Hey, guys. :)

I'm hoping to find the time to work on this as well as some of the other stuff I'm doing. With the extra time as it is, hopefully I'll be able to at least get a model done. :)

I'm still looking through all the posts to make sure my ideas (whatever they may be) won't copy anyone, but I'll be sure to post drawings and such here. :D

EDIT:

WARNING! PARTIAL NUDITY IS IN THIS THREAD!

Nothing major, but I felt I should put a warning in case people have youngin's present. :)

Ok, here's my idea so far. I'm still in the drawing phase, so it could change a lot.

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cgtalk/medusa1.jpg

Medusa/Naga thing! :D

I'm thinking of making "her" a bit more Warrior-like.... whatdya think? Femanine robes and stuff or warrior-medusa?

Thanks!

hey mtmckinley, nice to see you here again!

I like the feminine robes idea rather than the medusa thing, but im sure whatever you produce will be great. Good luck, looking forward to more!

mtmckinley
01-11-2003, 03:44 AM
Well, it was going to be medusa either way... just one was dressed up medusa and the other was warrior medusa. :p

Sorry for the confusion.

Ha ha, well, there ya go :P

So, medusa in flowing fabric, then? Perhaps in robes and a sword and shield... a combo of the two.

As for Middle Earth mythos:

"The Medusa, or as it is formally called, Midusae, are a demon race of feminine beings with snakes making their hair. Otherwise, they look very elf-like, with dark, glassy eyes and pale skin. Most are bi-pedal, but some species have large, scaley snake-like bodies instead of legs.

Their main abilities lie in their eyes. If so provoked, or perhaps just on a whimsy, the Midusae can cast their gaze on another being and cause him or her to instantly turn into stone. This does not seem to have an affect on other Midusae, but there are legends of heroes polishing thier shields to a mirror-like finish and using the snake creature's own stony stare against it.

Brash and irritable, the Medusae are not known for their formidable physical ability, but there are those who have picked up the sword. They mainly reside in underground caverns, preferably some sort of precious stone quarry."

More drawings to come!

Nice idea mtmckinley...........It will be quite a challenge, but well within your reach. I am interested in seeing your adaption of the legendary creature/being.

Thanks, Kurt. :) Yours is looking good!

Virtuoso - I'm hoping it turns out well. :)

Here's my next sketch.... in this one, she's got pretty much normal, human figure with the obvious differences of her black eyes and snakes for hair. :p

I'm going to try another one with a bit more reptilian features and see how it looks.

Interested in comments and ideas! :D

Here's one with a bit more fantasy elements. More reptilian looking. also, my bro thought it'd be cool to actually see the snakes growing from her head, so the head wrap isn't quite as dense in this one, although the final will probably have a few more wraps and maybe a 4th head.

Thanks, guys!

I like the beauty concept more than the reptile thing since this could be a lost elv or something, anyway, both sketches are really nice - so if you are not a good concept artist what am I? Don't make yourself too bad ;)

:buttrock:

thanks, Ahrens!

I'll see about toning down the ugly for the next one. :D

Magnusv
01-13-2003, 09:20 AM
Give her two faces, one ugly and one beautiful. A two faced Medusa. Just kidding. I love the theme.:wavey:

mtmckinley
01-14-2003, 08:19 AM
Two faces? That's an interesting an idea... I might play with that one. :) As for now, though, I think I've at least got the "beauty" side fleshed out. I thought it would be interesting to her character to give her a viscious scar on her right side. How did she get it? Some accident? A battle? One of her head-snakes throw a temper tantrum? :D

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cgtalk/medusa4.jpg

Next: Body sketches!

I know I'm kinda going slow. Hope you guys don't mind. I've got a lot of tests being done to hopefully get a job. And with a project as detailed as this, I like to plan ahead. At this point, I think I like how her head snakes are situated.

Thanks for the comments! Keep 'em coming. :D

erilaz
01-14-2003, 08:23 AM
She's really attractive, in a snake-like "I'm going to kill you horribly" kind of way!

The sketches are great. Keep it coming.:D

mtmckinley
01-14-2003, 09:59 AM
Thanks, erilaz! :D

I've got an idea with that "two face" thing, but we'll see how it looks on paper. Also toying between having her be bipedal or have the snake body like a Naga beast. :) Concepts will decide, I imagine.

