View Full Version : God/Demon - Character - Lowdown

This is Regi. He's in the unfortunate circumstance of being possessed by a demon of the lowest order. Slowly but surely the demon has assembled itself onto Regi's body and mutated it into a grotesque tribute to the Lords of Hell.

Concept...but what is it going to be? 2D or 3D...

Joel Hooks
03-11-2002, 10:58 PM
He will be a 3d model. At least I hope so. :(

Joel Hooks
03-12-2002, 05:05 AM
a better sketch:
http://www.lowdowndigital.com/march_chal/concept.paint.2.jpg

Hopefully i am up for it technically. i could see where the model would get tricky... So.. any opinions before i spend a month trying to realize this in the third dimension?

The bottom will be a tricky animation, but the long neck demon section has some potential in that regard. Hopefully i can get through this blocking quickly, because I know the pixel pushing will go on for a loooong time.. :)

That's the fun part though.

Dont usually see different direction of 3d humanoid so I gotta comment. Bravo very interesting direction. Tough, but could be very unique.
How does the skin change between them since the monster is sewn on? Possibly the area inbetween in growin together ....ooooh chills.
Cool idea there.

Joel Hooks
03-12-2002, 11:18 PM
Thanks!

The "stiches" will be healing I am sure. With the two skins merging, and red infection type markings. Not a clean job I am afraid :/

heh... It's a shame that I have to work tomorrow. i'd like to dink with this for another 8 hours and pass out. :wip:

http://www.lowdowndigital.com/march_chal/daryl_2.jpg

He needs to be fattened and such. I want to knock out the body so I can work on the heads. I am hoping to have the body done by the end of the week.

Gosh man, i like your concept sketch, i donīt know why it makes me think on some The Boschīs paintings (the monsters of The Garden of Delights) And your avatar too. I like the style very much.

Joel Hooks
03-13-2002, 03:15 AM
I had forgotten about that painting. Have you seen it up close? I notice it hangs in a museum in Madrid.

i bet it is simply fantastic in person.

Thanks for the compliments.

Joel Hooks
03-13-2002, 09:44 AM
Just some vert pushing really. He was no way near fat enough. Now he is about right. i decided to do the tentacles elongated and pose them later. Easier to handle that way. I have the claw sketched out, so this weekend will be head modeling for sure. :wip:

It matches my sketch pretty well I think, but it doesn't look mean to me. Is it the overbite? Something with the eyes?

Looks like a lost puppy more than a minion of hell.... :/

Any ideas?

Fetus23
03-14-2002, 10:46 AM
like the concept here....as for his puppyish looks it might be his brow....if you make it slightly v'd it might give him a more evil look.
I think you should keep the overbite (long live the simpsons!!)

Coming along well man. You managed to add some pounds to him, good job.

That's a little better. Made him frown, tweaked the nose, and furrowed the brow. He doesn't look like he is strung out on goofballs anymore.

I threw the neck of the demon head backwards because it was in the way. It makes it easier to work with and I will just use bones to place it later.

Any suggestions on making this guy fatter? I refuse to type in Fat Naked Men into google..

Wancieho
03-14-2002, 12:32 PM
Lol, liked the comment. As for fat, maybe add some rolls on his sides. I think it will also come to texturing to make his skin look like it really stretched from the fat unless you gonna model stretch marks?

Joel Hooks
03-14-2002, 06:53 PM
Ya, i guess like the original sketch with the three folds. I wish i had reference.

leigh
03-14-2002, 07:07 PM
Heheheheeheh is that a 3rd leg or is this guy's wife a REALLY satifsfied woman?? http://216.40.201.240/s/contrib/xerx/smileydavid.gif
Hey, Lowdown, I really like your concept - very 80's horror film style!! Keep it coming!!

Joel Hooks
03-14-2002, 09:38 PM
It's funny you say that because when i first stretched the demon head towards the back it appeared as if he had a giant peen growing off his shoulder

I will leave the modeling of those features to Fetus and FacialDeluxe :p

Robert_H
03-14-2002, 10:25 PM
For ideas on making him fatter, check the Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist (pg 203 in the paperback version). Theres several plates in there showing a rather obese fellow. Should give you some ideas where to add the folds and such.

Found some reference.

http://www.lowdowndigital.com/march_chal/daryl_6_fingers.jpg

I was thinking that fingers might make interesting for the 'legs' - it would certainly animate more cohesively. I d on't know. I will save them for last, see what I think.

Headed out of town this weekend, so no modeling :/

It's the first weekend I was gonna be able to work on this too! Oh well, i guess it's good to go outside once in awhile. heh. I am wanting to model the human head, hat, and the demon claw. Then I will be at the tweaking detail stage (my favorite). The mapping should be pretty fun to paint too. The grossly obese have interesting skin covered with stretching and sores. The intersections of alien flesh and flab should prove to be a good challenge also. I know it's a modeling challenge, but I wanna give the rest a go too for my own personal satisfaction. I think the likes of Hiko are destined to win the contest anyway and I am in it for the challenge not prizes :)

so much blaH blah blah.

