Alrighty! I'm rather new to the community so I was a bit scared of posting my rather infantile digital work, but I've recently started experimenting seriously with digital painting on an older image of mine and I was hoping I could get some tips on how to color skin, scratches, and odd skin colors. So far, Linda Bergkvist's tutorial on choosing skin colors and blending has been really useful!

But how on earth do I color pale blue skin? The Fae character in this piece has a sort of grey blue aqua skin and I'm not sure what accents would be good for the eyes and lips (you can see a color reference for the fae here: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/21030811/ ). I'm thinking purple maybe? I'm also open to any suggestions on improving the skin tone of the Elvish character already colored. Also, I'd like to know how to do really harsh shadows digitally since every time I try it, it looks more like the character hasn't shaved in months or has a dirty face:P

Any tips you guys can give me on layering things and other basic techniques would be much appreciated too! I'm rather new and still do not know the best way to order things.

Thanks for looking! I hope I can have some quality digital works in my gallery sometime soon:)

Hey there - Here's a few tips:

- you could colour the skin in natural skin tones, then just tweak them afterward in photoshop. OR -

- just choose a pallete of 3 colours to work with (dark tone, medium tone, light tone) all in the same colour (not lightness!) range. I just pointed a character with purple skin, seemed to work out allright. (see my thread)

- shadows...hmmm. Because I'm primarily a 3d artist, I really consider light when I work in 2d - I want it to represent the 3d model that it will eventually become! Sounds to me like you need to start thinking about your drawings as real 3d objects rather than 2d "drawings". For example, looking at the lighting on the guys face, there should be shadows on his face from his hair.

- If the cheeks look too dark, it's probably because the ARE, or you aren't using a consistent lighting solution in your drawing.

P.S. I think you should keep it up. This initial painted drawing looks way better than the other stuff on your website.

Oh Yeah! I just remembered, my icon goblin character has blue skin! I used black lips on him.

P.P.S. Keep each character on a seperate layer(s), when painting work from back to front.