Sorry for the delay. Working on job tests. :p

I hope to get back to sketchin' this weekend, get it all fleshed out as to pose, dress, scene, etc and then get to modeling! :D

Anybody have any suggestions regarding clothes? I'm thinking mostly flowing, dressy stuff, some jewelry, but perhaps a breastplate? I'm thinking along the lines of how Galadriel (sp) appeared to wear a breastplate when she was tempted by the One Ring. Instead of making it fish-themed, going for a reptile-theme. Also, I got an idea for a weapon she might could have. Don't know if I'd actually have her using it. Mainly as a set decoration.

My thoughts are that this particular Naga (a derivative of Medusa/Midusae) is a secluded warrior, who hasn't been in battle for quite some time. I want to keep her young-looking, though, so let's say that, like elves, she doesn't age that much.

Thanks guys! :D

mtmckinley
01-26-2003, 03:53 AM
Again, sorry for not updating. :(

Hopefully, the time I was hoping for last week will come this weekend.

Here's a sketch of the basic idea for her outfit at this time. It'll probably change. Think the headgear is too "Sauron"?

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cgtalk/medusa5.jpg

mtmckinley
01-28-2003, 03:47 AM
Well, maybe this WIP will get a response. :p

I'm definitely improving in my drawing ability, I think. Still have some kinks to work out, like her face is kinda funky, and I think her head might be too big... and her right hand's too small, I think. lol

Oh well. But this is my idea for her final pose. I'm thinking that she's coming up out of some pit, like a bath, and the viewer has just caught her. She may be a little over-dressed for that. I'll contemplate the scene later. ;) I'm planning a cavern-type environment with armor and weapons off to the side, like she's been caught without a weapon handy.

At this point, I don't believe I'm going to finish this project in time for the challenge. I do definitely want to finish it, though, and I'll have to move it to the WIP and Finished Threads when the time comes.

Also, I've decided that to inspire more "fantasy" rather than "mythology" to change her snake hair into some fantasy creature heads sprouting from her noggin. :D

I'd appreciate comments! This drawing is obviously not finished yet.

EDIT: Here's the final figure drawing. Modeling to commence!

Thanks, STRIKE. :)

I've got the basic figure done. I'll upload it soon. I'm planning on starting the model today. I'll concentrate on the background when I come to that. I'd like to try to at least get the character done for the challenge. ;)

Here we go! :D

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cgtalk/head1.jpg
http://www.mtmckinley.net/cgtalk/snakehead1.jpg

What do you think about leaving the eyes off the snakeheads? Gives it an interesting look, I think. Maybe some have eyes, others dont... ;)

Clanger
01-29-2003, 12:06 AM
Love the Fantasy snakes with big nasty teeth, think they will need eyes so you can really get a nice evil look.

The Woman's head is coming along very well though I'd prefere she followed your sketch closer. The angled eyes and shape of her lips looks really good in the sketch, more plain jane in the model.

mtmckinley
01-29-2003, 12:07 AM
Thanks, Clanger, I'll see about making those changes. The head is only just started, so obviously got a LOT of tweaking to do. ;)

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cgtalk/head2.jpg

Here's one getting the layout of the snakeheads setup. :)

mtmckinley
01-29-2003, 07:04 AM
Added eyes to the ... I need to call them something else instead of "snakeheads".... k, I've added eyes to the headsnakes.

:D

Also starting to merge the tendrils into the medusa's scalp and into the back of the headsnakes. I tweaked her face a bit to hopefully closer match the drawing... the not-so-wide mouth and slightly slanted eyes. The facial expression will be done later with a morph, I think. That's waaaay down the road, though. :)

She's coming along better than I had anticipated. :D

Comments/Suggestions are welcome!

very nice mike! I like the lips smaller like you have them now, she looks much more attractive that way...but maybe thats not what you are going for considering shes got snakes on her head. The snakes reminded me of the movie tremors before you modeled the eyes. I kinda liked the idea of them having no eyes. It could be that the womans eyes are their eyes. It would also make for a cool animation to have them feeling around for food. I think the teeth are a bit much for some reason. They just dont look logical to me, like they couldnt really eat anything with those. Maybe once you model more detail in the gums it would work better...but in order to really close their mouth, or have room to swallow something, they would need to retract, like a snakes fangs. Speaking of which, imo i think they teeth dont need the four in the middle. Just have the two on the sides and make them resemble snakes fangs, only much bigger and more ferocious. However I do think they look cool, its just something i noticed. Don't worry about it if you like the way it looks. But your idea about some having eyes and some not...that would be cool too. You should definitely randomize them somewhat. You know different placement of teeth and all that jazz. Good luck!

mtmckinley
01-29-2003, 06:02 PM
Thanks for the comments, Rye!

