This is a painting of a Zen Garden that I've been workin on for a couple weeks. I've probably put about 15 hours into it already. I probably should have started posting it sooner, but I felt I had to get it to a certain point before showing it. Obviously I didn't, and having followed things on this forum for bit I see that people post things quite early.

I've got alot of big questions abut this image. Such as: How is the composition? Am I overdoing it with the god-rays? Should there be god-rays? Can you tell that the monk is floating in the air, or does it just look like he's sitting on the grass behind the pond? Do my color choices work? Is the lighting convincing?

Also there are a few things un-finished here: the foreground paving, some of the rocks, the waterfalls, and the cherry blossom braches. I'll probably work on the monk's face some more as well.

So, what do you all think? All and any crits are welcome :)

Looking good .. i like the use of colour and composition :bounce:

.. only one thing the monk looks abit like he is floating at the moment.

You mean floating? He's actually supposed to be floating. Infact I'd like to find a way to make it more clear that he is floating. I put a shadow under him on the ground to show that he's hovering in the air. Guess it's not really very clear though...

Are you trying to make it similar to this?

Because Michael Whelan's Shonto's Garden is a hard act to follow ;)

Not exactly, although some of the ideas for it came from that.

I know I'm a long way off being able to produce something comparable to the work of Michael Whelan :p