The hand is uninspired at best. Hopefully I can quit dragging my feet and get the human head done. :hmm:

Joel Hooks
03-19-2002, 10:40 AM
I dunno, maybe the hand has hope. The middle claw definitely needs some more length.

http://www.lowdowndigital.com/march_chal/daryl_8.jpg

The head is blocked in. Should be able to make some decent progress this week I think.

Fetus23

maybe add another long horn on the wrist?

looking good. it must be fun to model something so obese!
i'm wondering about that demon head's over-bite. looks like he spends most of his time nawing on the guy's shoulder.

Joel Hooks
03-19-2002, 07:52 PM
I agree about the overbite. I will either bring the lower jaw out, which would probably work well and give him a bulldog look, or I will put gnaw marks on the shoulder like he is indeed spending his time chewing on Mr Fat. :wip:

Joel Hooks
03-20-2002, 11:30 AM
http://www.lowdowndigital.com/march_chal/daryl_9.jpg

Or maybe I will chop it out altogether... It might go on a leash. :)

I can reattach if I want, but it was in the way of doing the head modeling. hrm.

Robert_H
03-20-2002, 11:45 AM
The stitches on the lips look good. Maybe extend them over the top and bottom of the lip a little so that they are more pronounced. Just a thought. Also maybe take a bite out of Regi's shoulder with the overbite. Cant wait to see him finished.

Joel Hooks
03-21-2002, 01:15 AM
doh, the stitch stuff wasn't even supposed to be in the render

The shoulder extension might be gone for good. it's at least gone for the next week or so. Damn thing was constantly in the way :/

Fetus23
03-21-2002, 07:13 AM
nice start on the human face...hehe I like the ball cap :)
put that demon back on!!

I like the cap too, but it's a bit out of place I think. His demon buddy is back in the show now that I got my pieces managed a bit better. I am trying to think of accessories. I am using stitching elsewhere, so I shut his mouth with another method.

Really cool model.. :)
The legs looks kinda like a octupus..

Joel Hooks
03-21-2002, 08:33 PM
Thanks for the compliment. I was actually planning on using that octo fatty lady from Little Mermaid for animation reference, though she is swimming a lot so it doesn't have the weight I'd want to achieve. Somebody told me sponge bob square pants (wtf?) had a similar character too, though I've never seen the program.

I had to deal with the whole stitches in 3d concept, and it wasn't too hard.

it's coming along nicely

Joel Hooks
03-23-2002, 11:15 PM
Ya, check out the close-up. He looks like he's had about 20mg of Valiums. heh

The overbite makes him look dopey, but I like it. I think it's the brow that gives him that relaxed spacey look. Need to add some tension in that area.

My rigging is very very weak. I've never really done it before. In fact, this is my first full character period. I haven't got a handle on joint deformation and bulges yet. :(

A few more small things to fix, and I am ready to map him (next month)

Threedeemer
03-25-2002, 10:19 PM
Brilliant! lowdown. You have made alot of progress from the last time I saw your character. I like the eye area on the secondary skull-like face, also that strap on the chubby one is very funny. :D

Joel Hooks
03-25-2002, 11:50 PM
Thanks man!

I still have to:

Add horns to demonhead
work the left arm into fatty arm w/nub
reshape belly
work on ass/back area
work the demons brow a bit
fatties brow too
add wristcuff w/ spikes
rig/skin properly

not too much. Then I am done until texturing.

ROPA
03-25-2002, 11:59 PM
I think when i was playn in Zew Chtulhu I imagine the demons close to your work ..
I think all U need is more detail like vains old skin and other ugly stuff . This what U made it's very good idea to do .. I think the hardest is to make this kind of idea looking good and U will be greatest when U finish this going this way ..
Remmember the monster from LOTR (this one from water)... !!!

Good luck :)

Joel Hooks
03-26-2002, 12:25 AM
I agree on the veins and nasty skin. I have been collecting reference for skin diseases for a month now. It should be rather disgusting after I texture map him :)

thanks so_hi!

Still a ways to go, and I added so much work for myself with the strapping. I am thinking i will strap his upper arms, and then I am going to add metalwork to the straps. Clasps, studs, buckles, spikes, and rivots

it's fun though.

There is a couple issues, but this is almost done. I don't think The tearing is going to get fixed. The verts just won't stay stuck, and I don't have time to keep messing with it!

So, I am going to put an inner layer and do the stiches, so the unintentional tearing will turn into real tears. :)

Gonna throw a couple buckles on the tummy straps, and fatty needs a septum piercing. I might bring back angry eyes for one last test too.
