01-13-2003, 03:20 AM
So Dudes and Dudettes!
Here is my first Concept:
It is a CranŽyok.
This species is sized from about 10 centimeters up to 6 meters in lenght and hang from trees in dark woods where they are looking for little creatures to eat.
They are very shy creatures, but also dangerous when afraid. There tentacles are filled with some sort of nerve-poison, that even elfmagic couldnŽt heal.
Mostly they move from tree to tree with help of their tales, swingin like an ape but CranŽyoks are also very fast on the ground using their strong Arms and tentacles...
Some people say that they are semi-intelligent, but this was never improved.
So, whatch out for the CranŽyoks!!!
01-13-2003, 03:23 AM
01-13-2003, 03:43 AM
i have to agree with the "oh my god" part,
Tommy, why do you waste your talent on tatoos when you make comicstyled things like this?
Well not saying that tatooing is a waste... but damn!
01-13-2003, 03:52 AM
@Alice:Thanks,.. and I hope i could bring it to the industry. I love drawing,.. but here in Austria I look to strange to get some good Job! IŽll never give up tattooing because I love it. But my dream is to work as conceptartist or something.
May my dreams come true:sad:
01-13-2003, 04:00 AM
01-13-2003, 04:33 AM
01-13-2003, 04:59 AM
OOooooooOOooh wow!!!!!
01-13-2003, 07:51 AM
Exquisite drawing, its very dinamic and full of movement, and the design and background is great. It would be lovely to see in ROTK a bunch of these eating the face of Arwen. Ohhhh yeah.
01-13-2003, 01:23 PM
Thanks, thanks, thanks dudes and dudettes!!!!
@Pancy: a big LOL!!!!!:D
update coming soon...
01-13-2003, 03:31 PM
Nice one there Tommy :)
About that 'looking to weird for a job-part', come to holland :P no1 looks to weird for a job here :D
01-13-2003, 04:20 PM
Hehe ReinS... I know that. Thanks for ya comment....
Here is the next step: finished rough shading...now on to the fine-shading-braincracking-shading-thingy...LOL!!!!:D
01-13-2003, 05:39 PM
looking good as always Tommy :applause:
You're the only guy I like for giving me nightmares :)
01-13-2003, 06:29 PM
Thanks Styggy!
01-13-2003, 06:44 PM
looking very deadly!
no thumb on it's left hand?
01-13-2003, 06:49 PM
It seems more an aquatic creature than a tree-dweller but it looks like something I definitely wouod rather not encounter.
Looking forward to more!
01-13-2003, 07:00 PM
Don't know why it reminds me Ripley;)
Deadly great job, Tommy...
01-13-2003, 07:32 PM
Thumb is coming up too...hehe...thx Slacker!
Another little update...
 U ARE .....GOOOOOOOSH.......U are amazing.....!!!! .........ROK ON!!!
01-13-2003, 09:17 PM
That looks quite good, Tommy!
Although I have to admit, I don't really see that creature living in Tolkien's Middle Earth, it's a little bit too 'alien-esque' for that. ;)
01-13-2003, 09:36 PM
Cool, Tommy, real cool. You do know you got a month on this right?! lol.
01-13-2003, 10:45 PM
@Culann: Thanks man! But this is my style and I donŽt wanna copy tolkien or something outa the concepts of the movie. But btw... whats about the creature in LOTR part 1, that lives in the waters near the doors of Moria???:hmm:
@Gamoron: I know, I know... but maybe IŽll do a second one too...hehe. Thanks buddy!!!!
Btw,.. here is the next update: Finished fineshading,.. next steps:
Highlights and color.
01-14-2003, 12:28 AM
Goddamn Tommy! You ever do any sucky work? Nice to see you gettin' your arse in gear again
01-14-2003, 12:38 AM
I'ld say he looks like he lives along a rocky river side. Uses tail and hands and tenticales to slither up and down the rocky bank to feed on various animals (coming to drink) and fish in the river.
Scary all the same though.
01-14-2003, 01:09 AM
Thanks Obudtaig and corndog!!!:D
Next update.. finished the rough coloring... next step:
01-14-2003, 02:57 AM
Nextone: Finecolored... next step: finetuning!
01-14-2003, 02:59 AM
And a closeup...
01-14-2003, 03:51 AM
Last update for today...started finetuning. Here is a closeup in nearly original size, what iŽve got so far....
01-14-2003, 04:44 AM
tommy i love your work.. plain and simple, but you know this!
01-14-2003, 08:19 AM
creeeepy!!!:argh: :xtreme: ....the only crit. is i think you need to rough up his teeth a tad...cos right now he looks like he has some decent dental hygiene.
Slow down there chief ...
I'd hate to think you do everything this quickly. You'd be running on 2 hours sleep, have bad indigestion from your last meal and the ladies would all be dissappointed. :D
The pic looks fookin' awesome as usual! Can't wait to see what you do for a background.
01-14-2003, 04:01 PM
@scello: look at nature. Lions, cougars, bears and so on have blankwhith teeth. So why my CranŽyok shouldnŽt..hehe. IŽll think about it and thanks for the comment.
@Kirt:LOL!!!!! Thanks buddy... ya know me!:D
Here is the next update btw... finetuning is nearly finished:
01-14-2003, 04:04 PM
Damn! You have TIME! (me jealous)
Looking very juicy!
01-14-2003, 04:10 PM
Sheesh Tommy! I mean , sheesh. I've barely started. Looking awesome man, hopefully the bg will slow you down. I'd have to say I kinda agree about the teeth. maybe a darker yellow up by the gums, to be like tartar or something like that. Looking awesome. I'm starting to think you might be influenced by Giger. Is this true? You got that mastic or whatever its called look down dude!
I finally got it figured out ...
Tommy has been giving out 3 thumbs up to several people in the 2D forum (   ). So, I've deduced that he has had another arm sugically attached (or it's a birth mutation). Makes sense to me - right?
Great job ! And you're working faaaast ! Keep it up, it's completely awesome!  :applause:
01-14-2003, 07:06 PM
Good stuff Tommy. At this pace youll be able to do 2 or 3
Kirt- I have had several discussions with people about how the artist in Europe and Asia seem to have no day night cycle. They're always working!!!
01-14-2003, 08:47 PM
Yeah cleptocat, we don't have night cycle lol!
Hey buddy, impressive work again Tommy Lee! Looks good so far!
Keep goin' on it, really cool design!
A background "by night" maybe (for more mood...and nightmares) ? ;)
(ps: That's a really cool challenge btw...I got too much work to do...so I may not go on it ... ...too bad that Jeroentje isn't here too I wish he will join the fun soon... anyways, keep going dudes!)
01-14-2003, 08:54 PM
@doermunk: Must sleep...damn coffein...DOH!!:eek:
Thanks for the comment!!!:D
@Gamoron: Yeah ya both right, bout the thees.. will add some more ugly yellow!!!! And I am not influenced by giger. I like some of his works, but thats it. thanks dude:beer:
@Kirt: Damn man...who tells ya!!!:annoyed: hehe..cheeeeeeeerz:beer:
@Baal:To fast for some in here..hehe...anyway. Thanks!
@cleptocat: I mostly work at night. Thats the the time I am most inspired. And I dont think IŽll make 3,.. but maybe 2:D :D
Thank ya all
There is something wrong with it.
Last night it came in to my dream. Yes, it was hitchhiking when i went to work and coz it looked so lonely and friedly i picked it up.
It told me it war coming from octoberfest but overslept it's stop so it's hitchiking to home coz it don't have any money. I gave it few euros and dropped it off to gasstation nearby my work. It was very polite all the time and i hope it used those few euros to coffee an sandwich, not boose.
Anyway great work Tommy dude
01-14-2003, 09:06 PM

