View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - King_Mob
KingMob 01-10-2003, 10:50 PM Hey guys, I got an idea .
Sort of like the ents, but made of stone. A shepard of the hills as it were.
I'll post sketches soon and a little background.
Might change tho, but thats my initial thought.

Wow, awesome concept king!
I actually had the exact same thought, but opted to go a different route! But you should go with this one cause it would fit into the LOTR very nicely!
Cant wait to see more!

ok heres the story
"mountent" (name pending)
these creatures don't trouble themselves with any of middle earth, unless it is provocked (mining uncheck etc).
They are as old as the hills themselves, and have helped guide the creation of the mountains and the hills. THo generally they move at a speed no race could possibly see (slow slow slow) they can move quite fast if needed.
Size wise, they are not mountain sized, but larger than most hills.
It takes alot of effort for each movement, and they come in all forms of stone and crystals of the earth.
Ok not such a great story yet...but thats my initial thought.

ok cool, final concept sketch, just to show size relation to a human.
I was gona do some more sketches, but i have done abunch of thumbs and such and have a good mental picture in my head now, so on with the modeling :bounce: http://ian.gravityfree.com/stoneent3.jpg
btw that thing on his upper right shoulder is a tree. This sketch didnt scan to well. I draw very lightly so most my details get lost.
One day I will be able to afford a wacom...it will be oh so wonderfull!
Looking good King...i'll be keeping and 'EYE' on you...:D

Looks awesome! I like the rock idea. On the textures you could put little inclusions of crystal here and there that catch the light. Who knows you could have little creatures that live in caves on him as well! "Man I got the worse case of the cavemen! It itches like crazy!" Hehe :D

hey guys, small update, was playing with the textures on this thing...cause i suck at texturing, and thought I would post the results.

thanks Leigh, any tips on texturing rock would be greatly appreciated..i have done very little with texturing! (your elf wraith looks amazing to , but i didn't want to add more praise to your thread... just know I think it rocks)
anyways, as for the shadow info yeah I agree, esp the lower jaw part, I am painting these by hand (with a light texture of rock bump on multiply in photoshop, but that not what casting the pseudo shadows, that just soemthing i was playing with for different rock level, but forgot to take it off...iff i keep it i need to actually do that to the mesh, otherwise it looks like an innacurate shadow.
Remi : thanks man, that all I want...for it to look like a rock beast hehe. Love the hobbit pet to...cutest entry by far!

It's looking quite good so far. The base colors are great for stone, for when I look at it, I know immediatly that's it's a stone creature. Just needs alot more bump maps, exspecially around the mouth area. You need to crack up those lips into side by side boulders.
Keep it up:wip: :wip: Can't wait to see more!

WELL played Mr. King Mob. WELL played indeed.
Imagine that, YOU, starting over...? Ahh, but indeed it's looking really nice. Though I too, would have opted for more jaggies like the fellow board viewer person mentioned before but, well... I am smarter than you. Speaking of jaggies, this rock creature recalls for me a time, in the mountains, a simpler time... when the girls were real and the mountains were...

king thats SOOOOOO awesome, i think it blows away your first concept by far. This one has so much more character. I love the hunchback look you gave him too. I agree the feet look a bit like big boots, but hey maybe thats what they are! Great job man, what are you thinking for the final mesh? Will he be smooth or hard and chisled like the manly rock shepherd he is? I say go for chisled cause i really liked that original render you did way back when.

Awsome I love it! I say for the feet just make the toes on one of the two more prominent/defined, and less on the other. That would give it some unsymmetry:) It's awsome!

Looking cool :D
The only prob is, as I told you on IRC, the symmetry problem. You really need to start getting rid of it! Make each limb REALLY DRASTICALLY different too - go wild!
A suggestion: Although it is a rock ent, it might be cool to add a few shrubberies here and there. You know those creeper vine things and little scrubby bushes that tend to grow on cliff faces and stuff? A few of those might look very cool!
gnarlycranium
02-10-2003, 03:40 AM
Some moss, maybe a bit of mulch... if there's shrubberies make sure they're tasteful-- not too large, not too expensive... if you have trouble with that, I know this guy Roger... ;)
That thing is looking fabulous! I'm just wondering, though, how his head is attached to his body.... the neck seems a bit too organic-ish maybe? Seeing the start of the project, I kept picturing his head like a rock kinda sitting inside a hollow that it can rattle around and turn inside of.... heh. Same for the fingers... though I guess it all depends on what you want him to seem like he's made out of-- something partially flexible, or something made of shifting chunks and plates.
Agent D

My only crit here is that I wish his legs / arms were not that easy to see. Think of the first sketch you posted, it was basically a stone with eyes and mouth!

This looks really cool! My only crit/suggestion is that the proportions don't really fit this character... Let me try to explain: the large arms and legs, and especially the oversized lower parts of the limbs give him a mood that doesn't fit with Middle Earth, at least for me. It's more like manga, or some hack'n'slash fantasy, or yes, a transformer :) - it lacks that touch of 'reality' that was present in the LOTR movies. Your original sketches had better proportions IMHO - I wonder how the 3D model would look like if it would resemble them a bit more.

i'm in love with your texture work :D This guy will truly roll over the compitition :D, an idea I had was perhaps put some viens of metals along his body, like gold, and silver, have some parts of him seem like they've been sitting out in the open not moveing for a long time (growth) then some parts look like stone that has just be cut and grated on... Prolly want the "used" and warn rock around the joints i'm assumeing... Also I would suggest making his nuckles a bit more "Nobbly" if ya get what i mean... ooohh and it would be kool if his eye's were gaint jems.

and I know that the creature is supposed to be quite old, but to better represent rock or stone, shouldn't he have more jagged edges. If you smooth him out too much, you run the risk of him being thought of as constructed of earth(dirt).
KingMob

Hey guys, thanks for all the replys.
ytrabbit: your right, I will work on getting a more jagged appearance. I am seeing a bit to soft look in the body. THo i do want him to appear somewhat like dirt/rock/fauna. I dont want the dirt to over power it. thanks for the reply.
tsuru: also a good point. I will def add more moss at the very least for some color :)

See, all that UV editing was worth it, eh? :D
Only crits, like I mentioned, are:
- the shadows are a little dark, otherwise, I really like the lighting. Just bring up the ambient, or render with radiosity or something. Placing him in an environment would be totally cool too ;)
- the tree tendrils colour is too plain. Make them nice and blotchy!
Now you also just need to get that forest happening on his shoulder or back, and he will be perfect!!
I think the texturing on the body part is particularly excellent :) I also love the sedementary look on the arms :D

one crit, like leigh said though, the "tendrils" are to clean.. minor thing you probably have thought of already.
keep going, I'm glad you don't have much time left!! :D ;)
Great work King:buttrock: run run run!

This is the first time I've really read your thread. VERY cool model and texture.
It reminds me of the Stone Trolls in one of Terry Pratchett's DiscWorld books. can't 'member the book though...

WoW!
Now it REALLY kicks a$$, Kingmob!
All I have to say is "It's clobberin' time!"
Now THIS I would have liked to have seen in one of the LOTR movies! Jackson took enough liberties to nerf the story, this character would bump it back up a notch or three!
Marvelous work!
Oh, and KingMob...if you haven't figured it out by now...I like it, I like it!:)

That's looking sooooo good man. Nice Job so far. My suggestion would be to tone down those orange lights....they aint doing the model justice. Since you've spent so much time on texturing this guy use more white lights...or whatever is on the rt. side of his body...that makes it look more natural. I Also agree with your idea on desaturating those vines. Looking great man!

I can't believe you JUST said that... nerfed? pft, the storys have the same story, slight revisions are in there becuase of restraints put onto jackson, such as he had to keep the movie short enough so hence had to chop stuff out.... and its a big book, you can't expect EVERY little single detail to be in the movie without boring the audiance becuase the atmosphere wasn't set...
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :'(

kingMob, those textures are looking superb. I think you should keep moving in the direction of dirtier, grittier. ... anyways, he's really coming him to life, good job.

Excellent work so far!
I'm looking forward to seeing the final but before you start rendering ;) I know you've got some trouble with the trees but I think it would be nice to add some trees on the feet or at least on one foot... what do you think?
Well, it looks great anyway...

I like it!
Maybe focus the light a little more around his head, cause in some perspectives your eyes wander a bit before you actually find the head.
Maybe that is the point though, I know not;)
