i know there are a lot better character models out there. but i need to know from the more experienced 3d artists out there what this character is lacking to make it look more realistic.
Please tear it apart..

right off his thumbs need to be pointing down at an angle more look at your thumbs in a relaxed position as reference. small adjustments in the arm maybe. nice model love the leg hair.

Woah. For your first character model, that's pretty damn good. Nemo made a good point about 'relaxing' your model a bit.. not only will the pose look more natural, but it also helps later on when skinning and deformations come in (if you plan on animating/rigging it, that is). Perhaps you could lower the arms a bit 30-40 degrees, bend the elbows, lower the thumb and curve the fingers a bit. But like I said earlier, it's a great first model.
