igami 06-04-2006, 07:05 AM LATEST UPDATES 6/11/06
Hey guys,
Here's a latest version of my bobber bike rendered in low res. I added the engine and all the other extras in there. I did the engine componets the best that I can with the reference I have. I also fix a little bit of the color shader, I thought the grain was too much before. so I completely took it out. I'm also planning on adding some decals on the body, do you guys think its a good idea? or its better leave it plain? Let me know what you guys think. Crits are welcome. Cheers :)

Hey guys!
I'm a Maya user for a while and but I want to learn 3D Max just to expand more of my knowledge in 3D. I've been studying 3D Max for about 3 months, on and off though, about modeling, texturing, and lighting, hehe...anyway, I want to model something simple just to get the hang of 3D Max and I would like some comments. I want to model a bobber bike so I research some reference around the web. Here are some of the ref's pictures.

Here's the frame I worked on last night. Just setup a quick studio lighting and threw in a quick texture.

Nice work so far, great work on the front glass/light material.
The chrome light itself looks jagged, add another smooth layer on it.
Also, the steer attachments are too thin looking from above, they need to be
2 times as wide. Also your spring fork of yours does nothing, it's mounted between
the fork parts that are one element. You have a mixture of a normal fork and a spring fork.
Pick one, but not both :p
Here is how a spring fork looks like:

Can't wait to see more updates, good luck!

Hey simon,
well the spring I did it off from another reference image. i thought it looked pretty cool, lol anyway, i understand wat u mean on the springs, u saying i should put it on the outside instead towards the inside right? the steering bar i also did it off from another reference, i think bobber bike have shorter bars. Let me double check, i could be wrong. oh yea, thanks for reminding me about the jagged edge on some objects. I didn't fully smooth it out yet. :D can u send the pic of spring fork pic again if u don mind? for some reason it didn't show up...:\ well i will update some more pics tomorrow, i finish the back wheels today. :) Thanks for the crits! :D

Just google on "bobber" or "fork" or whatever, here is a nice side view of a spring fork:

That reference you used for the spring, either it's wrong, or you looked at ir wrong, cause the it is now, it would not work (the springs).

Hey simon,
I decided not to use the fork becuz i did some research and most of them are located inside. So I deleted and leave it empty. I also smooth out a lot of the parts to have a better reflection when rendered. I know I need some work in the lighting part, thats because I spent no time on the lighting. Just simple studio lighting to get the job done fast. Anyway, thanks for your critiques. Really appreciated. thanks! :)

Thank you guys :) I'm currently working on the engine right now. A little tough becuz some reference have bad angle but I will try the best that I can.
The shader is really simple, nothing special. The way I did the chrome shader is use V-Ray material, Diffuse = Black, Reflection = about 90% white, fresnel refl = on, and unlink the marker check, IOR = 16, and everything else is default. Also, chrome is very reflective, so depending how you set up your scene is critical. Also, your camera angle is important. So a lot is trial and error. The way I set up my scene is just a basic studio set up that can be found on the web. Anyway, hopefully that help. :) Chk back soon for more updates and crits welcome.

Hey guys,
I was wondering, what color theme should I render the bike in, to make it look more stand out? Anyone got any ideas?

With that chrome id use a nice glossy charcoal.
Engine looks pretty impressive, good job... what is still left to do?

The modeling is pretty much done, except I notice I miss the tail light and maybe
a license plate. But I still think i'm missing something, for some reason, it looks a bit
too plain. Should I put some color theme in the BG or light it a little warmer color?
Any ideas?

What makes it look like something is missing to me is the gap between the engine and the seat\front section. But thats how it looks. Render it on a nice background, so much detail deserves a proper scene, like a old garage with this brand new bike... or it standing in a field er something.
It would look cooler for me personaly if the bike got a bit dirty aswell

hey Wardile, I like your idea about the old garage or standing on the field. I'm going to research for some pics on old garages and bikes in standing field. As far as dirty bike look, sounds cool to me! :D can't wait to start on it after work! thanks for the comments!