How about something like this:

Thanks, Magnusv,

I'll see about toning down the teeth. I kinda like the idea of having big mouths full of teeth at the end of her tendrils. :D

i really like the side view! This is looking great, and i do think it looks better with the agp in the teeth. They definitely look ferocious and hungry :) I think the bottom jaw has a lot of weight to it, but the hinge of the jaw looks really weak in comparison, like the would have a hard time controlling those heavy mouths. I'm being nitpicky though, youre doing a great job with this, keep it up :wip:

I love this..!!
Coming along very nicely...
I like the concept you have going on here and I love the big teeth!!
Keep up the good work...

only crit I can see has been mentioned I would throw in more muscles on the snake heads in the jaw area to beef them up...

Looking really good so far, a couple of things to keep in mind when working on the snakes; I realize they’re fantasy based, but a close look at real snakes will help bring them to life. The neck should connect to the lower jaw more, it should also be a bit thicker. If you look at a snake too, they narrow near the head then increase in girth shortly after, before getting smaller again at their tails. The woman is looking really good too, I’ll wait to comment much on her till you get further, but I’d rotate out the ear more and maybe add a little more thickness to the top of it where it attaches to the head. Also, while I like the veil idea, maybe you should make it transparent and include the slashed eye idea, thought it added a lot more story to the character. Looking great though, keep her coming.. hehe.. a little juvenile humor found in that comment…:D

mtmckinley
01-29-2003, 09:47 PM
Thanks so much, everybody! You're right about the jaw, it does look pretty flimsy.

Rhid1en - I was going to do normal snakes originally, but like you say, I went more for fantasy elements. I'll see about making some of those changes, though. :)

And that is my plan for the veil. :D

Thanks again! I really appreciate your help.

It looks really neat so far, but I have a couple of ideas. I think the bottom jaw needs to be narrower.

Are you planning on putting in tongues? I think that would be a great addition. Along with that, how about adding some smaller teeth in between the big fangs. I think it would look better with more teeth in the front.

Also, I agree with Rhid1en, the neck to jaw should be thicker and perhaps a bit wider too.

Just my two cents. I'm looking forward to your final piece!

Obviously need to break up the skin on the tendrils somewhat, although textures will handle that mostly. I think the body can be started soon. ;)

The side pic kinda reminds me of the woman you see on some of those old Egyptian coins or something... Cleopatra or Nefirtiti or somebody.

looking really good... it's progressing quite nicely... I know you just started the body, but she needs a rib cage... oh and still think the snakes bodies need some thickening up.. check out this pict of a thin snake, it still widens signifigantly shortly after the head, even if fantasy based, I think it will just add more realism to them.. but that's just my opinion!

mtmckinley
01-31-2003, 03:27 AM

Wow!!! Great Model:eek: Only thing I can think of to crit is maybe the snakes could use some kind of defining lip line to show that the teeth are coming out of the mouth instead of off of their faces. Excellent model though.... very clean:thumbsup: Keep up the great work... can't wait to see this one finished! 3DF.

3D Freak - Thanks a lot, 3D Freak! I am planning on keeping the teeth protruding from the "jaw" so to speak, as I do want to keep a "fantasy" aspect to the snakes. Thanks!

I've been pouring over mountains of por... er... reference material, and I think the torso is pretty much to the end of my focus. I still am going to tweak it later, I'm sure, but I think I'll go on to the arms, now. :)

DUDE it looks awesome! The torso has a very nice shape to it! The arms could use some work though. The line in the forearm is way too pronounced, and it takes away from her sleekness. The forearm muscles are usually not so toned. I hope you don't mind but I did a drawover for you.

http://64.186.229.252/~ryana/art/womanref_front.jpg

The deltoid (i think thats what its called) should be elongated. It should come to about one third the length of the arm. Now that i think about im not even sure if i did this right, but the forearm is usually about 3/4 the length of the...um top part of the arm :) It could be the perspective youve rendered it at, but it looks like your forearm is considerably longer. Now the way you have your arm modeled, the wrist is twisting so the palm of the hand would be facing the ground. I've drawn a really bad example (my hand has never been steady with a wacom tablet) of how the muscles twist with the wrist in this scenario. Modeling the hand with palm facing out would be a more natural position for the muscles, but its not neccesary. Hopefull this helps a little bit. Mind you im definitely no expert, so if I'm wrong someone please correct me. This really is looking good man, keep it up! :applause:

Thanks, Nurb'd!

