OMG Leigh!! You know I haven't been on CGTalk for long and I am still learning about all of the members. I haven't had a chance to see all of your works. I have to tell you right now that the TextureGoddess title doesn't do you justice. This rocks beyond rocking!! :airguitar Just wowsers! I feel so insignificant...lol As a famous duo once said..........."I'm not worthy....I'm not worthy..."  I am glad you kept the gold...I think it sets if off just perfectly!

This is awesome Leigh! I know what you mean about IRC, it can suck you in pretty quickly! Especially when the alternative is pushing around points on a UV map! I can't wait to see how the drapery looks.

just to add to the rest... WOW!!!!! I came here from another forum so I could have a go at some competitions & having read this thread from start to finish I feel so far out of my depth that i need scuba gear! Leigh, you are my idol, I worship the ground you hover above!

One small point (hope you don't mind) but wouldn't the areas around the damage (I'm looking mainly at the part of the armour that has 'snapped') be more rusty than the rest?

Just a thought, maybe wrong, after all I am but a novice.

Tommy Lee - thanks! Your entry is absolutely bloody amazing too!! So it's a big compliment coming from you!!

Az0r - thanks a lot. Knowing that my work has inspired someone is a great feeling - makes me all warm and fuzzy inside :D

Knifejuggler & show - you're right about that part being more rusty! I'll add some more rust to it right away ;)

nice rusted heml..I think it needs some trim or something to liven it up.

THo with a wraith you might not want to liven it up..

Thanks guys :)

King - get back to your rock ent before I whip you! And yeah, I will be adding more trim once I've had a nice sleep :)

Cougar - thanks! The trim on the helmet is similar to that on the torso armour, but it's a different pattern. I'm still going to be adding more trim to the bottom edges, and also the nosepiece later :)

01-22-2003, 06:05 AM
Hey Leigh, the torso of this armor is so awesome, good job : ). I think the trim of the <insert name of armor piece here> on the torso looks funny for some reason though. The part that has the gold inlay on it has such a different look. Granted it may be a different material that borders it, but it looks a bit like...orange plastic with black spots painted on it.

The gold inlay is a nice touch, but in some pics you cant even see it. Maybe thats intentional, but I think it would be nice if it were just a little more apparent.

Keep going, it looks good : )

Per-Anders
01-22-2003, 06:14 AM
what the helmet needs is some way for the crown to fasten to it... unless it's been made all one peice. just needs to be made out of a few peices as these things most often are. once it's got that it should look the part, maybe teh edges could be sharper too. but htis is finnickety really, great job, keep going :)

Otherwise, you're AMAZING, as always!

Jhonus
01-22-2003, 08:16 AM
i cant see the gold.... did you remove it, or is it just hard to see from far away?

either way it shoudl be strengthened so you can see it from far away.... a littel splash of colour amongst all that rust would go a long way!

goooOOOOoooo LEIGH! (cheerleader chant)

I like the fact that you have the inlays not sooooo very apparant. It looks more realistic this way.If they were made more intense or visible they would scream look at me look at me I am sooo un-natural,they would look like contrived pieces of fake articles. Just put there for that added detailed look for modeling purposes and not as they would look in the Real World or Middle Earth. :)

What do you think of a colorful plume of feathers.....Well actually the remnants of what was once a color plume of feathers. Just a thought for something more......:)

Keep going,it's all very well done and fun to see develope.

urgaffel
01-22-2003, 02:12 PM
I have a crit on the modeling of the helmet. It looks too soft. The corners are rounded. I know, a helmet wouldn't have sharpedges all over (ouch when wearing it) but still. And you can't blame on wear and tear, since the rest of the armor has a few sharp corners :)

Btw, I'm writing a looong mail for you. I'll send it tonight! If I can finish it in time ;)

Hi Leigh,

Let me be the "bollock in the soup" (french expression), by criticizing when everybody's congratulate...

I think your helmet has a problem . Imo, you should build it the same way you did with the rest of the armor : with several pieces attached together .

