View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - Gandalf
Gandalf 01-11-2003, 12:49 AM This is the first time I take part to a CG contest, but how could I ignore a challenge on my favourite author?
I'm going to illustrate you on a Molthenyr (in elvish "Lumnasarn" Lumna = Ominous Sarn= Small Stone).
This creature's habitat is cold and rocky lands, as Misty ountains. They have very skinny figure, this carachteristic allows them to easily slip into holes and passages through stones, which is theyr primary food.
Asap I'll post the concept and the Molthenyr's background, history, attitude and relations.
That's all folks.:wavey:
GL to everybody.
Ps: I must regard my girlie for having helped me with the ideation of this creature.

Hey Gandalf, you certainly have the right name to be entering this contest :D
I love the fact that you have given your creature a proper Elvish name! Best of luck to you for this challenge, Gandalf

To Leigh: For me is appropiate to partecipate to this contest due to my name, but it's appropiate for you to partecipate due to your excellence. :)
here I leave my concept of Molthenyr. As you may see I immagine this creature very skinny, certainly not a nice guy to meet while climbing.

My next update will be centered on his background and hostory.

very nice, creepy character...:)
I was wondering if U could make his hands not with long thin fingers, but with long fingers with 'suckers' on the ends, kinda like gecko lizards feet....

Ok time for background:
The true story of Molthenyr
Here lays down carefully our legend, which looses herself through the wrinkles of time and the arabesques of ages.
Aula, Vala from whose hands, every construction found it's beginning, rock and metal his gifts used to adorn the world, desired to create intelligent beings to which he could teach his art.
Using stone and earth he moulded dwarves, tendering his knowledge. Ilúvatar at the presence of these new creatures, perturbed by the previous events, that all know how can let shadow fall on hearts and minds, reprehended him for desiring to dominate a race.
Aula, whose intent was pure and not ever touched by greed, as if a flame had crossed his head and blazed his sorrow, decided to destroy the dwarves that trembled in fear and begged for mercy.
Ilúvatar impressed from such intention and obstinate gloom, left free their lives, under the condition of a long and muffled silence of no remembrance, till the coming of the Elves, who should have been the first to awake, as foreseen in the original song.
As all know, the fate knows how to roleplay and the first to awake, for some fatal game made by time or by the enemy, Melkor, who never found rest, avid of redraft, didn't have the appearance and the craft of dwarves, and where known from that day on with the name of Molthenyr ( in elvish Lumnasarn ).
Comical creature These, tall no more than 130 cm, thin as spirits, consistent as stones which they eat ceaselessly. Following this path, originated this union between drawves and this race, one digging, the other eating, common particular the rocks, one pleasure seeking, the other ambition following.
Reserved and shy, ready lo slip in every hole and crevice to hide from discourteous eyes, untamable climbers with long limbs and lengthy fingers. Their color is taken from the nature, brownish earth which they use to mimetize, so quick as mindless. Unique occupation is their solitary lives, few growls and grunts and less thinking.
After the escape of dwarves from the mines of Moria, where they both lived and helped each other, in their own way, our Molthenyr ran off to Misty Mountains where they still work and eat, waiting, who knows, maybe for another cooperation.
That's all folks :wavey:

I love the idea of a rock-eating creature that co-existed with the dwarves. They must have been hordes of them to clear out those cavernous Halls of Moria!
I think a rock-eating creature would look differently, though.
It'd have to have massive jaws and diamond teeth, or perhaps some kind of bacteria-method of dissolving the stone. Just ideas, me likes!

Pigwater: I really appreciated what u wrote. My intent is truly to keep the work up to the concept. Hope it'll continue! :)
Dobermunk: Nice idea Dobermunk. I was thinking of teeth made up of unbreakable stones and pointed with diamond.
Anyway he's digestive system, is surely "alien" from ours. I bet there's some sulphidric acid in there. ;)
ECCO!!! vedi che hai le palle.....Guarda...si vede subito quando una cosa č fatta bene....e questa lo č davvero...
Good start m8!....with bumps, this model will be ROKInnKOOL!
I'm liking what I see so far.....keep it up Gandalf....the character has a very sinister(?) looking side to him....looking forward to seeing more.... :D

Oz: Ehehe thnx, spero tu abbia ragione... il bumps saran dolori, non so dove sbattere la testa per texturizzare in highpoly :)
Remi: Thanx Remi, he's sinister as u remark 'cause to his antisocial attitude. Anyway he's not cruel or bad, let's say he's indifferent to events of other races. :)
Virtuoso: Thnx m8, for the story I must thank my girlfriend that helped me out with english. I hope that Oz has explained what "vedi che hai le palle " means ;) ;)
Vertex: Thnx man :)

That's coming along nicely, Gandalf
The only crite I really have is that it's a bit plain and a bit symmetrical. Although the plainness can be fixed in the texturing stage :)
Keep going! :D

Leigh: Thnx, I think to made it less symmetrical with some morph targets later :)
Nadeemmar: Thnx :D

Nice look..................It's a style and feel that I personally care for. Right up my alley..............I am enjoying your progress Gandalf. Morph targets and texturing will really be fun to see later. Also the body is going to be fun to see grow. Fine work thus far.

OK for a brief thought.................I like the collar bone you have created very much. I already told you what I think of the rest thus far ( Very nice)........... I think I am getting a feeling that it's looking to go towards the very stylistic route.
In this case perhaps a narrow waist, extra narrow I think. Increased muscle definition, seperation etc,etc...
I think go for a more exxagerated look and feel.........It seems this praticular model you are creating is best suited for this. Longer, more elegant,a surreal type being, but with a fun toon aspect to it. Just my thoughts for now. Just another opinion for you,it could help some in the end.
:)
In time I will give my 2 cents on details, intricate ones, extras for that added beauty and flavor. Bumps, props, texture thoughts, and more. But until then I really like what you have done so far. See you soon..............:wavey:

Tnx Virtuoso, I appreciate all your comments they are always interesting.
I hope I understand what you mean (my english is bad :P)
Is something like this what you mean?
Magical modelling, and also, good background story, Gandalf.
BETTER AND BETTER!!!!

Here it's a rough base texture for the head, I'll add more definition with multimapping later.