Thanks a lot, Rye! The arms are still very early, but your overdraw really helped point out what needs to be done! Thanks a bundle!

I have a tendancy of making things too detailed and then finding out I need to get rid of it, so, yeah, her arms are probably going to be very much smoothed down, and not so muscled. I kinda like her back like that though, so I may keep it. ;) I've been taking a look at the famous Aki Ross in a swimsuit pic for some help in this regard.

Ok, here's the pose that I'm liking at the moment. On the left is the model and on the right, obviously, is what I want to do next with the cloak. Forgive the messy drawing, as I don't have a stylus or anything. :(

The butt seems quite pronounced alla sudden (baby got back! :) Ha! Beat ya to the joke!) so I'll probalby bring her in some. heh heh It's gonna be covered though, so not a huge deal. I think I also need to situate the snakes some, especially the rattle tail.

Thanks!

Great work on the model. Looking very nice and i love the snake heads :) cracking teeth!!!

The female model is nice and clean looking good job. Tho Imho I think that she needs a more pronounced rib cage, the front of the rib cage needs to form out more just above the stomach. it looks like she has one long stomach area. Umm basically im trying to say that there needs to be more definition to the rip cage above the stomach.

Just now you can see the unatural way the breasts lie across the chest, by widening the chest and pushing foward the ribcage at the front should make the body have a more natural look. Hope that makes sense :) On the whole the model and concept is very cool keep up the great work!!!

P.s those snakes heads are truely awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been toying with the ribcage... having a really pronounced ribcage in real life seems kinda ugly to me ( no offense meant to the thin girls hanging around. ;) I just like a little meat on my woman! LOL). I can see what you mean, though. She does need some sort of indication of the ribcage.

It shall be done!

Thanks! :)

yeah fantastic job

She is very alluring if you ignore the snakes and claws that could take Mr. Manhood away :shame:

I really like the work.

In the last pic you posted, I would relax here leading shoulder a bit. Maybe even give her a little torso twist to loosen her up...

A few pics back you have some shots that look like they are using GI. If I remember right, you were using GI Joe for Maya?

Anyway, nice stuff...oh, and your site taught me to texture polys, thanks a ton.

Thanks, H13! :) The robe is coming along.

Thanks, Hickory2.5! I'll definitely see about making those changes. And yes, it was GIJoe for Maya I was using previously. I'm using 3 directional and 1 Ambient light of varying intensities and colors now.

Glad to hear my site helped you out! :D

lol, thanks guys. :)

Do you think I should put a nudity warning on the thread's title? I don't want it to seem as if I'm just trying to draw in viewers, though.

Here's an update:

Thanks, Azazel! :)

Just lots and lots of cutting and tweaking. lol

Robe is coming along pretty good. I know the shoulder area looks funky right now. It'll be smoothed out eventually:

Really nice modeling and concepts. :applause:
I would love the way clothes fall over her skin, it really brings up her feminility.

Do you know where do I find some tutorials about clothes modeling?

way to go man! This really is looking great. Right now she looks a little bit stiff, i think she would be more relaxed, expecially if she's exposing herself like that :) It would be cool if her "robe" was more flowy especially at the bottom. I know you're probably not done yet, but it would be cool if it were trailing off behind her, or if it spread out on the ground like it was really really long, know what i mean? Anyway you've done a great job with this :)

Don't know if Tolkien would approve, but doubt you'll have to many complaints here!:D

Thanks, Dimitri ;)

Slot - I don't know about any tutorials... I kinda just cut paths along where I thought folds would go and went from there. :) Thanks!

Rye - Well, the idea was that she is in the middle of covering up... not flashing people. lol I do plan on adding more "flowy"-ness to her robe. :D Thanks!