With "medieval" building constraints, the only way of making a one-piece helmet like yours would be to hammer a metal sheet until it get rounded :wip: , but it would then imply that the thickness of it remains almost the same all along .
I think right now it looks really too "modern", like coming out from a factory/plastic mold .

I really (really really) believe it would look ten times better with a several pieces approch .

Your textures look gorgeous so far !! :applause:

Waiting as everybody for the next wip .
Keep it the good work ! :buttrock:

AgentX
01-24-2003, 04:18 PM
Yeah Leigh, the armor is amazing! I love the detail in it, and the textures are awesome. But i have to agree with El Tonio, that the helmet looks kinda out of place. I agree it prolly would look better in multiple pieces. But other than that it looks great! I can't wait to see more.

It's absolutely amazing what you made here, both model- and texture wise. I was working on such a helmet from the LotR prologue as well, but I don't think I'll ever dare to work on it again after seeiing this.

well i kindof have to agree with dudeguy....looking at the overall texture of the top and the bottom part of the armor the rust looks more like dirty camo than rust.....its hard to put my finger on it..........there's no rhyme or reason as to where the rust is occurring

still awesome tho

01-28-2003, 06:41 PM
The only thing I find disturbing is the helm...if you look at the body armor...the rust is in where rust would be...seems,edges,ect...i'm also assuming that this is just a base color....if you've seen any of leighs prior work, you should know that it will look wonderful...great job leigh...now get your ass working...haven't seen an update for a while now... :wip: :surprised

Okay, first of all, since I just viewed this thread for the first time, I have to admit I haven't read all the posts in it (*ducks*)

It's looking great, and I'm seriously looking forward to see how the cloth is goign to turn out textured!

Oh, and I like the lanky look of him as well, although I kind of agree that the helmet is probably the week part of the model, it doesn't really flow with the style of his breast plates and stuff..

I fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinaly have time for an update! :bounce:

Sorry it's been ages, but I have been writing :)

Thanks for all the comments, support, crits, and suggestions! There are waaaayyy too many to respond to individually (again), so I can't reply to everyone, but I do want to address some points made by people :) :

- the helmet is being altered. It's not finshed yet, but will be soon. I'm busy seperating all the pieces and as soon as I have something looking good, I'll post it.

- There is still a cloack and hood to come.

- I have started on the clothes, but I hate the way they look at the moment, so I am not posting a render yet.

- dudeguy - thanks for the crits and suggestions  I mentioned somewhere earlier that the spec maps are still a bit rough, which is why there isn't too much differentiation between the rusted and non-rusted bits. I'll be dealing with that now.
As for the placement of the rust, I'm a big believer of placing details correctly, and with this, I gave long, hard thought to the placement of the rust, and in the end, decided that an all-over kind of almost-random placement suited it.
As for the designs, nope, I didn't make them from scratch. They came from fonts which I altered ;)
Dirt still to come!

Back to business :wip:

Here is a new render. I've done the gauntlets now, and as you can see I've been playing with the colours in the armour a bit - particularly in the rust areas.

I went through this thread and read most of the posts, and I'm shocked. Who dares to point some troubles with this texturing? I saw works of people that have any doubts about god-like texturing from Leigh and they match 0,00001% of Leigh's skills.

Leigh: I think the good advise from members is welcomed, but critics - how come?????. I haven't seen anything like this from a very long time, mayby besides Markus' Mercedes. Where can I buy you books and video tuts??

Hey Leigh,

Been watching your thread for awile now to see where you were going with it. Just like to say great job texturing Goddess, the textures are wonderful on the armor, so I wont critique that. I think your at a stage that you should really go all out on the modeling of the body of this character. Get those human anatomy books out and use em for reference for this piece, the way its coming out, beautiful btw! I just want to see the body proportionate and the muscularature right on with the armor, you have a great thing going here, keep up the good work...

It's supposed to be metal!

