Anyone ever seen "Fishing" by PDI? How would I get a similar look from Maya?

Any ideas?

Here's PDI's page on the short:

And a small clip on AWN:

You may be able to get something like this by rendering with a Toon shader and then use After Effects to apply the Photoshop "Watercolor" filter, bu tI was wondering if there was a purely Maya solution. This kind of thing was all the rage a few years back.

I am pretty sure PDI used Maya in some capacity, but all the really cool effects came out of Shake or AFX (I think) and their specality coded plug-ins.
I'm sure they had an article in 3D World Magazine or something didn't they? It was a couple of years ago.

I'd recommend the TomCat Cartoon Shader available on highend, it allows you to use PaintFX brushes as your shaders, for example, the watercolour brush. Check it out.

I've played with Tomcat a bit and I really like the look I'm getting from it, but I could not get sequencial frames from it as the batch renderer did not work.

A little birdie told me that the batch renderer issues have been fixed and that the corrected version will be available for download on High End on Monday!!

I would suggest everyone grab this, because it really does some beautiful work.
