I'm going to try something evil for once.:D
My first concept will be based around the idea that Ungoliant, mother of Shelob, laid her eggs in the hulk of an ancient dragon, spawning a reptilian creature unlike spider or dragon in form, but akin to both.
Pictures to arrive within 24 hours!:D

I know what you mean, it's an aWeSoMe ChaLleNge!!
It's nice to see you back erilaz. It sure was a long brake between challenges.

It's a Nice start!! :]
Nothing to say really, you don't show much ;)

speaking of shelob...everyone was talking about how they were mad that she wasn't in TTT, but i like how they allude to her by gollum saying "i'll let her do it" and then panning to a spider web. off topic i know.
erilaz
01-11-2003, 03:45 PM
There's no way they could have fitted shelob in. TTT is the longest book of the trilogy, whereas ROTK is really quite short (minus the appendices!).
I agree with you. Gollum's speaking of shelob worked well. It will entice the people who haven't read it!:)

Happy to see you again Erilaz. It will be great to see your continued advances in 3D. I love your attitude. Now get some tea and get to tweaking those verts.................

LOL that's an awesome concept, Erilaz!
Looking forward to seeing how it comes out :)
erilaz
01-12-2003, 04:57 AM
Thanks Leigh! It's good to get some motivation from such a brilliant LOTR modeller as yourself!:D
I had to put this up! Marvel as I make an evil gloomspawned demon from this common everyday sock puppet!!
erilaz
01-12-2003, 05:30 AM
See the magic! From sock puppet to a brontosaurus with a hernia!:hmm: Lots of work to do yet!!
erilaz
01-12-2003, 05:50 AM
Now we're starting to get the evil.:D
erilaz
01-12-2003, 06:53 AM
Evil toes...:D Still looks too pudgy. I need some edges to this guy!:wip:

01-12-2003, 07:01 AM
Hey it suddenly sprouted a body!!! :D
This certainly looks like it's off to a good start, and going in the right direction now :)
Just need to elimate that sock puppet look on the head! :p
erilaz
01-12-2003, 07:25 AM
Yes, the sock-puppetness of the head will disappear in due time. Thanks Leigh!:D
Me needs some modelling braces.

I like the big teeth in the cocept over the needly teeth that are in the model. The skinny teeth look so fragile....
UAaaah! Time for some scary stuff from you! Good start and great improvements in modeling skills !!
Ps: I agree with the others on the teeth - need more volume.
Gandalf
01-12-2003, 10:49 PM
Good work!
I agree with Lowdown about the teeth.
erilaz
01-13-2003, 02:42 AM
Hey guys, thanks for the crits. I think I agree about the teeth. They need a bit of crunchy quality to them.:D
Since I don't have my model at work, here's some texture work I'm doing for the Gloomspawn's skin.

absolutely cool concept...always enjoy watchin your tea soaked cerebellum at work..
lookin good, i will positively be following with interest

01-13-2003, 05:52 PM
hey erilaz, you know I think using pauline hanson as reference may have its merits :p (they used kim beasley as reference for Jabba the Hutt and Johnny for Mr Sheen)
Keep up the cool work!, Can't wait to see more of it!!
Clanger
01-13-2003, 06:00 PM
Love the needle like teeth (could do with making more irregular though) Reminds me of Whales teeth, could be used to filter out flys instead of crill.
erilaz
01-13-2003, 09:07 PM
pigwater: Tea-soaked! I like that. :D
dark_lotus: Nah, Pauline isn't cool enough to be this guy. Thanks!
Clanger: I'll probably end up doing a whole bunch of mismatched teeth, to go with the needle-like fangs of the spider, but the chunky look of a dragon.
Bit more scuplting!:wip:
erilaz
01-14-2003, 02:48 AM
Talon work! Not much to see here, I just want to show you progression!

01-14-2003, 02:52 AM
That little guy sure is starting to look like a mean tempered little bastard, eh? :D
erilaz
01-14-2003, 02:56 AM
Thanks Leigh! I was hoping he was starting to looking grouchy!
Hey, being the ultimate texture goddess that you are, can you guess what I used for his skin texture?:D
erilaz
01-14-2003, 08:06 AM
This is just to give you an idea of where those spider-talons are going.:D

Teethy. I prefer these teeth, but I'm going to mix 'em up on the top and bottom with some smaller needley ones as well.

I reckon he needs some spikes coming off his head..that run across his head and upper neck...and different hands...less human like...anyway
just my 2c

01-14-2003, 07:45 PM
Thanks Isometrix. Those hands have a long way to go yet, never fear!:D

future14: Why not join? Too busy? There's ALWAYS time for the challenges! (Regardless of whether you finish them or not!).
I've done some updates, but they're too minor to post (Added top row of teeth and fixed the legs up a bit). I'll try and post additional work tonight!:wip:

Sorry guys, I Completely missed your posts!
Virtuoso: I've got a few things in store for this guy, but the remnants of a web-spinner thing is on his rear end currently. Poisonous barbs will come in later!:D Thanks bud.
future14: Aww.. c'mon! Just squeeze in a little 3d!:)
Some work on the feet this afternoon. More intense work tonight!
That's a unique looking creature Erilaz, I'm intrigued to see how this turns out:)

The second set of spider-talons.
Check out those legs, they're no longer so rubbery and weird. Start the Dance! (Or the critiques, as it is more commonly known).:D

As productive as ever I see, you put me to shame.
Crits as I see it.
Might be nice if the Talons had a sword edge on them, just that bit nastier.
I wonder how he keeps his head up, it looks like there's a lot of weight there so some serious muscle is in order.
The hind legs could do with being different to the front ones some how.
It's coming on well keep it up.

