Lupin500 06-05-2006, 01:57 AM Hi guys,
I'm a recent graduate from VFS and this is my rigging reel.
I will really appreciate your critique and advises!

UPDATE (Oct 18 -2006):
Hey guys, a lot of you asked me by email about the skin deformations that I used in my short film where the ferret is falling so I thought to explain it and release a little demo. To achieve it I developed in XSI an air simulation with two animatable parameters that control the Amplitude and Spread attributes. They are linked by expressions to an envelope deformer in the ferret hierarchy. The parts detached from the main body (eyes, mouth, lids, etc) are deformed with the same method but because are smaller the expression works with another scale.

You can download the demo HERE (http://www.giorgiobertolone.com/gallery/GiorgioBertolone_AirSim.mov)

I hope it's clear and i hope it helps!:)

Amazing rig man!!! :buttrock:
I'd LOVE to animate your character!
Guess there's a lot of expressions/script involved right?
You should really send it to get a job!:deal:
Hasta!

amazing work! looks really good.
Just one question, when you stretch the highest part of the body, It seems that there is some hands controlers that are not following. Does that not create a prob?
but really nice work! I'm really far from this level!

Thank you Saitham! The arm controls controls don't follow because they are IK. When I captured the movie the arms were in FK mode, so the IK controls were disabled.

Very impressive rig/setup Giorgio. I can tell you it's absolutely a production-quality work. There are some things (sim controls) I never saw in a TD Reel before and I'd like to ask you how they work. Did you also model the cartoon-character? Cause I love it!
Don't accept the first offer! Good luck!

Wow, sweet rig. :D That automatic overlapping action happening in the upper body is an awesome option. :D I can so see this being used to get that overlapping action during a walk in the spine and head or if a character is riding a horse or something. Very sweet.

Yes I modeled also the character, it's a cartoon-ferret hehe! I'm actually using it in my animation reel. I had the rig idea while watching a real ferret.
http://www.giorgiobertolone.com/Reel/ferret.jpg
His way of moving was so funny and cartoony (like an invertebrate) that I wanted to automatize it. The sim sliders control the expressions I made for every chain bone. But at the same time I wanted to have the possibility to customize the whole simulation to decide how much automatic animation I need for every different shot. That's why I have parameters to control intensity, delay and obviously the option to blend with my manual animation.

The rig looks fantastic!
Something I'd love to animate and work with, great job.
Only thing I think could be improved is- it seems like when the head is beeing squashed it's losing volume.
Anyway, Awesome work.

And thanks Ranimate for your comments! I understand what you mean about the losing volume. That's why my rig has 3 sliders to control how much the SS Cntrl should affect the volume deformation (I didn't showed that in my reel because was already over the 3 minutes lenght rule).
But here's how it works:
http://www.giorgiobertolone.com/Reel/ss_controls.jpg
The SS is always driven by the controls so in this example I pushed down a little bit the Head Cntrl. But with the SS sliders I can I say how much volume deformation I need by changing the value on the multiplier. In the first picture with the Head Cntrl always down I have the multiplier to 0, so there is no volume consistency. But in the second picture I have the multiplier to 0.6 and now I have my volume deformation.
I created this separate way to manage the volume because while I was animating the ferret in my animation reel I realized that sometimes I don't want a complete cartoon volume SS, sometimes I want something more realistic. But if I don't separate the parameters I have the same pre-programmed volume deformation for every shot and I think this is a limit for the animator.
And I kinda like sliders and 0 to 1 expressions hehe!:)

I think you have a very solid rig here. The reel could definitely be edited to better show off your work however. First, you have a tendancy to "overshow" everything, moving a control around about 3 times longer than it takes an intelligent viewer to "get it". You really don't have to wiggle it back and forth, just position it the way you would in a real animation situation. That would make the reel much shorter and the download time much more bearable. And more people would end up seeing your excellent work. Consider playing back in faster than real time, which you'll find is common place on TD reels.
On the area where you demo the sim controls and the effect of dampening the values, it isn't terribly clear. I suggest showing a side by side comparison of 2 clones going through the same control action but with different settings. Clearly label them as such. I think this would make both the level of control and the ease of use more apparent.
Hate to crit the reel rather than the rig but I think the rig is great and the reel just isn't doing it justice. Hope this helps.

Good critique tredeger, thanks! I agree, the downloadable version of my reel could be edited better than that The one I linked here it's my first test (I wanted to quickly put the captures together to receive feedback about the rig). But the final DVD version I sent is different (I'm glad that the fixes I made are the same you're suggesting!:)).

Editing it's not important when you have a very good rig. I was able to understand it without problems. Critique should be about rigging, the rest is only subjective. For example, I personally don't like TD reels encoded faster than RT cause we have to stop/pause them, but this is not a criterion of evaluation. Don't worry about that Giorgio, you showed excellent rigging skills.

great job giorgio! i love how you not only made an animation reel but as well as a rigging reel. it was alot of fun watching you develop that character and seeing it progress in the ant farm. i know you will do well in the industry, not just as an animator, but as well as a character td. you've done alot in the little time that we had. good luck to you my fellow italian stallion.

Hey, nice reel. The secondary motion and ctrl setup look great. The skinning needs work. Some areas of weighting or enveloping need improvement (hips, shoulder, feet and ears). Corrective shapes are also needed to maintain volume. The squash and stretch areas especially need volume changes of thinning and thickening (spine, limbs and head... saw that you addressed the head).
There is no doubt you have solid technical skills but for a character TD that is usually only half the battle. Displaying a firm understanding of anatomy and skin deformation is a must in a char TD reel.
You are on your way, Good work.

Giorgio, your reel it's great, 5 stars for me! I know you guys at VFS have less than 6 months to work on your demo reel and considering also your animation short (Yeah, I saw your website!:) Cool design!) I think you did an excellent job showing both creative and technical skills.
Don't worry about finding a job I'm sure you will not have problems (if you are considering my country send me an email, your school is well know here)

Great work. Maybe I could borrow your guy some time and do some fun cartoony animation...I am slowly getting my fix on the pseudo realism and Italian shoes and would like to go in another direction sometime soon. In any case, great work as always and I look forward to seeing what the future holds...

schock: Thank you for your comments, you made a good point and I agree. Now that I don't have deadlines I can definitely spend time on the weights and improve the deformations. Hey, did you worked on "Employee of the Month" short film?
FracoisBennet: Hey thank you man! You are very well informed about VFS!:) Yes, we have less than 6 months to complete our final project and compared to other schools (with 1 or more years to do it) it's really stressful but in the end I think it gives you motivation and determination. Now I'm looking for a job here in North America but thank you for your offer, I want to stay in contact with you!

Ya I sure did work on the Employee of the Month film. It was my thesis in school. The animators I worked with were really good. Lately we have been doing skater matt and concepting for another short film. That short got us all jobs at Pendulum.
As others have said your website is really nice. Are you working on any shorts?