Rhid1en - lol, thanks! ;)

Didn't really have a lot of time to work on her today, as I've been job-hunting and such. But I think the model is pretty much done for now. The hem of her robe isn't all that impressive, but my plan is to have her emerging from a pool of some sort, so you won't see that part of the robe in the final.

Also, I've had a couple complaints regarding the visible nipple, so I've "covered" it sorta. :p

Also, I made this belt-type thing... don't know if I'll keep it for now. What do you guys think?

I've also given her hips a slight shift to her right... gives her cooler stance, I think.

Thanks!

:bounce: wow...it's progressing very well!!!

the only thing i would touch is the belt on her behind...it should be higher and take the out shape of her cute little behind

lol

 :wavey:

azazel

I don't think this nipple-covering thing is necessary... looks bit off, and must be very uncomfortable to wear ;)

Belt should interact with robe more, otherwise - great.

mtmckinley
02-07-2003, 07:02 PM
thanks, Dimitri!

Azazel - Yes, I agree. What I think I might do is instead of a physical covering is "cover" it with bodypaint/tattoo... if the models in Sports Illustrated can get away with it, so can Ms. Midusae here. ;)

Thanks a lot, Virtuoso! :D

Thanks, Nurb'd. :D

A scene is in the plan, I just don't know if I'll have time for it in the challenge. I'm working on unwrapping her UVs right now... but I suppose I could make her scene, keeping her kinda "cartoony" shading for now. Do you guys think I should finish texturing her and then make her scene, or go ahead on the scene and risk running out of time to texture her properly? She'd look as she does now, except with better lighting (hopefully :p ).

My plan for the scene is a Dwarven-style cavern. :)

Thanks, guys!

Hello mtmckinley!! Nice modeling going on in here!! I'd say fully complete her, textures and all, then if you have time do a support scene...I'd really like to see her textured and completed!! :bounce: Keep up the good work!!

Thanks, Fetus. :)

Ok, I've been unwrapping UVs these past couple days when I had a chance. Still need to do her head and headsnakes' UVs. Anyway, here's a texture test I've done. I'm very open to suggestions. Unfortunately, I don't have a stylus or light pen or something, so I have to make textures with the mouse. Anyway, comments and suggestions are much appreciated. Eventually, the tatoo thing on her chest will end up being some kind of design that I haven't decided yet. lol

Thanks!

Well, I've been unwrapping this monster of a UV job... still going... slowly but surely. I'm getting less confident that i'll finish in time. :p

Her fingers look too thin. Maybe half again as thick? Or a quarter? They just stick out as being too small. To me anyway, don't know about others.

EDIT: Now that I look closer, I don't think they'd look right if they were thicker.

I like the fingers, but the hand needs (more) bumpmapping

A nice bit of specular on the hands where the scales are would rock. She still looks a bit tight. Just offer her a drink and a back massage:) I really like the body and would agree that she should have less clothing...or even more form fitting...keep going, you still have 7 days...about...."You can do it!"

Wow, thanks guys. :)

The UVs have been a monster of a headache, and I don't think I'm going to be able to finish it for the challenge if I continue as I am. I'll be sure to submit what I got at the end, though. Wish I was any good at texturing. :p

Rye
02-23-2003, 07:07 AM
woah! freaky hands there! I really hope you're able to finish this before the deadline. Wish I could do mine :( I can tell that you have improved a lot in a pretty short amount of time, she looks really good! If your texturing skills get as good as your modeling you'll be texturing circles around us in no time!

Rye - Thanks for the comments. :) I'm not going to get the entire project as I envisioned it done for the challenge, I don't think, but I hope to at least have the character done.

Boy, does this suck as much as I think it does? :p I still need to make a smooth transition between the snake scales and her skin for her head, but I thought I'd post what I got here...

Obviously still need to texture eyes, teeth, etc...

Small update. tweaked the shaders a bit. Just need to do eyes, teeth, belt, and I'd like to put some kinda design thingy on her veil. I might just forgo the tatoo on her chest and have be bare for now. ;)

Much better with the snake to head transition. I think the metals are way too shiny and perfect though. The headpiece just looks like its out of place. And darn....bare breasts...you'll have to make sure you take care of that....:surprised

mtmckinley
02-26-2003, 06:48 PM
Thanks for the comments, Rye. :) I'm afraid having a good 2 weeks away from her really hurt my progress, and I'm just gonna have to call this the final for now. I'd like to continue her later on my own, but we'll see what happens. :)
