Title: Matte painting: Clamps of steel
Name: Luca Bonatti
Country: Italy
Software: Photoshop
This matte was made for the Pluginz.com competition... andit won it too! ;)
It's made entirely with Photoshop CS2 and a Wacom tablet. The process consisted mainly in chosing a nice color pallette, hand-painting the ancient buildings and the other elements over the existing picture and creating a proper atmosphere for the scene through the lighting. Photo integration helped to achieve realism.

Awesome picture! Great light! The only thing that disturbs me are the highlights on the steel bars. Besides from that it rocks! :)

I like this a lot but I think the highlights in the middle of the image are a bit too strong - they grab your attention to much and compete with the rest of what is otherwise a really lovely image.

Excellent work! I saw a tutorial with this contest plate, so I went to the pluginz site to look at the images. You really deserve it! I'm a newbie but I agree with highlights comments! Congratulations

I agree with MarcGoecke, and the rails are weird, i think it could be perfect without it ^^ it's just my opinion.. the rest of the picture is awesome, i love it, very nice piece ;)

I really thank you for the comments!! I'm so pleased to read that you liked it!!!
I'm happy to read your critics too, they will be useful when I will put my hands again on this... pity that I didn't have a similar feedback before the image was completed for the contest.
You know, sometimes working hard on a piece without listening to professionists' opinions doesn't allow you to notice errors or things that don't work well.
Anyway thanks again!!! maybe i'll write a MAKING OF.... ;)

Wonderful piece of art! Matte painting has not been so greatly experienced as you had.
P.S.: si notava a chilometri che era il migliore del contest. I soliti matte son piatti per via di una non perfetta fusione delle foto. te invece ci riesci alla grande! ganzo davvero
That, my friend, looks quite believeable! So you lay down the photo they provide and then you just edit on other layers?
That's quite nice, the sepia overlay always works nicely :) Could you show us the original plates please, so we can realise the work you did?
I think the composition is a bit all over the place, with no real focal point and scattered elements. that "main element" right in the middle of the pic kills the dynamism too.
I also agree about the highlight being way too strong and distractive.
Congrats on the first place :)

The middle object does seem slightly out of place. Maybe the shape, or the colours, or even how it 'connects' to the ground. Maybe enhance the reflection of the object in the water...maybe. I dunno.

Hooray, wallpaper-sized!
The grass, lake and hills are so damned beautiful they look beyond real, like a landscape from some Irish myth or something.
Which gets your point across fantastically! I hate those metal things!
A tiny half-crit - I think the right half of the lake and shore look more painted than photographic, I like it better this way (it's beautiful and it reminds me of some classic English landscape paintings) but I don't know if it's what you intended.

This is one of the best Matte Paintings I have seen on CGTalk in a long time. Great athmosphere. The only thing that stands out to me is that the center building is centered on the lake/crater, offset would have been nice, although this is being overly critical of work that is better than my own. Keep it up!
