View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - Grub
Here is my idea for this challenge:
'Many were the foes that rallied to the war-banner of Sauron in the dark days of Middle-Earth. From the east came the berserker Rhunengrim, fierce beast-men that lusted for blood and battle.'
Now I'm off to come up with some developments...:bounce:
Cheers,
Grub.

Good to see you joining in, Grub! :D
You going to be making something cool in ZBrush for us to see? :bounce:
Good luck for the challenge
Hey, thanks Koma.:)
Cheers Leigh:) - yeah I'm going to be using a ZBrush/Max combo.
This should be a fun project:thumbsup:
Here's the initial concept sketch of a Rhunengrim beast-man, a berserker. More to follow...:)

And that is one mighty vicious looking weapon :surprised
Awesome stuff, looking forward to seeing this in 3D :bounce:

The beginning of the beastie - starting with it's head.
For you modellers who are unfamiliar with the zany workflow I'm using, here's some progress shots:
I created this ZSphere set up on the left to generate a basic mesh to work from, shown on the right:
After some manual vertex manipulation in ZBrush I got it to look like the image below, the template that I'll use in Max (I find this method to be pretty quick for fleshing out a model's form, compared to say, box modelling) :
After exporting to Max and modelling some more, here's how it looks so far:

Heya Grubster!!! I will be watching your progress with great interest. I must say I love the concept sketch. BUT....it does look strikingly like a D&D Bugbear. :buttrock: Perhaps once I have enough materials completed I will join the challenge.
Heya Mentat, mate - pleased to see you on my thread!
Don't let the bugbear bug you - my model's more of a Big Cat than a bear - the Rhunengrim are a feline race. ;)
Lol, damn your D&D knowledge:p - I'm not surprised you've found something to compare it to - those RPG guys have come up with just about every creature combo imaginable.
That said, Grub's Rhunengrim concept was made up for the purpose of this challenge and I'll sue 'em if they pinch the idea!
Glad you'll be following my development - and hey, drop me line bud, it's been a while... :)
nice start!
That ZSphere system looks awesomely quick.
Cheers for the comments
Beastie boy's body update:)
Here's the ZBrush steps:
From left to right - the ZSphere model, the generated mesh and the hand edited model (ready for export)...
This is where I'm currently at, after working on it in Max. He's shaping up well, and there's still lots to do, especially on the limbs.
Onward, onward...:bounce:

Thanks, Betooo. Looking forward to that, myself.:)
I'm still getting on with modelling bits and pieces for this and will be updating soon:thumbsup:. However, do any of you challenge enthusiasts have any suggestions for extra equipment I can give my creature?

Okay, here are some:
-Throwing axes
-Short sword
-Smaller axe
-Thropys
-Club/Mace
Enough?
Yeah, trophies... That's a good 'un.
Ta for that list, 'Wolve - you got any further ideas, man? :)

Because you ask so kindly, I'll pain my mind some more:
-Amulets/Wards
-Another big weapon. Two big weapons, hung crossed on his back should look  IMHO
-Ranged weapon: cross bow, bow (think Lurz!), etc.
-A buckler
Well, that's it for now, but if you still need more, just ask ;)
Amulets, hmm... Excellent.:)
Crossed weapons on his back? Well, he's got cross-belts on his chest - it's still a possibility though. It would look:thumbsup:. I'll see about that...
Wolvy, where would I be without ya?
You think of anything else, let me know.;)
Not sure how many extra things I will be able to handle now (since the challenge will be over in a few days), but ya never know!

hey grub your model is really comin along man, great work
small crit from me personally though it may have been intentional, the large toe seems a little flat and but big vertically, you know?
maybe someone can explain it better then me if im not the onyl one seeing it
otherwise im really diggin this map man, keep up the good work!
Mage, thanks for the comments.
I have to work on those toes, yeah. I'll shape them and add some claws too.;) Tell me if your beady eye spots anything else that needs attending to. (Even though the challenge is coming to an end, it's still worthwhile taking feedback into account, since I'll continue modelling on it afterwards.)
New update...

Patience is a vitue, like knowledge is power, and yet ignorance is bliss.
In other words, I want it know: first come first get, the fast and the furious, the faster the better.