I have to admit, I was unsure about how this would turn out in the beginning, but as time goes on, it just keeps getting better and better. This one will be great once it's complete!

Hi Erilaz
Its looking really good, there's a crease running under the eye and then behind the jaw down the neck, you could split the run of polys along the top of the mouth and round the corner so that the mesh doesn't pinch so hard.

Wow! A plethora of responses! Thanks guys!:D
Clanger: I'm trying to do well on this one, so I guess I'm a bit eager to get it all going. All of your suggestions are great! I'm actually working on the neck muscles right now!
fleedawg: I have to agree with you there. I myself didn't know if it was going to start turning out all right, but it seems to be getting somewhere!
3D Freak: Thanks! I'll try!
Vertex: I quite like that crease, to be honest. I put it there intentionally! I'm trying to stretch his face in a whole bunch of tendoney goodness. However, if you think it's pinching too much, i'll try doing what you said. Thanks!
somlor: Badass aye? Why thankyou! I'm hoping he'll turn out badass AND disturbing by the end of this!:D
Thanks for the comments and tips guys. I'll get onto those.
If anyone else has some suggestions, critiques, etc. please let me know!:wip:
Give em another set of legs....just an idea...looks good so far......keep adding those details...great model:thumbsup:

Hi Erilaz.........Well as you move right along let me give a thought or two. I think that the teeth should get a overhaul. I think they need more depth, thickness. A slight curve or bend to them.
It's just a taste thing..............But perhaps a more uniformed structure to them as well. Think the Alien in the Alien movies. Flat types in front, incisors to the sides, you get where I am coming from ...............
Also the bottom of the mouth area should get some extra depth or girth, just a bit at least.
And the toes should get more meaty.....More thickness in the X scale.
It's a WIP I understand, but just wanted to give my 2 cents.I think the overall idea is a good one.But from where you are now that's what I think needs some added depth or girth. As I said my 2 cents,it's just a preference thing.
Keep pulling and tweaking those verts.......

Back at it!
I've elongated the torso more, to adjust to the balance of the body, plus I've added some neck tendons and the general area of the wings (That's what those bumps are!)

Are U sure U don't want to give him long tail? It would fit his long neck, wings and this strange four things around his head;)

keep going Erilaz, you always come through in the end.I think the foundation is there, just keep detailing it out and you will have what you invisioned in no time at all. Hey what happened to your wings idea? Did you get another idea for this beast?
See you after another update......Keep :wip: :wip:

02-01-2003, 08:35 AM
Thanks for the mental boosters guys. I'm a little tired right now.
Virtuoso: The wings were initially planned, but I'm working out another idea. It will be funky, I hope.
Well, It's been a long time, and here's a little update. Still shaping the head and eye area (I'm working right now on making the lips look good). You can see at the back there some fleshy-spikey things on his back. More on those later.

Wheee! I'm motivated!!! (Even when I've got Icewind Dale 2 sitting here staring at me).
Here's some detail on the head. You can see there's some ickiness I've got to clean up around the mouth.
http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~erilaz/cgchallenge/2002JAN/gloom023.jpg
I'll be trying to get modelling out of the way this week so I can get down to texturing.
On I go...:wip:

ErilazaaaAAARRRRRRR!
Its looking rather tasty.
Suggestion for the wrinkles.... make the gaps between them tighter... i.e squish the wrinkles together... make them more rolly too so it gives them some more form. And make them slowly taper off into non-wrinkles. They seem to end rather suddenly atm
keep the shiznit up bastich:beer:
They need a tea icon for erilaz

hope you find time to finish this inbetween work, and tea.
erilaz
02-11-2003, 12:18 PM
Thanks very much Krugar and King_Mob. You guys are brilliant.:D
Got some good and bad news. :hmm:
The good news is, we've just got a heavily experienced modeller in at work to teach me a few tricks. Yay!
The bad news is, he works earlier and leaves a lot later than me, so I can't transfer my license to home at nights to work on my model.
Booh...
Ah well, I'll still try and squeeze the challenge in as much as possible, but I don't think it will now get as far as I wanted.
The upside is I'm picking up some good training!:D

Hey Erilaz!
That's a very angry beast you've got there, I suppose that's because you don't take enough time for it :D
C'mon, we wanna see some textures! :wip:

02-23-2003, 08:10 PM
You're absolutely right coCoKNIght! But there just isn't time, unfortunately.:hmm:
I may have to write this one off as another unfinished work at this rate. Sigh...