@Gamoron:It is not so large..wait for the background;)
Cheerz dudes and dudettes
01-15-2003, 08:24 PM
Tommy, your creations are so good, this one in particular, I find it hard to believe that you don't use some sort of arcane magick to conjure beings from some sort of alternate plane of existance and trap them in a still image. This one is simply wonderful. I can't wait to see the finished product.
01-16-2003, 04:23 AM
Constant V's DAMMNIT TOMMY! Constant V's on that monster... here let me improve it for you *pulls out the lighter* :wip:
01-16-2003, 09:26 AM

The last pic is just a closeup to see the beginning coloring of the victim.
01-16-2003, 04:07 PM
Dzjeezus Tommy! This is one of the best things I've seen from you!
I wish I could find the time to join the fun, lucky enough we have some more time this challenge, so just maybe... :)
(btw, give the "victim" some orange hair, to set it off against the monster, that will bring some depth in it ;) )
01-16-2003, 04:59 PM
If i get a copy of this pic in a deasent resulution when you are finished with it, i promise you i will hang it over my bed :D
01-16-2003, 05:59 PM
:surprised wouldn't that image keep you awake whole night Alice?
01-16-2003, 07:53 PM
@Jeroen: Thanks buddy. And I thought about the hairthingies too, but I didnŽt come to a cool color. Maybe I was very tired.
And I also think, this will be my masterpiece since I lost 80% of my work 2 years ago.
Thanks for ya comment and the Hairtip:beer:
Btw... We will see us in Copenhagen. I am coming for sure!!!!!
Hope to see some of ya all.
@Alice: Ya will get a print. What a compliment!!!! About the resolution... Now its about 3000 pixels high and 3500 pixels wide with a resolution of 300 dpi. Thats enough...huh?
@CGFreak: First thanks for ya comment. About the tablet: I work with a Wacom Graphire 1 (Intuos 1) with A6 workspace. I love to work small like that. If ya buy one, get ya the Intuos 1 or 2. The Intuos 2 is more precise. Just buy a tablet from WACOM. They have the best support and work perfect with nearly every Graphic Application.
Hope this helps a bit. Laterz dude!!!
Thanks again and till the next update...
01-16-2003, 08:20 PM
Holy crap this soooooo cool, Tommy Lee :applause: :applause:
That's such an awesome pic!!!!

Sure, I'll probably recognize you from across the whole festival: you're the guy with the tattoo on his face, the knife in his hand and the blood on his shirt, that's walking in a sphere of silence because of all the people staying at a distance.
I'll be that guy wondering what the hell he is doing, being a 2D guy in a room full of poly-people (Ah! Looking for Tommy Lee and the nearest bar ofcourse. Although I have this silly idea I can find both at the same place ;) )...
01-16-2003, 10:08 PM
@Jeroen: LOL!!!...WeŽll see us there:twisted:
And here is a little update on the Vyctheem(hehe found a name)...
01-17-2003, 01:51 AM
not drawing this time
two thumbs for ya
Ps - maybe three if you clean your jpg files from all this crap of compression
01-17-2003, 10:48 AM
ey bruz, its that compressed to be able to attach the pictures, he did mention the resulution he worked in before ;)
01-17-2003, 12:45 PM
Yeah,.. the atachment size is reduced now to 30Kb...
I started to sketch out the forground...
01-17-2003, 01:21 PM
It's gonna be another awesome work dude! I'm at school but I can't resist to tell u what I think!!!
C u later!
01-17-2003, 02:02 PM
Man, you've got all kinds of craziness going on here!
01-17-2003, 02:22 PM
this skecth is so fine
Drawing it in blue could be seem a Walt Disney skecth for a scene
01-18-2003, 04:16 AM
:applause:
01-18-2003, 03:19 PM
What he said
01-18-2003, 03:43 PM
That background is awesome:applause: Can't wait to see it colored:beer:
01-18-2003, 04:36 PM
this background will be funny to paint
I will keep a eye on it...
very very beatiful compositision
01-18-2003, 05:51 PM
Thanks for ya kind comments, but IŽll start a new one. I let the image rest 2 days, and now I donŽt like it that much. It have to be better,... different. Hmmmmmmmmm.... I will start to scribble again. Update coming soon.
01-18-2003, 10:38 PM
So... here is the sketch of my new creation. I made it mor tolkiesh...
ItŽs a Tocriel on a Swampstilter.
The Tocriels are a race wich were extincted long befor humans appeard on the continents of middleearth. They were Hunters and slave traders.Their "booty" was sold mostly to the great Lords of Moria.
Tocriels had a patriachalic system so the female members of their race were also slaves in some way... (also sold sometimes for the dirty buisness inthe darker areas of a town.)
They could be found in nearly every swamp of middleearth, living in houses built on the gigantic branches of the Meghocry trees.
For the hunt and traveling they use the SWAMPSTILTERS. Very fast creatures. They could reach the speed of a jaguar and were able to cross every terrain. They extincted at the same time as the Mocriels.
Nobody knows why?
01-18-2003, 10:41 PM
01-19-2003, 03:13 AM
Here is an update,... Composition is ready:
01-19-2003, 03:14 AM
And a closeup of the 2nd Tocriel:
01-19-2003, 04:42 AM
01-19-2003, 04:54 AM
Great scene... I've been looking at it for the last ten minutes trying to find something to crit for you, but I can't. You could put more detail in the background, but I'm sure you've planned for that already. Really great work.
Are you just abandoning your first attempt? I don't think you should...it was really great, also! Another great piece for your portfolio, if you finish it!
Looking forward to the coloring stages:beer:
01-19-2003, 04:57 AM
For sure will come more in the Background. This is just the forground and Mid. Background and FX are coming at last.
The other piece I will let rest a while... IŽll finish it for sure sometimes.
01-19-2003, 07:19 AM
Dude, the designs are rocking. Go go go!
01-19-2003, 08:10 AM
GReat colors man!!
please post more "in progress" stuff...
your work rocks!
01-19-2003, 05:16 PM
WTF! Damn Tommy you move to fast, you got to make the morning last... D'oh! Anyways... Awesome man. I think this is on higher level then the previous one. Great concept. And I see you're moving in a new direction with your colouring, no black and white underpainting. Cool!:applause:
01-19-2003, 07:25 PM
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH...GODDAMN...IŽve another one. I started to play around in Painter,... and now I know IŽll do this.
So here is my final concept. DonŽt know where it ends...
Its also about the Tocriels(Same story as befor)
LOL! Someone has too much free time on his hands. :D
Tommy quit your teasing and stick to one idea. They all rock, but my favorite so far is the second one.
01-19-2003, 11:41 PM
Hey Kirt ya right. The 2nd one is also my favorite. I reworked it.
Made the head of the swampstilter different and also added a little creature called Moghriiin. ItŽs a scout for the Mocriel. They are damn fast and absolutly silent.
Here we go...sketch:
01-19-2003, 11:43 PM
Here is a closeup of the little Moghriiin-dude:
01-20-2003, 03:15 AM
01-20-2003, 06:20 PM
Here is the background-concept:
01-20-2003, 07:41 PM
I like this way of putting skecthes on the thread like films' storyboard.
Also the blue line are great.
Tommy why don't you use a web space to put yuor images? At the end they would seem more clear
01-20-2003, 09:30 PM
NICE! REAL NICE!:buttrock:
u are a monster!!!
ROCK OVER!! MAN U ROX! GReAt!:bounce: :applause:
01-21-2003, 01:19 AM
Here is an update on the background:
01-21-2003, 01:20 AM
...and a closeup:
01-21-2003, 01:25 AM
This side view gives an "Oddworld" flavor (Playstation... now X-box...argh!) to your concept ( your beast reminds me those "scrubs" in the game too) .
And yeah, all your drawin' are mostly goin' to the left...you're right-handed! :D
Cheers buddy and good luck again!
01-21-2003, 02:21 AM
Man, I really like were you are going with this, such attention to details!
I liked the first monster design though but we'll see how far you can push this...keep on going
01-21-2003, 02:23 AM
Thanks Arty and Royal:beer:
Here is a large image of the final composition:
01-21-2003, 03:10 AM
Go on! :wip:
01-21-2003, 06:44 AM
:surprised s**t dude!!! you friggin rock:xtreme: :surprised
01-21-2003, 07:53 AM
think we have a winner here
hope to get some extra time to finish mine so as to keep myself on the competition.
Great drawings man
why didn't you begin painting shadows with blue in spite of black?
4 thumbs this time (doing nothing this time)

01-21-2003, 12:25 PM
You have surpassed yourself this time, fantastic concept, if only someone was modelling.
01-21-2003, 07:47 PM
@Bruzun: What kind of mutant are u???4 thumbs...hehe. Thanks dude!
@Vertex: Thanks man. It would be cool if someone would model this. So everybody who reads this: Feel free to model this scene, ya all have my permission.
I started coloring(Basiccolors):
01-21-2003, 09:05 PM
crap. That's awesome Tommy.
01-21-2003, 10:24 PM
I am not really liking the coloring on this one. not becoz it is bad, but it does not seem as a Tommy Lee's
01-21-2003, 10:30 PM
I think Tommy is trying something new Alevice.
Good for you Tommy Lee, always keep your style in motion
01-21-2003, 10:51 PM
@Alvelice: This are just the basic-colors.. final coloring ya can see on the little critter. He is the reference for the whole lightning. No panic,... anyway it will be a Tommy Lee- Original..lol:beer:
@Jeroen: It will be just a bit different. The most difference will be the way IŽll come to the endresult. I am not sure whats coming out!hehe! Its an experiment.WeŽll see...
@Gamoron::blush:... you too dude and ya know that!!!!
Update coming soon, when I finished the basiccolors on the first layer.
01-21-2003, 11:32 PM
01-21-2003, 11:39 PM
01-21-2003, 11:42 PM
No worries. You are the cool bob, no matter what you do (well only except if you leave to do your stuff).
01-22-2003, 06:12 AM
tommy are you a super hero? :buttrock:
01-22-2003, 06:12 AM
Well... thats a really nice compliment. Thank you Alevice:wavey:
01-22-2003, 10:16 AM
a little update:
01-22-2003, 10:51 AM
Woah, so many new concepts! where are you getting the time from? are you stealing from us? Urgh todayŽs wednesday!! where is my tuesday?? :D
Great drawings, i like the final composition, the beast design and the little creature on his head  . IŽm not sure about the colors, reds, blues and greens toghether, but you are Mr. Wendtner and iŽve got clean underpants, so i dont worry at all.
01-22-2003, 11:04 AM
Surrealistic beauty.Wonderful art Tommy Lee.......It's vibrant and totally full of life.I just would like to see that bad arse beast run wild in the streets of Beautiful Vienna.............As long as there would be no damage I think that would really be freaky.;)

I love it dude! Cool Lightwork! Maybe u got a too high contrast on the "Tocriel & Swampstilter" of the foreground...but I can't wait to see the final result mate!!
Keep it goin'! :buttrock:
Looking good Tommy!
I don't know if you're onto the forground creature still or it's done ... but I thought I'd point this out anyway. There is a white halo around the creature which I'm assuming is from copy and paste in photoshop? If it's intentional, I'd get rid of it and use hightlights and shadows to separate the creature from the background.
The legs to our right don't look like they're shaded enough either. Compare the shadows there to the shadows on the side of the creature's face.
I'm sure you're probably still working on it ... but that's my critique for now just in case you missed it. :D
01-23-2003, 06:19 AM
tommy you sure your not a super hero?:curious:
Very nice, as always :) :applause:
01-23-2003, 11:31 AM
Me thanks for comments and crits!!!
@Arty: I think the contrast isnŽt enough! Kirt pointed this out in his reply. Anyway...This pic is maybe 70%finished...so things will change. Thank ya:beer:
@Kirt: All ya said are the things I planned for finishing..hehe...thanks dude. Very nice critique. I like it when people look closley on my images. Thank ya Kirtydude:beer:
@Mangeled Poly: hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...still not!:beer: :D
@tmt: Thank ya very much dude:beer:
01-23-2003, 08:50 PM
Update. Nearly finished...added DOF, cleaned up the Forground, made shadowcorrections and added some details....
01-23-2003, 09:01 PM
I add it with the blur tool in photoshop..going from the right to the left and down with less and less and less... opacity. The top-layer stays sharp. And the things that are very far away i blur again...thats it.
Hope this helps a bit dude:wavey:
01-23-2003, 09:16 PM
SWEET! :xtreme: :scream: Looking fantaastic Tommy.
Much better! Now you just need to add a bit of that green glow on the forground critters. Not much because they're in the sunlight more than the one in the background. Maybe just on the areas closest to the power stone (or whatever you call that).
The plants you have growing around the rocks ... I forget what they're called (I call them corndogs) ... I think they grow primarily around water sources. You should probably change them so they're not identifiable as 'corndogs'.
And lastly, I think you should add a touch of that blue from the background rocks into the shadow areas of the foreground rocks. Chances are that the rocks are of the same type and should reflect the light simularly. On the top peaks of the background rocks they should reflect the orangish color of the foreground ones. Does that make sense?
I dunno ... I'm working too much lately I don't make sense to myself anymore.

@CGFreak: No prob man.
@Kirt:Thanks Kirt!Really good points ya told here. I was sitting to long on that image in one piece. IŽll do another doddle over the weekend to get distance of this one to finish it correctly.
Thank ya very much Kirt. You pointed really out the last prob.

Amazing simply amazing, that image looks so cool.
I have only one major crit, you seem to have overlooked the other 200 frames of animation where they march across the screen. (hehe..)
01-24-2003, 05:32 PM

01-25-2003, 12:30 AM
Very, very cool! You can definately feel some of your "new school" tattoo influences in your work! I really like your style a lot. I'm working in the game industry right now and am considering moving towards the tattoo industry myself.... I know this is a CG forum, but do you have any examples of your skin/ink work on the web to check out?
You definately inspire me to continue in the cg realm myself once I get going; thanks! Maybe I'll take a break from some of the flash I'm working on to join in the 3d challenge
01-26-2003, 11:08 AM

02-06-2003, 10:38 AM
Ya Pics are very nice. I have to say ya really learn fast. Ya skillz went higher from pic to pic. I will take one Pic and overpaint it to show ya what to improve, because its hard for me to explain in english technically. IŽll send ya that next week, because right now IŽve no time.
Laterz buddy and keep working
02-13-2003, 01:35 AM
wohooooo! looking great Tommy, as expected! :D
I like how you're managing the composition and the mood.
Only one thing. There seems to be a contrast between the creatures on the right and the background and the other creatures. Maybe this is because of the blur only, but it looks like if both parts had been done with different techniques, the creatures don't fit perfectly into the background or vice-versa.
Just a thought from a color-blind 2D newbie, so better pay no attention to that!
02-13-2003, 04:19 PM
