i am producing my new animation using Maya and i plan to render out everything using mental ray, everything looks good, great in fact, problem is hair paint effects dont render out in mental ray. this is a large problem, as i cannot have everyone look really good yet bald.

this is what i have tried thus far:

convert >paint effects to polygons
this is supposdly the best way to do it, however i always get an error saying that i have exceeded my poly limit, and to check the docs for reduction hints. if i reduce the amount of hair to the point where i dont throw an error message my character is left with just wisps of hair. any thoughts???

the second thing i tried it to render everythign with z-depth channels hoping i could composit the hair in on top of my character, i dont have shake, only AFX so my compositing abilities are limited. in any event it dosnt work in AFX, it either puts the hair right in front or behind the model, so there is no real depth, but i cant even tell if paint fx hair can be rendered with z-depth at all since i dont have a decent compositing program.

if i use shake, it will recognize the z-channel information of a frame and allow me to correctly composite the hair and body together? what are other compositing program options? can you even get z-depth information on hair paint fx?

please some one help, i dont want to have to use maya's crummy native rendering engine just to have hair.

Give it a limit of large amount of polys for PFX conversion, so they'll be created properly. Then play a bit with poly reduce, You can get rid of lots of them. Best is to start in 50% increments, sometimes You'll need to do some non-manifold polygon cleanup before You try to reduce some more.
As far as depth concern, try 'luminance depth' render layer preset, it's far more accurate than Z-depth.
