View Full Version : Races Of The Middle Earth - Character - Ila Solomon
ilasolomon 01-11-2003, 12:00 AM Let see what I have...
This is an old sketch, but still I like it & wanted to model it since.
I think they didn't have something like this before in middle earth, It has been taken from Persian mythology (that inspired western mythology much)

LOL! :D thanx swag & KingMob, but actually she is he (though he has big breasts!)
ok, some info:
Great White Deev: the biggest & most dangerous creature in north side of Alborz mountains, one of the few Deevs races with medium IQ & big stomach, they live alone, in deep rain forest of Alborz in thier dark caves...they are man-eater (cannibal) & are almost twice a normal human in size, plus a pair of big sheep-horn on head & light-yellow, soft, spotted skin.
thier weapons are mainly thick tree sticks & stones. this race don't build tools & stuff, neither use sword or bow.
they can talk in their language or human language both, have a normal sight but great smelling & hearing senses, just like dogs.
they have little magical abilities naturally, but don't use much.
(there are more kind of Deev, like Black Deevs & Flying Deevs, but that's another story)

Amazing sketch!!!
I like all in that picture except the face! But it's only a taste! The draw is perfect! I imagine a more massive face, and maybe more angry and dreary! but it's fine like that too!

Nice. The head looks a little larger in the side view, I like that. Dont make it too small.
Have you decided on the size of his hands? They look to tiny in these latest drawings.
Interesting with that massive tail. Would be nice to see some other angles on it.
So promising this one, really looking forward to the 3D.

well, I'm not sure, but it was my first try with WINGS3D, & I could say that it's a very easy to use & powerful app. I'm still faster in MAX & I like the way that MAX works more, but WINGS3D could be an option, yes, of course it could be, it loads very fast, has some VERY GOOD features (collapse, desolve & connect are great!) & it quits faster!. maybe in future I replace it for just poly-modeling. (I see a bright future for Wings3D)
I recommend to use it at least once.
(aha, I saw that MAYA 4.5 has so many new good features in modeling & manipulating...I didn't try that yet, maybe for next part of my DEEV's body! does MAYA 4.5 PE save/export mesh? ;) )

Yes Ila............I love the fact that now I can use both Maya and Max back and forth. The advantages in using both are astronomical. It is a pure bliss for me, I am now able to actually fullfill my visions due to it. With both packages I feel all limitations are gone. Here is a link to a converter that works for both packages..................
http://www.kaydara.com/partners/sdk/fbx/index.php
Hope I was of some help.I think you should consider this option. It for me does not get any better than this, both top high end packages at once, pure heaven.............

fellah
01-20-2003, 11:43 PM
not bad ila, but not perfect(yet) either, imo. I made a little pic to show you some areas that I think you can improve,
Click for image (http://www.fellah.net/temp/RoME/body_poly_03_smooth(2).jpg)
I also think the muscles are to pronounced, it looks like a creature with very big muscles, and _very tight_ skin overlapping them without any "fat" at all between! I think you should smooth the muscles out some to make it look more organic.
I'm just pointing these things out to help you as I'm sure you know ila, nothing you have to care for if you don't want to/like the ideas.
take care

Frinsklen
01-23-2003, 01:59 PM
Yes, great modelling, as usual.
I think all those cool muscles make your creature look too human.
After seeing those sketches, I thought your character would look a bit more like a fat troll or something, with thicker arms, more rough, not so detailed. Of course you can add as much detail as you want, but I see human arms when I look at those...
Just an idea, of coursem it's coming along as nicely as we know it would.
Keep modelling...
:bounce:
ilasolomon
01-23-2003, 02:03 PM

great work man!
Virtuoso
01-24-2003, 12:23 AM
The sculpting is coming along fine, very fine Ila.
I think the stomach will get more vertical size when Ila extends the stomach and modeling down from this point King Mob,at least that's my thoughts.
I think it's going to be wonderful when finished, and do the sketch great justice.I would like to see the head have a little more size, but with the up-coming horns i think that will add size enough.
Looking very nice already Ila,keep up the usual fine work.

01-24-2003, 09:59 AM
Good progress. But dont he look to muscular right now? I really liked the fat on your sketch. The strong build and heavy muscles were visible underneath, but were covered in a great layer of fat.
Especially his breasts should get that hanging feeling.
His face looked more bulgy in the sketch (wich I liked) but there are to many planar surfaces in the model right now.
Harsh and direct only to give you that extra push towards greatness.
:wip: :wavey:
ilasolomon
01-24-2003, 12:59 PM

Nice going Ila
But I had some thoughts, You're straying a bit from the original concept.
For instance:
On the sketch the back of his neck had alot more mass. And makes his head stand more in front of his body/neck instead of ontop, like the modelled version.
And his lips are a bit to thin, almost humanlike. On the sketch, his lower lip was really thick, and his upper lip was almost... well, not human at all, it gives the original face another impression than the "new" one.
His mouth was "sticking out" more alltogether really. The modelled face looks really like a fat human.
Hope it helps :)
have fun!

oh Yeah, the lips need more works, indeed...they are still in progress. I'll do.
& about the back of the head/neck, I'll see what can I do about that...I'm far from the original sketch, but don't care!...I always change things for 3d version.
Thank You :)
Ila
hm like the sketch or not.. i woudlnt want that guy to sit on me!

good to see you working on the challenge again ila :) a little crit from my side would be the deltoids, they look a little short. might look better if you made them a little longer.
much better muscles now though

Nice. He's more interesting in 3d than I was expecting, based on your sketch. Although those striations on the outside of his chest don't look very natural at all to me.

My Dear Anders, comments from you always are welcome, (that "more fats, less muscles" are because of you :) )

Wow :buttrock:

I like where u are going with your character ...so much power in his appearance....Great muscle structure on his body...will u make veins on his muscles too? :bounce: :bounce:
...and will the spots be on his final texturing dominant element?:bounce:

My Dear Ila, I hope this helps too.
only 2 things:
- now I find the mouth too human, and I think it is because of the shape of the lips. (specially in the picture before the last one). Try giving it a wilder shape... think of orcs trolls... :)
- in the front view I've noticed something like a hunch... I'm not sure if that's part of the head or if he's actually a hunchback. Anyways, that looks strange. Can you post a side view?
He looks so agressive... I can't wait to see the whole thing.

Dimitri, I'd like to add veins, I give it a try, & yes those spots are one of his skin's charastrictics. but now they are very raw & just for demo.

hey man, looks great (love the horns btw, brilliant way of doing them)
If i might make 1 suggestion, why not shrink the head down or make the bdoy bigger? I think that woulld really add to his size! right now his head feels to big imo...
great work tho man, your sketch was breathtaking to! definetly a nice bit of modeling here! can't wait to see full texture...and hands...tho stumps are interesting to :)

:)
a few reasons:
I was busy with two other projects (Kirt's alien & mine!) & a commercial ad too.
I was tierd of that ... & ...
I was not happy with that!
I'll finish it another time. ;)
cheers, see you next challenge.
Too bad, was hoping to see this thing finished, maybe next challenge you can do both 2d and 3d, you have some great work, especially liked your interview by CGTALK, great stuff, good luck with this challenge and maybe see you in the next!

still one of my favorites, and I really love the name.
Are you planning on finishing soon? because really this is one of the coolest characters. ALso the horn "tutorial" you put is the first way I have read to make good horns of any shape...SO not only a keen character but I learned something!
Sorry you couldn't finish this time...life has a way of doing that sometimes :(
