I've looked in the manual, even found out about paint select (very cool), but I can't seem to find anything allowing me to select "front" faces/vertives/edges, etc. Any info?
thanks.

Go to Display menu -> Custom Polygon Display Option Box.

At the bottom of the display options window, turn Backface Culling to on. I think that's what you're asking about.

Turn on Backface Culling.

hmmm, it doesn't really seem to be predictabe. sometimes it works, other times it merely reduces the amount of components selected. I've tried selecting in sides views with backculling on, and sometimes it will work, while others it wont.

The Paint Selection tool starts selection only on visible faces but can continue on parts of the surface hidden behind itself or other surfaces if you continue paining without interrupting the stroke
Back Culling selects faces facing the camera regardless if they are visible (behind something) or not.
