htm)" in my inspiration folders. back to Maya, toodles

Okie, I think it was about time I got SOMETHING done if I intend on finishing this challenge heheh
I decided not to use use simply because I won't have the time necessary to challenge and work on my reel. But I did start him out in wings tho as seen below. But right now speed is important ;)
http://www.cgchallenge.com/tmp/wings.jpg
Here's his humble beginnings, 2 hrs with wings, bobbling with the new tools and such, fun app no time right now to re-learn my methods :)

And this is officially my first model in Maya, the poly tools aren't the greatest but they get the job done! Furthermore I'm in love with the rigging tools, my word :surprised I did my first rig in like a day, eaaaaasy :D
Anyhoo comments/crits appreciated of course

I know it's a wip, but I'm gonna through in some suggestions anyways! :wip:
I think you should pull down the head a little, to give him more of a hunchback(like the one in your concept) so that the head comes almost in height with his shoulders. you'll also need to pull the head out from his body to acheive that effect.
also try making his stomach a bit shorter. I think it can be cool.
only ideas/suggestions, I know it's very early :)
take care

Hehe thx bud, and the mailing list I'm speaking of is on my kar site http://www.kar.eyecandystudios.net/
As for the tris, yes they are mixed in, I do that to get control of the forms, then I go in and clean up... thing is not to overuse them, but they can be useful in the building stage :wip:

keep it coming:)
Its funny, but ive been browsing around reading some of the general discussion stuff, checking out the gallery, and watching the challenge, and half to say. CGTALK has kept you pretty busy, along with that you still have time to model and learn another apt! FANTASTIC! btw, MAYA is in my opinion the best all around 3d software on the market right now, besides XSI, give it a couple months and youll see what I mean. The renderer is not the best though, unless you purchase mental ray. Keep up the great work in the forums and know we all got your back, your model is really coming along, I will look forward to a next armor update!

Really coming along very well Lildragon. The heavy armor leg plates look well defined, nice shape to them as well.Looks like the heavy muscle will get some good company with some detailed heavy armor.
Perhaps a armor mohawk that curves along the top portion of the head tapering down to and just below the neck could be a extra nice detailed armor plate, it might go well with the unique shape of the head and neck regions.
It's looking rather bad arse I must say.Tough,rugged,strong.Are the first thoughts that spring to mind.
As you might recall Lildragon we sprang onto the Maya train at about the same time,so we shall grow together,Max is still working alonside Maya however,I'll always have a place for it.My Brothers love is XSI with Max and Maya, greedy bastard.
;)
I am using Mental ray with Maya,I still prefer V-Ray or Brazil and Final render for Max however. In case you missed this maybe this could be another option for you,it's Gi Joe for Maya. Here is a link,I like it,it's fake GI but does the job rather well.............http://www.3dluvr.com/pixho/

The plate armour on his foot is not practical if you will be setting up a foot roll on the leg later on. You may want to segment it .

Hey lil! Looking great - only comment would be to perhaps concetrate on the joints, in particualar the shoulder (the clavical just seems to get burried and stop short) and elbow/wrist, the musculature is great - but in these areas the majority of structure comes fomr the bone.
Of course it's hard to judge joints until they're Rigged!

Wow, wow lotsa responses :D okie time for an update, I spent sometime reading up on the Maya renderer and taking it for a real run, and its not as bad as most make it out to be, I actually like it :) with some more time I'll be very contented with it...
Anyhoo here's the update I haven't added any detailing to the foot pads as of yet, and the goatie is just for placement as is the loin cloth, its stiff like that for animation reasons. The next thing for me is the arm armor plates and the remaining straps and tons of fine details! weeeeeeee almost done :)

Now for replies :)
dur23 those lil bolt thingies are part of his garment, the pad they're embedded on is going to be velvet ;)
SEL Big thx man and you forgot one thing, a fiancee that needs attention and a fulltime job :D and I still find time for 5-6hrs sleep heheh
Virtuoso thx man I was actually thinking of something on his head but decided no, just a perfect place to start showing off some detailed texturing. Gawd I hope I can figure MAya's texture editor out heheh. I haven't used max in so long now, I'm beginning to forget the hotkeys o_O. And that GI renderer is kicka$$ tho I'm not such a big fan of GI, I love to light the traditional way heheh.

