one great thing about maya render layer is that once you create different render layers, you can go into each layer, and "create layer override" for different attributes, such as in attribute editor and render global.
however, there is a little bug in all the maya lights. you try to override "Emit Diffuse" and "Emit Specular" attributes, it wont let you override.

my current workaround is to save my scene in different versions. for example, one has only "Emit Diffuse" checked and one has only "Emit Specular" checked.

i am just pointing this out for ppl who didnt know about this, and just be aware when you run into related situations.

Hm. Interesting. Didn't know that.

There's a better workaround though. Instead of duplicating the scene, just duplicate the light.

Yes, that would be better workaround if your lights are linked as default which means lighting everything in the scene.
however, if i have specific lights linked to light specific objects in the scene, then duplicating them wont keep the same links anymore, they are lost. at least thats what i encountered.

too bad, i hope they can fix this in their next version.

It works if you switch on 'Instance Leaf Nodes' in the Duplicate options.

On a side note, is it just the Diffuse that you want to override? If it's the light that you wish to disable, you can just either remove the light from specific layers, or override the intensity.
