3dcga 06-02-2006, 03:47 PM After so many hours of learning, I finally decided to get my reel done since its time for me to look for a job. I know there's a lot to improve on but right now I would like to share with you and get all your opinions and suggestions, so I can look out on such issues in the future. Thanks a lot to everyone who have commented and critiqed on my work so far, which really helped me learn :)

Helloooooo....anyone out there?

that's not bad at all.
Overall your animation is pretty good.
The cat walkcycle needs a little weight. the body of the cat doesn't seem to rest on the legs...
The opening dialog is pretty good. I think if you keep animating and watching good animation you'll just get better and better in time.
Some of your animations could use some smoothing in the motion, sometimes a character will hit a hard stop (like the lady's right hand when she says "out of the way" stuff like that. Again this will improve with experience and practice.
good stuff,

Mehdianim,
Thanks for your feedback! I'll keep improving myself. Hope I can atleast get a job with this reel :p
I hope people can kindly reply more to this thread. My reel might not be great, so please leave your comments, suggestions and critique so I can work on my flaws for the future. :)

Agree with the above and also your characters are penetrating objects accidentally, that needs to be avoided. I did notice that the wrists were behaving like they were fixed in space for long periods causing loss of fluidity in your characters arm movement.

hey
yeah i think ure reels not bad at all. I would take that 'cat' out of there tho, it does nothing for ure reel at all.
good stuff, just keep doing more shots and take the weaker shots out one by one and it will get better and better. good luck with ure job hunting.

Good stuff, and good luck with getting a job... I also agree with the above comments, just keep fine tuning your stuff... try to get more smoothing out of those rough jerky frames, a little more ease in and out... and yeah, just keep watching great animation and pay attention to what the masters do... that's a great way of how we can all get better :)

Dude......I gotta say I love the "Ugly" Lipsynch. Hilarious. I've watched it over and over. Really good acting there. Keep it up. I'm currently trying to spruce up on my own character acting now. Good stuff.......

Obviously you wanted to show your Character animation skills specifically. With a minor (and I mean minor) tweak here and there, these animations would be flawless. The Emperor's New Groove is one of my all time favourite anims so I really loved that little part. You executed it beautifully. Also the bit from 40yr Old Virgin was very good. Your lipsyncing and secondary animation is awesome.
I once read an article written by someone who approves people in the US animation film industry (and thus looks at a lot of demo reels). According to him, a demoreel should be something unique which immediately captures the viewer's attention because they get so many and can't look at every single one. I think you've done that in your first little sequence but I think the walk cycles and the "pushing a rock up a hill" sequence are a little repetitory from some other reels I have seen.
Also, the fact that you've paid hardly any attention to anything else than animation might not count in your favour when approaching smaller companies where you need to at least be proficient in other fields than your main field of expertice.
Overall though, great work.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll try to tweak more if I can. And ofcourse, I hope I can improve myself over time.
Keep the C & C coming :)
I really liked the dialogue pieces, they were great. I agree about removing the cat cycle, the weakest clip in my opinion.
In the karate jump in the end I was expecting something more spectacular with that kind of speed. Anyway great job!

Thanks manx! I'm thinking of removing the catwalk or atleast tweak it to be better.

I love this reel!
Everyone keeps mentioning your cat, and I'm sorry but I've got to mention it too.
It really does hurt the reel, but here's a little hint to help you fix one of its major problems that nobody seems to know about:
If you look at some reference you will notice that cats do NOT walk with alternating legs like most 4 legged creatures. The cat, the camel, and the giraffe are the only animals that walk with the right legs moving at the same time and the left legs moving at the same time, shifting their weight from one side to the other. Ok, correction. For us animators, the front leg will move slightly ahead of the back leg, so there will be a little bit of delay on the hind leg. Again, look at some reference to help you with the timing.
Cats do this for agility and silence, and also helps preserve energy for when they need speed.
I hope this helps you!

Thanks a lot man! I'll either remove the catwalk or go back to tweaking it before putting it in my reel. :D

No problem, I hope it turns out.
And just for future reference...I'm not a man ;)

What sticks out most to me is when the guy in the toilet points his finger at the other guy. Looks like the chest is making a very "computerish" move forth and back (i mean the z rotation). The way the arm reaches the ending pose could be more straight (without bending before). The eyes seem to be looking at somewhere else in the room, it feels weird. The dialogue could have been supported better with some distinct head gestures too.
To me that one is the weakest shot on the reel. The other stuff is decent

feebsicle: roger, Ma'am ! :D
Loolarge: Thanks for pointing that out. I'll work on it if possible :)
Watched this sooo many times!! I personally find the first acting piece and the goy in the toilet one the best ones.

Hey Adeeb. Pretty cool reel. :D I do agree with comments being left so I won't reapeat them. I really do like the Emperor's New Groove one. In the future, though, be careful to use dialogs from animation features. It's almost unavoidable the people will start comparing.
Otherwise, really cool reel.

Thanks man! :D
I agree with the ENG clip. It was just an exercise to learn the 2d style and blend my own acting in. I decided to add it in since it look "ok" for my reel. I guess I have to come up with something better next time to replace it :p

Hi Adeeb, Nice reel, I think your acting/performance are stronger than the walkcycle, however they are still good.

Thanks, Lique! I agree with you.
I decided to put in some cycles since I was gonna apply for some game animator positions. I'll try to improve on my cycles in the future :)

Hi,nice reel.I like your way of thinking.I must say,i didn't like all of your animation. But i can see some progress in the near future.Add some ease in ease out, strong silhouette, arcs, and make the weight visible(see the push anim)...you know...all the "old" stuff.:) .But y're on the right way.Keep it like this.Ahh...and....excuse my english. :D

Wah, you revived an old thread dude. Thanks for the feedback. This reel is already 6 months old. I can already see a lot of mistakes in it. Hopefully my next reel will be much better than this crap :p