Can I make just one comment on the mesh? I hope you did not textured it yet.
The arm and hand are like one. Maybe make it a bit smaller, oke it's a muscled arm, but this has no wrist.
It's just anatomy, If your model is just like this, keep it, I like it anyway:buttrock:

Never mind, I saw it too late...

Hey Lil, that is looking fantastic dude. Will you have time to texture it?
Could you elaborate some on how you got those shapes on his shoulder armour please, you could even do it in the MAX forum under theoretical sub-d or something we would all appreciate it.
Thanx and keep up the good work.

I've also updated it a bit, I'm completely finished with the armor now, so all that's left in the straps and minor details... Oh and the gums/teeth/mouth area, he has to be pretty when he snarls :)
Next update will be texture and I may just rig this bad boy!

is everything one solid mesh or is the armor separate pieces. and i know you started in wings, was everything done there or was some of it done in maya?

Hey Lildragon,
He's looking good!!
I noticed that theres a seem that runs down his face.. Is his face still in developement?
He kinda looks like a fella that would kill foxes and wear their pelts, like some old warrior. Ever thought about having him wearing some?

lildragon very cool model :) I really would like to see him in action
lildragon
02-08-2003, 11:27 PM
fig yup its all separate right now, I plan on leaving the plates separate and maybe write an expression to have them bounce against each other when he's animated! Just for that extra realism ;). I switched from wings to Maya early because I wanted to become better in Maya right off the bat, wings still holds a future with me tho :) .
Stephen VyasOh and yes his face is the last thing I'll finish, he needs gums and more definition there for sure. And he's most def an old warrior, as for the fox pelts... lol we'll see, maybe that's the padding he'll wear
DarkSun You too huh? heheh sooon

It's looking real nice at this stage.I think you are at the extra detailing and finesse stage now from what I can see at least. It should be great to see the next added touches.Very nice work there Lildragon.Very nice indeed.

I think a skin like the troll of LOTR could fit to him, but maybe a different color ? With on his back some pustuls or something... About the armor, i would do something rust like the one Leigh did for her elf, but question of taste... What do you think ?

Lildragon, great model. I like your weapon choice; a hammer is quite unique
As for comments (mandatory over here): please don't listen to the people who suggest mold/warts/pus.
Just keep him much like an elephant. Perhaps a bit of dirt, but don't over do the "uglyness" That will look better.

Well it's nice to see you have arrived at the texture stage. A very fierce creature fully armored, truely belongs to the World of LOTR.
I like the Rhino and Elephant skins DimitrisLiatsos suggested as well, they just seem to belong on your creature.Perhaps some wispy type fur to go along with it and some extra fun with Photoshop too would be nice additions.
I think a rust of almost a Black nature belongs on him. This creature looks to be very battle hardened,Not much time for polishing and care of his armor.Chips, scrapes, maybe a broken piece or two in the geometry of the armor.
Well I hope to see him in living color soon.Very nice thus far indeed.

hey lil d
i tried to post after you put the image of the bumped face up but i used so many smilies that my post got rejected and i couldnt bring myself to write it all again...
i just said that it was looking very nice: ive been watching yours from before i even entered. he has excellent presence: you have great contrast going on with the organic vs goemetric shapes. cool.
only one little crit was the lips (as king has now said)
i think you might improve it if you invert the bump map at the lips: i think the issue is that you have large concave shapes and little convex ones: it should be the other way around: so that the lips have form rather than looking so 'cut into'. shouldnt be a big fix and i think it will improve him greatly
your texture on his back is spendid. it looks very professional.
keep going mate. looking very nice!! :wip: :wip:
