tmr232 06-04-2006, 11:47 AM I have recently begun working on an animation concerning mosquitos (details will be realeased later on).
Here is what I have so far:

This just came to me when looking at your image. I'm assuming you used Yafray to render.
Do you know why it creates that granial effect? I don't like it -I just use Blender Internal most of the time.
As for C&C on your work:
I'm guessing you're going for the cartoony angle. I think he look bit too much like a flying ant rather than a mosquito though. Mosquitos are usually balls of fur with eyes and wings. From the cartoony perspective I definately miss those crazy eyes mosquito's have.
Should the mouth (whatever its called) be that sharp at the tip?
I love the detail overall, especially the wings, those are sweet.

Consideringthepickle:
I did not use yafray, it is blender's internal renderer, no lights, 5 AO samples. about the fur and the eyes, I will try and making something, thanks!
Tamir.
The grainy look on the render is caused by Ambient occlusion. The way it works is the less samples you use, the more grain you get. Ambient occlusion helps to light the model, but it is processor intensive. That's why you can lessen the samples to make Blender render faster. When you get the lights as you want them, you can crank AO samples all the way up.
At first I didn't bother with AO either, but when I finally started I quickly discovered the benefits.

Oh, I see. And here I always thought it had something to do with Yafray. I should expirement with AO sometime.

Here is the mosquito with new eyes / haircut. I only spent a few minutes on them because I only wanted to get a rough idea of how it might look.

Tamir.
EDIT:
Concerning the use of AO and a small amount of samples- I am currently in the modelling stage, I don't want to mess around with lighting' or have long render times, but I do want a good look at the model. so I use AO with only 5 samples.

Hey Tamir, what's up man?
The mosquito, IMO, will look better without the fur and with the old eyes.
It's much more cartoony style.
If you want to use fur, try a short fur and much more distributed.
Good luck in your project.

Thanks friedbrain, cara-rj.
About the fur: I think that I wont use it, it makes it less cartoony IMO and makes it look like a fly...
About the eyes: I hadn't decided yet. I like the old ones better but I think that I need to experiment with the eyes a little more to be sure.

I was looking the mosquito and i couldnt figure out what was wrong with it, becouse something was bothering... then i think got it.... your mosquito is too "round", mosquito should be more "ellipse"/longer... thats why it looks like a fly right now.
i dont know how to descrbe it, but here is example: http://imageblast.com/ibport/hirez/FUN4.JPG (its maybe bit extreme, but i think you understand what i mean):D
but its just one of my thoughts...
but the overall concept is good:thumbsup:

Here is an update based on comments from a different site:
http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/9233/mosquitonewlegsao6zl.th.jpg (http://img192.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mosquitonewlegsao6zl.jpg)
I made the legs more mosquito-like.
please comment!
Tamir.
Now your mosquito starts to look like a mosquito. The legs are spot on now. It seemed like there was something wrong with it, but I couldn't put my finger on it. After seeing the new legs I immediately knew what was it.
Keept the cartoony face, do not put hair in it, and try to get him just a little bit transparent shell thru which you can see his stomack turning red if the insect has digested blood.
If you are planning on animating it, I for one would be interested to see how that turns out.
Keep it up, and also keep it true to style you choose / have chosen. It will be great.

sorry for the gigantic lack of updates, but I was busy / not in the mood for it (please don't throw rocks at me :D).
Here's an update:
http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/2766/newheadbody2vz.jpg
I modified it's mouth, it's middle body part and it's head. I think the last one was better, but I'm still testing.

Personally while I like the rest of your updates, the old curly-q mouth was much better, I think. And personal feelings aside, the extra curvature of that mouth would lend itself to more animation possibilities than the new, straighter one. More personality. It also fit in better with the design of the wings.

Hey Tamir, nice update.
Maybe you could make the mosquito a little bit more feminine, 'cause it's the female mosquito that sucks blood.
That's just an idea.:)
