"A few meters before their destination, a soldier was stumbling towards them, screaming in rage and dread. His left arm was cut off. Just seconds after, a gigantic beetle came stomping across the field, black, a little more than 15 feet high and a burning gemstone on it's forehead..."

Well, this is my concept for the Dúcarch (Dúcarch = elvish = Mighty Fang :surprised). Unfortunately, I'm a n00b when it comes to modeling, so don't except anything good!

 Wow, thank you mates, I didn't expect anyone replying :)

Well, here's my first try to model this guy:

It came out quite good IMO, but I don't know how to go on, all those legs and the head, uargs... I've been searching the web for reference on beetles, trust me, my whole body's tickling and itching from those pictures, awful stuff. But fascinating too :D

That's a cool idea - insects are a nice unusual type of creature...
The model looks interesting so far too - keep it up! And best of luck to you for the rest of the challenge!
If you are worried about your modelling skills let me assure you that by the end of the challenge, your skills will probably be even better! :D There's nothing like a good challenge to help you to learn to improve ;)

Great sketch (painting).

I see most people have started their model and even you have almost finished it... I haven't started yet... and I'm not the fastest modeller in the world.

Great work so far. I like the idea of the insect too.

Yeah, it's progressing quite fast, but the quality is lacking. That's why I haven't posted the tesselated model yet, it's vertex-chaos all over the mesh :(

Perhaps just let us take this one as a test-model, 7 weeks is quite alot of time, maybe I'll start from scratch and rig it out, that's what I miss in my model, I can't move the legs, so no posing is possible :( And there are wings missing, probably I'll add some to a new model.

Thank you Faraguay...

[EDIT] Ooops, almost forgot to add that I admire your sketch for the leb creature, great work!

Thanks Koma.

I've been busy with other stuff lately and was not able to work on the contest entry. Now here is what I did out of it. I will probably not texture it because I don't have too much clue of UVs yet.

Many changes. Almost the whole concept was altered. I don't like it, well, nevermind:
