View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - Character - mdme_sadie

Hey thought i'd join in this time (time allowing), so my first thought for a race/character is a cave "fairy" style creature, it carries a light and lures unwary dwarve miners and cave travelers to their doom in the depths of Middle Earth.

Per-Anders
01-11-2003, 03:17 AM
actually upond refinement my creatures are not fairies themselves, but in their lights they carry fairies as the lure, their magical light luring travelers onwards, their masters are Minos, minotaur style creatures, the creatures i shall be illustrating as known as Khem and their entrapped fairy lights are Siphlin.

Sounds like a cool concept so far! :)

Per-Anders
01-11-2003, 04:52 AM
ok, just a couple of concept sketches

first an idea for how maybe the khem might look

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/concept/khem01.jpg

i was thinking that it needs to be able to camofladge itself should there be too many other creatures around, so that's teh shell, the creature itself is made of rock though too, so we shall see, another idea i'm playing with is that he has a tail that curls up around him in a spiral if he neesd to hide, again will look like a rock.

here's a rough idea for a minos head, it's kinda lizardy/bull/human creature, but i'm still working on teh body to gi with... hey i just thought i'd create three new races for middle earth here hehe, these creatures are an ancient race, i'll think up some mythology to go with them too in due course, they are a step down from the balrogs, but they're still a higher race. they are haughty and intelligent, creatures of cold fire, but like the trolls they cannot withstand sunlight.

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/concept/minos01.jpg

i'll carry on working on these and others till i get something that works, also on a concept for the ikle siphlin, she is bound in the light by thread-thin chains of mythril, the only thing able to hold her in place.

Per-Anders
01-11-2003, 06:17 AM
and a captured siphlin... all very rough, but a start :)

hmm ok, well seeing as i decided to be so over ambitious here :P i had better get going with this, so i started to model the minos head (i should mention at this point this is my second ever head hehe... hopefully i'll actually complete this one, and the other models to make up the scene i'm trying to bring together in my head :) is hould mention i'm using cinems 4d for this.

wire so far... very messy, but plenty of time i hope to clean it up :)

Per-Anders
01-11-2003, 09:03 AM
yup :) hehe, ok now i was quickyl messing aorund with textures for the fairy wings, i figure that possibly the best way to deal with the fairy is for her to actually be 2d as she's so small, so i'ev been playing around with the textures just now, though this is unrefined (i want to get more of a layework look, but i want the metalic effect too)

so here is a quick test of the texture on the wings, the wings are just a path from illustrator. i'm going for the refractive material like butterfly wings, only a little bit more silvery

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/movietests/wingstest01.mov

and this is the texture as it stangs now, i'm going ot refine this some before it gets into teh image, i want a more intricate pattern so it's going to involve more hand drawn stuff.

thanks :)

working in a disjointed way works for my schitzo thought patterns lol. anyhow it's late, i've not done much more, but i thought i'd post and update before i hit the sack... tommorow i work on the main creature some and get at least the head done :)

oh yeah and i am going to shrink his body some... looking at it just now i think the head has to be big on teh shoulders, like a bull

here's the minos wire...

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/model/minosheadwire02.jpg

and the render... he's kinda cute and fwuffy just now... but he's not going to keep that way ;)

lol. hehe, he's no for the eating! hehe, anyhow the eyes are basically visible lights in the eye sockets, simple as that really.

i don't know if i'm going ot have much time to do anything today as it's a cleaning and getting house jobs done kinda day here at Chez Sadie.

but if i do anything i'd going to be starting off on the Khem person. :)

Per-Anders
01-11-2003, 11:10 PM
ok can't spend long on this today, so i only just started a few minutes ago, but i'm working on the khem now, here's his head so far, i'm going to make him far more asymetrical because he's rocky, but first i wanna get the rough shape in before i break it down :)

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/model/khemheadwire01.jpg

Per-Anders
01-12-2003, 02:58 AM
so just adding a little more detail in betweens cleaning up, and playing aorund with procedural textures, wanna keep him sharp stone looking.

Per-Anders
01-13-2003, 03:53 AM
ok,just messing around with the interior texture for the "shell", i want it to be built up of layers and ending in crystals, like it's grown around the khem... they're probably the eggs that they come out of, in fact i might put it as part of my mythology that the khem are the beings that are born out of amethyst eggs, we still see the egg shells around today... (in which case i might change the material that my creature is made out of to something a little more crystaline..

anyhow here's just messing around with teh crystal material for a little while.

thanks guys :), i know compared to others in the 3d scene i'm a newbie and i know how much i gotta learn, but this is a great place to be doing the learning :)

anyhow just been playing around a little more to get the crystal look on the khem "shell".

ok, just testing scale/materials against each other before i carry on modellin' the little dude (i know it's a weird way of working, but it works for me :) and hey i've got three characters to model here!), gives me a glimpse of how much more detial i gotta add before this character's going to "come alive" (at least i hope).

slowly building up... still just flat colours, no texturing till i get the whole head done at least...

is it just me or do other people find working on these things slightly eerie at times?

Johnlittle

ok so there's lots of faults on this (like the ears position and relation to teh jaw line and shape) but it's late right now and i think i need to go to sleep otherwise tommorow i'm goign to be good for nothing.

most of the faults should be covered with the hair though so ishoul get away with it... also she's going to be tiny, but i thought it was worth making her as part of the whole challenge... also as i want to use this whole thing as an excercise in learning... so anyhow here's my first ever 3d cg female head WIP.

Per-Anders
01-18-2003, 07:09 PM
thankyou guys, this challenge is great for me to pick up and learn loads from all the talent on this board.

unfortunately i just read that the mods have (rather arbitrarily imo) banned minotaur :annoyed: they were never in any of his books as far as i was aware *grrr* but i'll still carry on working on the minos later on, adding horns all over him, his face is more reptilian really than bull so i shall see if i can get away with it despite the name, and anyway he's a secondary creature. oh well, at least i have these other creatures. :)

Per-Anders
01-19-2003, 02:23 AM
ok, started to play around a little with painting some textures quickly (again a first for me to paint human skin, i'm usually a procedural kinda person).

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/model/fairyheadrend06.jpg

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/model/fairyheadrend07.jpg

now i gotta work out a good method to get teh hair working, i was thinking the old one of sheets with a bitmap (i've got shave & haircut, but the render times are just way too high and i've not re-installed it in the new version of cinema). what do you guys think? what's a good hair solution... i want her to have almost blue white platinum long straight soft hair.

so while i think about that i'm going to carry on working down over the upper chest, wings (from the inner shoulderblades and i guess down the arms... then i have to make her dress, ,legs chains holding her in place and the lamp taht she's in.

chi
01-19-2003, 08:03 AM
man i only wish i had shave and a hair cut for c4d...one of the main reasons i switched to xsi for hair...i hate its renderer:) c4d sooo goood...any ways i love every single texture you've made so far...specialy the shiny stones...and the lighting on the face i superb....keep up the good work...and play with S&H im sure you can optimize for faster renders

Per-Anders
01-20-2003, 02:43 AM
grr... shave is not the easiest packge and i've not played around with it enough to get good results just yet... though i suspect my main problem here is i need to scale teh head up loads in order to make controllable hair, as i don't want her to have such *big* hair or such gothish hair... anyhow i thought i'd post a couple of experiments, then i'll go back and play some more... just as well i tried now so that i wored out i needed to rescale, before i carried on modelling and got everything completely wrong, easier to fix at this stage...

thanks, i think you're right, i'll try and fix that next time i do some work on this, i still have to fix the horrible hair too... it's so hard to make a face feminine and work well... oh well, lots of work to do and lots to learn :)

Per-Anders
01-20-2003, 09:42 AM
ok, i quickly did a little nose job on her... nothing too much... but here it is, let me know if more is needed off... her nose is a fairly small button as it is from the side view (the wire shown here) and i also narrowed the structure but maybe it needs more still, or maybe now it's fine... anyhow i also have ot work on her body more.

hehe, good idea, she's goint o be glowing as it is as she's a light, but i'll see what i can do, the muscle on the cheek is actually a uv error! i need to fix that. , so that's texture only, not the model itself, hmm dont' kno what happened there, seems to have got pinched, oh well, i guess i'm goint to have to fix it sooner or later :? you should enter by the way!

:D Ya I will enter one day......I am tweaking that monstrosity of a head I sent you ages ago, looks human now...hahahaaa,big changes :)

UV error,oh ok thats bizarre,it must just be a gradient type effect happening creating the illusion of depth.

I have your thread book marked now bud

Stu.

Per-Anders
01-22-2003, 01:46 AM
thanks, actually i found that it wasn't what i suspected a uv error, but in fact a shadow error, upping teh shadow map resoltuion seems to have solved that for the most part... now i've finally managed to get the hair closer to what i'm after in terms of overall shape, but it still looks like straw and i need to up the aa a lot for it to look good, but at least it gives an idea, i'm going to have to make it less yellow too, not to mention fixing the colliding geometry... lots to do, lots to do

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/model/fairyheadrend12.jpg

Per-Anders
01-22-2003, 03:02 AM
right, slowly getting there, very slowly... but still not really what i want, i guess at least now i'm happy with that i think i'll be able to get what i want with a lot of work. the hair is rendered on a low poly mesh above the haed and that mesh is made invisible, seems to do teh trick, then all i ahve to do is make some collision detection happen and i should be ok :)

thanks flingster, dies and kiwi... still building my icemaiden fairy, and experimenting really... hhe, anyhow in my freemoments i'm adding like one row of polys at a time! lol. here's the latest update, with hair to check whether the eye's look ok or not, i want to work on teh skin texture some, but not right now, not till i've modelled out some more of her body, i need to work on it to make it believable, but no the current warm colours that it is, more almost carcass blue, but still alive... i'm going to think about that while i do other things, maybe some skin experts out there can give me a few helpful pointers.

MaRvI - Thanks, i think it's getting there slowly but surely.

stu - cheers, the blue carcass is really more ... er... interestingly pale i guess hehe, though of course now the hair needs to be retweaked, but i'll get there in teh end :) it's just being patient and waiting for the test renders to finish.

anyhow now i'm thinking that i should amke her in her pose, after all i'm not animating her, and time is limited, especially at the rate i'm working on this (like a tiny ammount in my breaks), i was originally going to make her in neutral, rig her, and pose her... anyhow here's some minor updates and tests...

thanks mangled poly :)

here's a quick update on the wings texture, and a little movei of it in motion, i'm quite pleased with the faceted dragonfly effect i've got going on here, the movei is quicktime and around 210k

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/movietests/fairyspin01.mov

here's a still from it

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/model/fairytorsorend03.jpg

and a small version of teh alpha i'm using to get this effect... i might change it to working form teh transparency instead to make it more like it's got a film accross it (form teh specular), but i'll do a couple more tests first.

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/challenge/textures/fairywingtexture.jpg

and i might do some more extensive searches for mayfly wings to incorporate into the veins texture to make it look more natural.

Hey md_sadie have you thought of putting that image in as the bump map then have all the transparency, specularity, and color run as gradients off of the bump map....that's what I've been doing with some of my stuff....the snakes on my weapons are run by my bump map, including the coloring on them. I'm running in Lightwave, I don't know if you are or not. I thought I would mention it if you were using it and maybe you could benefit from it. Looking great!

thanks, good idea, but it's alreaedy in the bump map, just subtly.

the actual configuration for the wings is kinda complex as it uses light incidence, face incidence and standard gradients mixed in using a cell layered image from photoshop, there's no gradient based on bump unfortunately in cinema :( in fact there are several procedurals in lightwave i wish i had, but then i'd miss a lot of cinemas stuff... no app is perfect i guess!

i'm not going to try to post the texture tree as it's just way too huge as there's no simple texture tree like in maya in cinema, so it would be loads and loads of screen grabs of all the layer elements which would be way too much!

anyhow, now i'm concentrating on a little bit of the modelling for a while, before i play any more with this texture, i'm trying to give her more lacewings look, so it's going to be another go with levels in photoshop to get rid of too much grey lightening up things in areas i don't want it to... still so much to do!!!

ok just the tiniest ammount of modelling later before i go to bed, i'm going tohave to sit down and draw out how i want teh arms properly i think, unless i can find a good photographic reference for this, maybe in a ballet book/site.

and a wire seeing as i've not posted a wire in a long while

I love that wing transparency

I think you might have more luck with that pose in modern dance or cant remember the other name for the other style at the moment.

right just started a quick work on the legs, been doing my darned accounts all day :(

anyhow, here's the wire, have to tweak this like crazy and add a lot of detail, but it's a start, at least i feel through doing all this modelling work my standard is improving, and i'm getting a lot faster at geting to where i want it to be... only trouble being, so much still feels like serendipity when it goes right, which is worrysome... i guess as this is not just my first female head, but my first realistic human i'm learning a lot... heh, here am i turning this thread into an online diary! lol, i thought i'd had enough of that when i did the kinski diary...

anyhow leg...

and a quick messing around with inverse volumetric lights...

maybe i'll only have the wings glo rather than the body too... dunno, this seems fairy magical though to me ;)

You need a secretary bud :)

What about a light gel so you could have a sort of shimmering of light emitting from the wings, ooh tiles > hexagons maybe?

hehe, i married a secretary... but the last thing she wants to do when she gets home form work is take down my memos.. i don't get it...

i'll have to look into that gel lights could be good, i was thinking maybe a swirling volumetric effect, but hen as the lights not to large i want more of a star shaped hard light, but the gel thing might give it a litle more interest, but it has to be subtle shades of blue for it to work... i'll have a play laters.

ok i just added the legs, theyr'e goign to need fine tuning, and possibly some stretching, but i thought before i did that, i'd mes around just posing them quickly with a very simple leg rig to give me something ot think about with the pose structure, seeing as i'm just using fk there's no wories about scaling this stuff, and theyr'e jsut using standard falloffs so life is easy...

Legs are looking good :) ......they look a bit bare,a bit Disney fairy tale, ish, maybe a tat or a gold filigree band around the thigh would break the area up a bit,or even some leather of some description. What about thigh high leather boots?.

Hahhaa get yourself a secretary for real and you might find your wife "wants to do your accounts all of a sudden :D

lol... actually she's goign to be chained up in mythril, so that's why theyr'e kinda bare just now... (also hence the "i'm busting for a pee" pose!). but maybe she should have a tatoo up the side of her legs or something... gotta keep it clear that it's bare skin though... hehe, anyhow i think time for beds!

...so much more talent than I thought you had... I thought you were just a techy!

You know that because of this thread you're going to have to represent C4D more by continuing this level of art!

The rock creature rules! but his arms and legs aren't nearly as stylized as the rest of his body. .... its... body.

The wings on the fairy are amazing! The face has a really clean mesh. My only crit on the fairy is that I think you should have two layers of wings on it... I don't know how it will look at the place where the two layers would overlap but I think it's worth a try.

ah no you see, this whole time i've been busy stealing all your thoughts and ideas hehe ;) i've been busy learning from everyone here, it's thanks to you guys that i'm where i am now :)

yes i never finished the rock creatures arms and legs... theyr'e just tubes thus far. but i promise i'm goin to go back to him, i just needed to take a break and model her. the double wing thing sounds good to me. it's certainly too flat right now, i was thinking of either adding in a couple of broken bits as she might have got a little damaged in her capture. the double wing is a good idea and makes more sense to give it a bit more solidity without loosing the fragility. thanks adrian :)

That is really starting to come together now way cool!! some really nice modelling. From the renders of the hair i have seen they look a lil strange, kinda looks like theres is no shadowing to the hair. Good work lets see more :)

kiwi

Two sets of wings thats a good idea  .....instead or broken bits what about one with a kink or bent top so it looks like she has/is just that little bit to big for her cage :) ,it will make your creature look more nasty as a result as well.

nick - thanks, yes i'mm still stringling against shave, but i think i should be able to sort it out, i need to remove some of the frizz for sure.

stu - i'll work on that in a while

anyhow here's an update, just working on the arms. it's very hard to get something believable and strong when you don't want things to eb overtly muscly... but i still feel i need to work and practice on these "duller" areas to get good topology. i also changed the dress material a bit too.

Well done Mdme_sadie!
I like your concept.
Maybe your Fairy is a bit out of proportion. My opinion is that the head is a bit too big!
But Nice work!!!!:applause: :applause:
