View Full Version : Gods/Demons - Character - Sangotten
Sangotten 03-11-2002, 07:01 PM This is my personal God and Demon....Nefriath.
Little background info about him....(or should I say "it")
Nefriath was the great ruler of a small group of large Islands on the planet Nepustia. The whole planet was filled with war, and it seemed that for the next centuries to come it would stay that way. The kingdom of Nefriath (called Illemp) was one of the strongest and won more battles every day, due to the great warmachines it produced. But one day the enemy launched a big attack on Illemp and destroyed most of the warmachine factories. Illemp had become very weak and was losing fast, Nefriath was becomming frustated and wanted to find a way to destroy the enemy and rule the world fast.
One night after another big battle lost Nefriath came home to rest but he found a old scroll in his room. He read out loud what was written on it and just when he finished his whife and doughter ran in the room, chased by assassins. In front of the eyes of Nefriath they where killed, and then he was killed him self.
Left for dead Nefriath stood up and he noticed his whife and doughter butchered on the floor. Insane with madness a force inside him broke loose, a large lighting ball filled the room and slowly began to grow and swallowed everything in it's way. With a bang it devoured the planet Nepustia, and after that the sun.
Nefriath was still standing, standing in an empty space with only a small planet (Altion) left in his solar system and a dark sun. He thought about that planet and all of a sudden he was there, on the planet. The inhabitants of that planet had withnessed the big event up in the sky. As Nefriath showed his self to the people of Altion he was feared and worshipped as a god. He had become a god or a demon if he wanted to...Immortal, Powerfull and filled with grief....

For now I what to make him in 2D, fist his head and later (if enough time) I would like to make a him in an enviroment (also in 2D, because my modeling skills suck!). Im not so sure about the colors so please crit & comment!

Very nice design, Great background on the demon, Is he a good or a bad demon, he looks very cool..
I really do like the colors, they have a good contrast, maybe you could add 2 vials of blood from his wife and child, to wear around his neck.... :)

hmm, nice scetch - are you going to make a complete model or do you focus on the head?
Sangotten
03-11-2002, 09:07 PM
Thanx for your comments so far,
MichaelHebel: For ow I focus on the head, that's enough work for now.
Hmura: Cool you like it, He has become a God but he acts sometimes like a a demon, depends on the situation. About those 2 vails, I think it's a good idea, so now the two jewels on his head will be red like blood.
I've been working the whole day on this so here's an update. I'm trying some kind of differnet painting style so it may look a bit rough...:wip:

Very impressive! I really like your character so far, hes got a truly imposing look to him. (Evil or good)

Wow, i like the face very much, very stylized, the skin it´s cool, like a mask.. and good background too! He should be a demon, not one of those soppy gods... :p

Really strong looking face - too sad that we will never see him in 3D :hmm: ! I think it would be a huge challenge to model this head.
But i think it will be a nice artwork - keep it up !!

cool concept!!......will be cool in 3d
Sangotten
03-12-2002, 04:14 PM
Thanx people!
A quick up-date!
I agree to all who say that he may look cool in 3D and Skello offered to model him in 3D. For me it would take to long so Skello can go and fix him in 3D!
As for my work, it goes allright but I think the light blue on the front of his head (beginning of the upper horn) is not right and the gold and red jewel feel out of place... tell me what you think so I can change it!

lookin' great, be sure to finish it!:p
looks great. my only suggestion is not making the ear as bold as it is colorwise. seems odd to me. Maybe make it a very light skin? It really stands out in the blueish thing you got going there.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOIE
God Damn! holy macarony of St Luisiana!!!
NOW this is GOOD stuff, if u can make that dude 3D as good as he looks 2D, then I ain't got sh!t to say.
GREAT colours dude!

Hmmm, maybe you could give him some fine patterns like tattoos over the white areas of his skull, or parts of them. It would add some nice extra detail to him.
I'll try to attach a sketch to show you what I'm trying to say.
Sorry I ruined you nice picture doing so...

Allright I need to work harder....that's for sure.
davi> Thanks for your suggestion! I think you're right about skin color...maybe a bit lighter...I'll try!
bibi5000> Hmmm I was thinking about adding more detail later but what you did looks cool too! I think I go for a little bit more subtile solution..if you don't mind ;)

That looks real KICK-ASS!!
Man, you gotta do something about your modeling skills. It's a shame u can't make hime in 3D. I'm sure that it would look fantastic. But don't worry this 2D Drawing is also great!!!
I wanna c more! I wanna c more! I wanna c more!
I wanna c more! I wanna c more! I wanna c more!
I wanna c more! I wanna c more! I wanna c more!

Thanks CHRiTTeR! and dutch you're right...no gold and red....
Since the rules of the contest changed for 2D I will finish it but I cannot make a official entry!!!
So here is a linework...a fast one just to give you guys a front view (sorry skello, I don't hope it will mess up your model...:( ).
Not far as impresive as what I had in mind for my other piece....
but I'll continue!!!:buttrock:

Heeeey! I love the depht blur effect!
System404
03-14-2002, 07:28 PM
great stuff man, like the character. my only problem is with the front view, it seems like he's missing the top part of his head and when compared to his side one can see the disproportion
can't wait to see the rest of him
Sangotten
03-14-2002, 08:05 PM
So here's another update!
System404> Thanks man, I see your point...and yes I was a bit sloppy about that, it was just a quick one so when I work him out I'll try to keep the disproportion in mind! By the way...where's your entry? I dying to see what you spin off! :buttrock:
Okay now the head is "allmost" finished, I just need to work out the body... Because of the rule of no texturing the head is allmost as far my detail work will go....It's a shame, I know!
I will try to continiue my project in line-work, I'm going to make scenes from his background story....
I'll be back soon!
Batmanuel
03-14-2002, 10:09 PM
Looks Great!! I think it was a good decision to stick with the blue feel throughout the head. The backgrounds will be nice to see also.
Keep chugging...

03-14-2002, 10:28 PM
wow :) i like more the "profile" version :) really a good stuff man
I really dont think you have to worry about changing anything on your 2d piece. its coming out great, the rules state that for 2d artists, your not allowed to use mattes or things from photos, etc. but if its all hand made through like photoshop, your fine. If you want a background to go with the 2d piece, I think you must put down character/ environment, but this challenge is not suppose to limit you in any way possible. Your best bet is to email one of the mods to make a final judgement on what to do, but dont stop now, color is always better then black and white, why hold back for ill be doing a 2d piece and a 3d model... Hope this helps!

DAmn!!! you guys are pushing me!
Okay since I have some spare time I'll try to model it! But beware I suck at it so.....don't expect much. Skello said he would model it but I haven't heard from him in a while...so here goes nothing.:wip:
The picture below is from a previous model I made...never got to finish it by the way...But you can see how bad I am if I can't texture!

Hey G.
Looks like an extruded line with meshsmooth. That will never give a smooth result. You should boxmodel the mask too, meshsmooth works best on evenly divided 4 sides polys (this line is just one 300 sided polygon!. i'll show you tonight:)

Sorry for pushing u to tha 3D.
U said u suck in 3D. Well, you're verry wrong!! I suck in 3D!!! . You just need to experiment more and have some more experience in 3D. By telling yourself u suck and stop trying you'll never get there. You're 3D is really good, it's just that the experience is missing.
If u think u can do better in 2D then do it in 2D! But u can also keep on doing the 3D version if u have some spare time. Then u'll see that the next model u will make will be much better and easier to model.
Still wanna see more!! 2D or 3D, doesn't mather. They both got they charmes!
:) :) :)

03-16-2002, 02:35 AM
ok, man, you absolutely and positively ROCK!!!! your drawings are VERY nice, and the idea TRAVELS TO HEAVEN AND RIGHT BACK TO EARTH. it is simply AMAZING! Now, for business. I also suck in 3D (no, i REALLY suck in 3D), but i know a few techniques. You should copy the polygons that make up the face that your shapes will touch, and using "drill" cut them in shape with the white stuff on your char. Then, by trippling, merging and tweaking this, you can get a clean model, extrude, and tada!! (you should also remove the polys facing the skin)
diazgl
03-16-2002, 04:22 AM
ok, BACK!!! (pant pant) Well, i was fooling around with lW, and I found a good way. Actually, i modelled it myself!! (hope you don't mind!!)
Try to make the shape as a polygon, then extrude, then bevel,, so that each point of the polygon moves inward. Fix any overlapping polygons, delete the polygon with >4 points and fill in the rest by hand. As for the two spots that are hull, i went about that later, after I finished, made some kind of boleean operation (smth like cut), fixed any >4 polygons and then converted to Nurbs!

03-16-2002, 06:43 AM
hey sangotten the model doesn't look that bad, but does that mean you won't do the 2d version:confused:
well your concept of this character is great enough to be done in 3d or 2d :) i must agree with batmanuel i also like how you stuck to the blue!
as for me, i have a couple of ideas waiting for my spring break next week to have some time for the challenge.
good luck!!!:D

He Sangotten,
Finally I made time to see the page,
AndI must say you gave me an excelent advise I think I'llpost one of my really beginner 3DMax things and ask for help.
By the way your demeon design is cool man, The only thing I would have chanced is the ear and the eye. With them an other collor it looks like a mask and I get more the idea that it is his skin. But yes, that is what I would have done.
By the way don't leave the 3D moddel I thought it was going great. Well finish it before I'll come and see you for some advise.
By he way how did your Fire ball project go. ( The fire ball that hoovered above the ground.) I'll PM you further before I'llmake your Threath a converdsation.
;) C ya
GEEE....you really did it! GREAT!...i think that is a very difficult job to model that kind of 2d style!!

Okay guys I'm now officially asking for help!:(
Since I have not enough experience and time to finish the model of Nefriath, I'm asking for someone to model it. Skello offered it but he stopped because of my ambition to model it myself, But due to my other stuff I want to do for this challenge (2D work) I offer a colaboration!!!

03-25-2002, 05:48 PM
Okay some explaining...
So-hi...about those globes behind her ears...I thought I go for some kind of star wars rip-off design, remember the Princess from the first episodes (the old ones offcourse)? Well it is based on her weird hair behind her ears. With Sephriath it's something all females from her race wear, it's a status symbol and it atracks the men.
Diazgl: Thanx, Maybe it looks different because next to my wacom tablet I use not the normal airbrush tool in photoshop, I use the tight airbrush tool...does it make sense??? Okay I try to finally color in the style of this dude>> Hyung-Tae Kim (http://nitty.beramode.nu/)
Damn I should get working....

Hey Sang,
The only thing on your painting about the jewel on the head. You drew it correctly, but when you have begun painting it is getting too big. The whole jewel is coming over to this side too much. This is a straight on side view. Be careful not to show too much of it. If you looked at it from the front right now it would look rather oval, not round. Other than that, you've done a fantastic job.
