dark_lotus 01-11-2003, 11:38 AM The Elat-Quan
The Ocean Elves.
Ages ago, the race of Elat-Quan used to be elves. But they have grown to something far grander than any elf.
More coming Soon! (HA Leigh, I have an idea!)
The Sketch will go online as soon as I can get a scanner.

will they live in the bay of belfalas?!

lazorwolf: They live in deep oceans, I haven't done enough research yet, and due to lazyness I haven't read the books (SHOCK HORROR!)
I'm actually buying them later on today.
Oh and a WIP to get things rolling.

Well thats the last time I try and model a human head without reference, well it was meant to be alien-esque, but I think there are too many of them around.
So to make it a bit more elf-ish I decided to start again, so here's WIP 2.
Enjoy!!!

Heheheh Rob, I think that we just both realise that Elves are the coolest race in Middle Earth :D
(Except for Aragorn that is... although he isn't a race.... ooooh, imagine if he was! :D A WHOLE RACE OF ARAGORNS!!!!.... sorry, got a bit carried away there :p)
Well, your character is coming along nicely! Although you leave texturing aside for now and focus on your forms a bit :shame:
Now, what kind of features are these Elves going to have that sets them apart from regular Elves, eh? At least my Elf is dead!

<shakes head> :p Mind you I would love a race of Arwens or Galadriels, ohhhhhh. LOL!!
Although you leave texturing aside for now and focus on your forms a bit
Ah thats just to make it look purdy (its just a quick 30 second procedural jobby)
Now, what kind of features are these Elves going to have that sets them apart from regular Elves, eh? At least my Elf is dead!
Oh just wait and see, <big evil smile>

Oh i'm giddy.
If your wondering, I'm experimenting with rendering, even at this early stage. I'm aiming to get that real celestial quality.
They were elves you know.
DivideByZero: Thanks!!! Here you are!

Oh more updates.
I'm getting kinda sidetracked with this headband thing, but I'm not looking forward to the next bout of modelling.
Its going to be tough.
But here's a couple of updates for you.

Looking cool, Rob - I really like the gills! :D
The mouth and chin area bug me a bit though - they look like they could do with some tweaking here and there.
Otherwise, it's looking very nice so far!
Did you, by any chance, get the idea for the appendages on her head from the Diva in The Fifth Element? ;)

I love water creatures. I think it's going to be some cool character. It's already a nice head.
Keep up the good modelling. I like it. No crits yet.

looking good man! i like the crown thing. (reminds me of zelda). i wish i was good enough to enter this challenge because i am a huge lotr fan. perhaps i'll just enter anyways!

Leigh: Actually the head was based off the pirate that I did almost a year ago!
Faraguay: THANKS!!:D
lazorwolf: yeah I was thinking about the Zora when making this, fortunately most of the body will be non-human.
CgFreak: Yeah I thought the first one was a bit pooey, I think starting again was a step in the right directions.
Did I mention I LOVE feedback ?
I've remodelled the crown, which has some details that have been missed in this render,
Hopefully tommorow I'll get the body started.

Looks good so far. There is a little bit of weirdness at the end of the tail thing on the back of his head, not sure if its meant to be there or not. Anyways, great work, can't wait to see the rest of him! :applause:

Actually Aragorn is a direct descendant of an Elf and a Maiar. (Elwe and Melian). Sorry I am a stickler for Elven history.
He is related to Elrond and Arwen. But we are talking generations of Numenor kings later. Arwen is actually only 3 generations removed from their common ancestor. Makes for some interesting inbreeding discussion.
By the by, I thought Elves were on the don't do list?
Either way, great work so far.

Hey thanks everyone for your feedback - it keeps me goin!!
amorano: Thanks! :D
Elves are on the don't do list, but what Leigh and I are doing is saying that these races are decendant of the elves.
So they're technically not elves. Not in the book sense.
Sheep Factory: Hey Thanks Bud, now only if I was looking forward to modelling it. (Alot of complex armour)
coCoKNIght: Hey thanks! I've been working on this for ~10 hours now so yeah!
Chad-D: Its meant to be female, but the Jaw needs some major tweaking. As for the tail, I hope the latest Wip clears things up a bit.
The face was actually based of Milla Jovovich, however I'm pleased that it doesn't actually look like her.

those are really nice renders, good skin material and feel. and quick getting so much done already, gives you lots of time for fine tuning. good stuff

Looking cool, Rob :)
Something that you should look at though are the facial features - they look rather masculine, in my opinion. It's supposed to be female, hey? It's an odd, but common, phenomena that peoples models/drawings tend to look vaguely like themselves, and I that is why there seems to be a masculine look here
Oh and as for the whole race of Elves, I'm ignoring the rules :p

Make her look like Milla again.:p
Looks good, just smooth out a couple spots here and there, but it is a WIP.;) I like the concept.:)

GULP,
I am completely ashamed of the following, I'm going to have to remodel the body, it LOOKS TERRIBLE!!!
(especially after just coming from leighs thread.)
Ah well this is a WIP competition.

You could also put gill slits on the neck or side of the ribcage as well...just an idea. I like the look so far!

mdme_sadie: Yeah I want to get this over and done with asap, i'm actually moving to the US in February so I will loose alot of time there. Thanks!!
Leigh: Yeah hmm, maybe remodelling a bit.
Magnusv: Thanks.
BlueCougar: I could, but it will be covered with armour, so i guess theres no point, but cool idea. It was actually someone else who suggested the gills in the first place.
Well i've done some more work on the head, I've also modelled the body,
enjoy!

To celebrate, an update.
The wings are inspired from Lion Fish.
Great job Dark_lotus....it's coming out beautifully...keep up the great work...like that last update alot:thumbsup:
That is way cool! Very original and stylish. I imagine that really dark eyes - almost black - would be nice as a contrast to the pale skin. Keep it up!

Remi: Thanks man. I'm liking the process aswell, although I need more patience to model the areas that have more detail. At the moment, its just see what works and add detail later.
pit: Excellent Idea!! Her eyes are black.
CgFreak: Actually this is a female warlord, her armour is going to be built soon.
eli-XSI-ir: thanks!
Gandalf: Well Edea from FF8 has been a huge inspiration for alot of my work. Its just something about hot chicks with power. Thanks!
Oh and is this an update attached? I think so.

Hey Robert,
I love the feel of this, mix of Zora's, ff10 sea creatures, and catfish all come to mind and then are placed in a blender.
I especially like the face, think it's great how you have progressed from your original face model. Love the Edea inspiration, keep it up.

Mangled Poly:Indeed.
Shadowed_link: Hey thanks man!!
Update Time: Her arms have been revisited, and her head has had some tweaking to open her eyes.
The staff you see is the Rod of Isenguard. ( It got swept up and drifted down the river and into the ocean.

It's a great concept, and the implimentation is coming along. The face looks more like a female now, just needs a "little" bit of tweaking. Still, it's much better than I'd be capable of so...

Are you sure you can't gain access to another machine in the meantime?
Nope, the only other computer that I have access to (the one i'm using to check my mail and read cgtalk) is not mine, and is about 5 years old.
ATM i'm pricing out a new Apple Powerbook to replace my Dell. As for the laptop, I'm giving it to a friend of mine to try and fix, since Dell screwed me out of a warranty.
But thanks again everyone for your support. I wish you guys all the best in your threads, be sure to look forward to my new series of artworks.
Enjoy:
