How about some kind of water based creature. Maybe with some sediment from the bottom of the Stream/River from which he came. You could even make it a sediment skeletal structure. Just throwing some ideas out to ya.

Look around you down there in South Africa, get out a little bit out of the city. Doesn't Africa have all the exotic wildlife? That should be some inspiration. Unless that idea is so totally out of the question it'll inspire you to think of something staying in doors!

Thanks for all the kind comments and ideas! :D
Okay, now since I am a mod and I can't win the challenge, I have decided to go for a heavy influence from the Elves, and I think what I am going to do is an Elven wraith.
Since I do not have a scanner here (it's at my folks place), and my Wacom is giving me grief on this computer, I'm going to start modelling now, and then post the concept when I can....
So, see you all soon with a taste of what is to come! :bounce:

Elven wraith......................Sounds real speacial. Knowing your love for all that is textures it will be great to see what you have in store as a skin color, plus possible extras upon the overall character. Being a Wraith will you be going for a transparent type wispy ethereal look?
This will be fun to follow Leigh. See you after your update. :)

Thanks kindly for all the supportive words again :)
Okay, here is a description of what I am making...
The idea of this character is an Elven Wraith.
In Quenya, it would be called an ëala-anamo ( "spirit of doom"). These spirits, no doubt the manifestations of the tortured souls of elves slain in battle, haunt ancient battlegrounds and are said to appear to elves and wizards, and other "higher" races in times of peril or danger.
Their outward appearance is haggard and frightening, and they are still garbed in their battle armour. Their continued torment inbetween the realm of the living and the dead cause them to contort their faces, and writhe as if in pain.
Although the armour and cloaks that they wear appear to be solid, their actual bodies have a wraithlike appearance, that is they appear to have no solid subtsance to them, but rather a feathery, wisp-like quality that constantly quivers.

looking good, a samurai elf perhaps? this is going to look great textured :)
leigh
01-12-2003, 06:58 AM
Hehehe not a samurai, no :p
What I have used for a lot of my ideas are the concept designs on the LOTR dvds - all the Elven designs are very organic, with shapes derived from nature. I still need to tweak the armour here a bit - especially the shoulder armour, to get the shapes more leaf-like ;)
When they are textured, I will be putting faint Celtic style designs into the armour, almost like etchings, to detract from the eastern look somewhat, although there will also still be a faint trace of eastern influence in it.
In the documentaries on the dvd, the designers at Weta workshop said that their designs were supposed to have an historical (as opposed to totally fantastical) look, but of an indiscernable origin. So that is the kind of thing that I am going for - something that looks like it could have been around at some point in our own history, but which has a culture that is difficult to pinpoint completely :)

Boy oh boy,or should I say Girl oh girl, really very nice high quality work Leigh espeacially in such a short time. Very nice elven feel to the armor already. Possibly a little "Mithral" mixed in with the armor here or there? I am very big on intricate details, and you are showing them well already.
Very nice thus far ,it's got a very elegant look already, just as a elven Wraith's armor should have.

I have to agree that you should use some template to fit the armor on, it looks a bit too thin right now.
Hey Wiro... can't find your challenge thread. Don't tell me you want to miss it :)

01-12-2003, 10:34 PM
Thanks so much for all the kind comments, everybody, it's really good to see all the support  Thank you, all of you :)
Wiro - I'm just kinda going with the flow. I'll kinda build the body out of what I have here. Remember, the body is going to be withered and wraithlike, so it will almost be something that kinda floats inside the armour.
Laa-Yosh - yeah, some areas (especially around the belt) need some tweaks, to give the structure a more believable look, however, the Elves are rather slender things - not all that much shape to them. I have thickened the armour out somewhat, in terms of it's width :)
And here is another hours worth of modelling!

Wonderful progress on the armor/clothing . . . the attention to detail on the buckles and fasteners is really great!
As for the proportions . . . I kinda like the idea that the transformation to wraith has warped the shape and look of the armor and the character itself. The ringwraiths in the movie were very distorted in this way . . . at least when Frodo saw their true form while wearing the ring. It might be interesting to actually modify the elven armor a bit and maybe "evil" it up a tad . . .
Just my 2cents . . . :D
Keep up the wonderful work!

Thanks once again for all the overwhelming support
uthuan - since this Elf would have been slain in battle, I will be messing the armour up a bit once it's done. I'm going to make some of the plates slightly unhinged and I'm going to add cuts and holes in the plates her and there.
I like your idea of contortion  I'm not going to for exactly the same look as in the film, but something similar ;)
However, I'm not going to make him look evil - for once, I'm going to make a nice character! :D
Here is another quick update. I've thickened the armour more, so that his torso appears more sturdy.

01-13-2003, 12:57 AM
Leigh, how did you model the armor? Did you use spline, the thickener plug-in or something else? It looks really good, I think you keep getting better quickly.
Make sure the proportions are right before you keep going tho, looks a big long. If you notice an error proportion-wise later on it will be difficult to correct with all the detail.
Iguiniz.X.
01-13-2003, 01:03 AM
I c you have a keen eye or detail,
This is looking great, can't wait to c you fill the aromor with this wisp like body.
Although I think the proportions are right and the armor wil substain a wisp like body. ANd don't know if it is your intention.
But I can't get the feeling away that tells me that the contour of the body is a bit to vertical/ thin.
I would say that it is arround the hips were a bit more volume might give it a less thin look..
Can't put it better into words..
The middel one of the three armors in you last picture gives me the impresion I try to explain..
Edit: seems likePhil "Osirus" posted the smame at the same time
leigh
01-13-2003, 01:43 AM
Thanks a lot for all the suggestions, most appreciated
Phil "Osirus" - I just model from scratch, and then kinda wrap the polys over at the edges to form nice edges for the armour :)
I almost always tend to model poly by poly. I use mainly Extender and Bandsaw to model.
And yeah, there is a bit of an issue with the length. I've made the torso a little more squat now, but I want to try and maintain an Elf like statue to him - which is kinda tall.
Iguiniz.X. - thanks for the suggestions :) Yeah, I need to increase his hips, thanks for reminding me ;)

01-13-2003, 02:15 AM
Thanks mdme_sadie, I'm trying to fix this now :)
Oh, and he's going to have a nice big billowing cloak soon ;)
Okay, I've wteaked the plates around the hips so that they all angle out more, providing more movement for the Elf, as well as increasing his thickness a bit. I need to change the skirt part still though.

I like the elongated torso personally, it gives it a decidedly non-human look that I really enjoy. I think the low rise skirt piece of the armor makes the proportions look further off than they actually are. Looks cool though, I really like the Eastern feel to the armour
continueing to be amazed....thought you were a texture gal not a modeler...
leigh
01-13-2003, 03:55 AM
DivideByZero - thanks! Hehehe, actually this is only about 8 hours of modelling :)
And yeah, of course I sleep - it's just not bedtime yet!
Tommy Lee - thanks! :D
lowdown - I actually also like the torso elongated. Also, since it's a wraith, it might be cool to have an elongated look, because ghosts always seem to be too long - the proportions do indeed make it look less human. And yeah, it is the low cut of the skirt which creates the illusion that the torso is even more elongated than it is - those are his shins sticking out the bottom!
Thanks for the compliment!
Remi - thanks a lot!

Hey there leigh,
Although I haven't entered yet (have to finish up some work), I am probably going to be doing a spirit creature to. I am a little bit worried about the ethereal aspect of a ghost. So what I am basically saying is, I'll probably be asking you how you did yours when you get there:p
Can't wait to see this one finished, it's shaping up really nicely (and only two days in:eek: )

Dirk_P_Ho - breaks are for people who are tired! I have some energy left!! Thanks :)

Apt Pupil - Cool to hear that someone else is doing an ethereal character! And yeah, of course I'll be sure to help you out in any way that I can
HellRender - it's a magical substance called coffee!! :D
And here is another update for tonight! (Well, actually it's morning now :p)
The great thing about modelling a head in a helmet is that you only have to model the face!!!
The actual body (arms, hands, legs and head) still need a lot of tweaking - at the moment, they are sort of generic limbs, which I will then tweak to suit my character :)
Oh, and in this render I've added some guides to show the limb sizes - as I mentioned earlier, that skirt kinda makes the body look an odd shape, so I added those guides to show where the actual body parts are ;)

Exactly! ...and aren't wraiths usually a bit "skeletal" too.. so that's why he looks skinny...well anyway I think it is not too skinny.
Materials will change the look anyway and if there is going to be some ethereal fog or something around him, he will be perfect.

Sometimes it's good to go against the tide. But with this you don't want to stray too far,it does have boundaries. There are limitations to this challenge. I think right now the elf looks alot like a gladiator, which is a big compliment. But with textures coming up the wraith like look will take center stage. As of now a guard of Rome, but with time a wraith of tolkian Worlds it will be.Very nice model.:)

Awesome start! I'm a Lightwave User too. For me it has the best interface for modeling, and a kick butt renderer as well! I'll be waiting to see what kind of engraving is on the armor and how it looks! You could do some kind of "ethereal energy" dimly radiating from them. *steals into leighs mind*
The body is still a little bit thin, the problem i think is that you've modelled the armour as if it were skin, thats why it looks thin.

I think one of the problems here is that the armor would not fit on your average elf. True, it is being worn by a wraith, but this wraith was once an elf, and the armor should not change size just because the wearer has less substance. I think the armor should be proportioned more towards the build of an elf and then let sag a little as if it's too large for the thin, ethereal body underneath.
Otherwise, that's some bloody nice modeling

Righty righto...
I must admit, I rather like the lankiness of it right now, I think that I will probably keep him thin like this :)
To address a few comments here regarding the design of the armour - I mostly based it on the designs from the film for Gil-Galads army, and then i just sorta chucked my own flavour into it :D
Remember, once the armour is done, I'm going to be mucking it up a bit - pulling plates lose and such, since he was in battle, after all ;)
LOL at Mangled Polys pic...
The reason I haven't updated yet today is because I've been doing the tedious task of my monthly site update :p

I'm not 100% happy with the feet yet though  They are supposed to be leather booties... perhaps I should add some armour plating to them...

I agree with the others about the color scheme, only because its a wraith and the armor is "ancient". I would go with more shades of grey where the time has washed out the color and faded it. Plus its a ghost, even though the armor is real I think shades of greys including the metal. Then some faint blood stains on the armor from his own death as well as his latest victims would be cool too.

I have to agree with Mangled Poly & BladeFX on this one- I think a more "magical" dark silver color would look better than the gold- but that's just my opinion- either way I'm sure it'll be great!!! 3DF.

Amazing work Leigh, as everyone else has stated.
I just have a few questions.
What kind of Elf was he? IE -- from Lothlorien or Rivendell?
I noticed in the movies that the warrior elves had more royal colors -- like deep blues/purples. Remember the Archers that fought at Helms Deep and in the Prologue? However since this is a new race of Middle Earth, I'm sure a Green clad Elf would be great!
Keep up the great work!
Jon

01-14-2003, 09:29 PM
Thanks a lot for all the suggestions :D
Here is another colour scheme - kinda like the Elves that rock up with Haldir at Helms Deep, as Tiburon3D and Mangled Poly suggested.
Remember, these are just REFERENCES - this is the way that the armour supposedly looked when it was new. Obviously, when I texture it, it will be old, damaged, rusted and covered in old stains and marks!
I just wanted to make a "perfect" Elf before wraithifying it ;)
Oh, and as you can see, I've made some slight structure changes (again) - widened the torso armour out a bit, and also lengthened his skirt, because it was even becoming confusing for me to look at :surprised

It's just so bright for a spirit creature. I like the longer skirt, I think it would look cool longer and more flowing too, with decaying cloth and whatnot.
Here's my suggestion for the colours:
leigh
01-14-2003, 10:21 PM
Thanks people :)
Lowdown, how long do you think I should make the skirt? I'm considering making in full length...
Oh and as for the colours - they aren't going to be staying this way! This is how he looked before he went into battle :)
I wanted to make a perfect elf first, and then turn it into a wraith :)
I'm going to mess up the armour and clothing a lot - the armour plates are going to be damaged, and the cloth will be old and worn and stuff.
Those changes are coming soon!!! :bounce:
Mangled Poly
01-14-2003, 10:26 PM
leigh i agrre with lowdown i dont liek the purplish cloth as i originally said silver and like a blu navy blue color
Joel Hooks
01-14-2003, 10:26 PM
I think a full length skirt, with maybe even the slight hint of a train following behind would be pretty neat. I like the split, which of cours is functional for riding horses and such.
I didn't know you were going before and after. That's cool. I know you are gonna bust out with the kickass grunge maps, I just think the base colour would be more pleasant if it was nice and deep, without so much saturation.
You'll have to create his demon steed too!;)
Long skirt rocks!(your entire model too:buttrock: ) but I'm still not satisfied with the proportions... if you're sure about the body, I'd say the head is too big. I'm not saying that just to crit, but because it bugs me and I don't appreciate your model as much as I should.

I'd bring the saturation back a bit on the clothes, and match the leather of the shoes to that of the belt (that is some sort of fashion rule, no?). Will that armour around the waist facilitate riding?

really nice so far, leigh :)
about the skirt, though. elves in the movies had that really nice, antique look, with the embroidered layered skirts. even the warriors did.
a good reference is the FOTR extended edition, one of the cd's has loads of the concept art. If you have it, have a look at the concepts for gil-galads army.
i've also attached a really quick, rough sketch-over of your elf skirts in photoshop to show you what i mean.

I agree with what m@ said about the head, it would look better if it where a bit smaller. it would make him look stronger and more powerful. the hand looks a bit to thin to, more flesh there would be cool, warriors have strong hands, no? maybe not elven wraiths, I'm not an expert :)
small things.. nonetheless, what I'm really looking forward is the texturing stage. there I'm sure I'll learn a few things from you! :)

I'm glad that fellah sees the same thing that me about the head (but I don't agree with him for the hands, slender hands are just right for an elf, even more if he's a wraith :) )...I'm not the only one.. . try and post a render with a slightly smaller head, 95% or something like that.
Also, I like the new belt position.

dang it! I'll be the bad guy... which sucks because I think this model rrrrules.
The hands look really boxy still, they could use some refining. The way the fingers bend is still a bit sharp as well (eek, Leigh's gonna hate me)
The cloth/dress looks good, but the way it puffs out at the knee area is kind of akward. It makes his upper torso look weak. *personally* (gulp) so I think you should widen the shoulders to give a more masculine look.
I'm really gonna stop talkin now!:D

Thanks so much for all the comments, everybody - you all rock! :xtreme:
Not sure if I will have an update today, because I am working on my book
Just to reply to comments...
Faraguay - by the time the textures are done, the armour will be pretty old and discoloured anyway ;)
Grugi - I intentionally distorted some of the proportions to make him appear less human. Especially with the leg length - because he's an elf, I though it might be cool to emphasise his height be lengthening his legs. He is 1.8 metres tall.
fellah - I'll try making the head a wee bit smaller, and see how it looks ;) Thanks!
m@. - smaller head coming soon ;) And yeah, I also prefer the new belt position :)
That Adrian Guy - THANKS!! Thank you VERY much for that - I was just waiting for someone to mention the crappy hands! :D I hate the way they look! I've been meaning to tweak them, but just haven't gotten around to it! They are so damn boxy that I've just being doing my best to ignore them up until now hehehehehe...
As for the skirt - I kinda made it a bit puffy to imply some kind of movement... perhaps I should tweak it though.... I'll also bring the shoulders out a bit - thanks again for your suggestions  Very appreciated!
To everyone else - thanks so much for all the kind comments, there are too many to reply to individually! I'll be going with the colour scheme on the right then!

Sorry there hasn't been an update for a few days, but I have been really busy with my book. Hopefully I will have time for another update before the end of the weekend :D
In the meantime, I hope that everyone is having fun with their own entries - looking through all the threads here, it certainly looks like everyone is! Keep up the great work everyone, this is turning out to be an awesome challenge!
No updates? ........:hmm: ..............ok ok...u have done a very cool work.U are so quick!! I must to sey that ur character is one of the most " LOTR like" here!...is cool to see something that u can imagine in the movie! COOL AGAIN!

Thanks OZ and Remi :)
Just a bit too busy with my book, and with chatting on CG Talk on IRC to work on this at the moment :P
Anyhoo, thought I'd jump on the GI bandwagon and show a render of the model as it stands:

Looking good, Leigh... as usual ;)
Men han är lite för smal tror jag.
Anyways, keep it up! Its gonna be awsome when you texture it! :D:D
Hurry, hurry, hurry! :bounce: :bounce:
Fantastic job so far Leigh. I would love to see a small video tut on how you model poly by poly. I know that you are really busy at the moment, but once you have some time, could you make a small tut on modeling something that won't take too long to make, yet complex enough to require your method of modeling?
I can't wait to see how your wraith will turn out.

Hey Leigh, would it be alright if I use your helmet as a reference and incorporate it as a bit of armor on my characters contraption??? like the Gobutecs (My race) stole it from an elven wraith?
leigh
01-18-2003, 06:02 AM
Joril - yup! :D
Sir_Manfred - still too thin?? :surprised But he's an elf!!
mohh - yeah, I'd love to do a video tutorial some time... I'll see when I can fit it into my schedule ;) Thanks for the compliment :)
Dirk_P_Ho - yeah go ahead! :D I don't mind at all! If you want, I can send you the reference pics I used to model it.

01-18-2003, 06:07 AM
That would be great Leigh!, actually i've modelled it a bit but the mesh is a little wonky. but it sure wouldnt hurt to have more refrence, especially since its just a 3/4 view of yours that ive gone off of..

Great Job! Hope he makes an appearance in your book :D
One thing, the helmet looks like its squashing the head. Like its been crushed in around the head.
Oh and can I steal some reference too?

urgaffel, Cikala, Derelict, smfjersey, pigwater, dies-irae - thank you very much for your very kind comments :)
Fetus - no plans yet for a background... I'd better start thinking of one though!! Hehehe
Okay, I had this idea - what if, when the armour had originally been made, the Elven smith had put a thin layer of gold into the patterned inlays - since Elves are very artistic, it seems like the kind of thing they would do.
Because gold doesn't rust, it would just kinda flake off over the years, and I thought that it might be kinda nice to have some flecks of gold still remaining here and there in the inlays... what do you guys think? Gold or no gold? Or perhaps not gold, but mother-of-pearl, or something like that?

Cool Leigh:) Do you mean you edited it afterward ? Aaagh (if so)
Yeah Leigh yeah:buttrock:
Gold, i think gold will really do it. Had it been more of an asian topic i would have said mother of pearl but elfs would be gold.
Can the rings be gold too? maybe a bit eroded or with moss?
Sweet.

Beautifully done Leigh..........
I cannot say how much intricate details mean to me personally. Modeling, texturing, ideas with original concepts are all very important respectively but...............Going that extra mile as you have with the armor is quite impressive. I am a big fan of the scroll type patterns on objects. It's that kind of depth that take anything into the next level as you have with your armor.
It's fun to see you progress, and it will continue to be so.......Fine,fine job. :applause:

This is truely an suprior texture.....8 hours you say.....:buttrock:
I never had thought the armor would fit this well to the character.
Since the character has an wisp body and is realy acient, the worn out armor with rust and also some places were gold still remains.
Trully excelent.
When I take a look back at the background it is said that he/ she is killed by the enemy long ago.
I sudgest you inflict some damage to the armor like a missing ring,
rings that ain't complety round or a hole were the killing strike -of an arrow, for example- had struck.
And some part of th armor that have been broken of.
:applause:
I knew you van texture, know I know it betterbut I'm really anctious to see how you will bring the wisp like body in exprecion

wow. leigh, you are seriously one of my heroes. Is there a thread somewhere where you discuss your book? I'd like to get a scoop on what you'll be covering? Just texturing, or modeling too? It'd be nice to have a texturing book out there to rival that new riders one.

Hi !
I've been mostly lurking for a while, but had to post when I noticed this excellent thread.
That is truly great work, Leigh! I'm blown away! I thought I'd just have a quick look through, but ended up reading every single post in this thread during the last few hours. It's been great fun following your progress ! I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing it receive the final deadly touches by the texturing goodess :)

Wow, I am so very touched by all the amazing kind comments posted by everyone! There are just too many too respond to everyone individually, but I want you all to know that I appreciate everything that every one of you has said :)
I am overwhelmed by all the support! :wavey:
Well, after FAR too much socialising in the last 24 hours (especially on that very addictive CG Talk IRC channel - you guys ROCK!!), I finally got some more work done! Here are some pics:

And another view...
http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/images/elf_torso_04.jpg
As you can see, I've started adding actual damage to the armour too.
And many people have asked to see what my UV map for the torso armour plates looks like - well, here below is the result of many hours of carefully pushing points! :D
http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/images/elf_armour_UV.jpg
As for the actual image maps, I'll start posting them up onto my site within the next few days so that people can have a look at them. I'll let you know when they are up! :)