Hehehe...

The funny thing is, I originally textured it to be leather (never posted a render though) and even though I decided to change it to metal, I never quite got rid of the leather look :surprised

There is something about the idea of the leather that has evidently lingered, and snuck into these textures... it's really quite bizarre.

Thanks for all the comments everyone!!

SEL - yeah the arms are actually quite crap. That's because they don't have any elbows LOL I still need to finish them off properly...

oke some comment for you.. lol:)

dudeguy was right..about the detail..

there could be some more tones of rust collor

but for the leather part..now that you say it ,it looks reallyleatherish hehe..
but dont worry..

give it some more shiny spots..and at some places the armor is a little to dark (grey tone) to be a good metal i think..

maybe some crack lines in the rust.. and than make the crack linesa little shiny..

very nice :)

i feel guilty telling u what to do but:
on the shoulder pad where it is sliced perhaps add more silvery spec and more flaky gold like u said :)

ZeroNeuro
02-02-2003, 03:55 AM
Looks great so far leigh :) Perhaps a bit too rough, possibly make the leather have a slightly more shiny specular. Great use of the diffuse channel btw. Also, the rip in the shoulder cairass might be a little too open. Other than that, and a better choice of lighting, I think you have this thing nailed down. I love that belt system! However, I am not sure I agree with the rivets/buttons. This design looks very old. Ancient... perhaps you could use stitching instead? Looks excellent! :applause:

02-02-2003, 06:35 AM
:wip:

And another quick update before I go to bed :)

I've been trying to make this look more like metal... As I mentioned previously, the original leather texture is haunting it to much, so I've gone a little extreme in trying to get it to look metallic.

I do think that there are too many colours here, but I will fix that.

I am concerned that this may be a little too saturated as well...

Looking for some good crits :D

02-02-2003, 06:59 AM
Ok I think the base gold./metal with rust over it is the right direction. Cracks and chips etc, your definatly heading in the right direction. The shoulderpad area, rust where the rain etc would hit it, and the parts that are covered by the above shoulder plate cleaner works good. Keep it comming, and remember certain rustic areas tend to get very rusty(darker) in the middle where the rust has eaten away at the metal the most. So in certain rusted spots i would go for the real depth and have it eat or almost eat right through.

I'm loving what i am seeign though. Keep on posting them =)

I dont know....
I thought it looked more like metal before you did this Leigh.
This looks like somebody smugged on it with gray crayon.
You probrably think it looks like leather because you meant it to look like leather but to me it looks metal-like without the gray stuff.

Looking good though!

ive been analyzing it for a bit leigh and i dont actually think there are to many colors. Except for the red in the upper left area of the x and the red on the right side as well. Everything else looks superb with the metal and gold as base golors.

Try to stop and look at it from the viewer seeing it without trying to crit it. And not the artist. I think you will agree you are on the right track definatly. Soem areas are a bit worn down yes but remember that happens on metal armor.

the metal along the crack of the right shoulder blade(pad)(viewers left) is an awesome touch at depth, adds to the realism. Definatly keep at it.

rolhionjs
02-02-2003, 11:25 AM
Well Leigh, that's always an awesome work !

In my own opinion, i think the last render is too saturate in colors, and we also see too much the procedural bump comparede to the render you did just before the last. I prefered this one, but that's a question of taste i think. Anyway, what do you think about desaturate these colors a little bit like this :

Here you still have the main color idea, and in the same time you keep the grey tones. what do you think ?

I have to say that i agree with .::STRIKE::. and m@. ...50%, the other 50% of my opinion is hold back from only one question bothering my mind....soldiers have cuts on their armor..but i don't think they leave them to rust..!!!

I'm not sure but the hindges(the loops) joining the armor together, to me, seems to look superimposed. should there not be some build up of dust and dirt where they connect. and the armor is made to allow the soldier to run, would there not be wear and tear on the hinges, and scratches where they pivoted?

Great job Leigh.
Every project you work on just keeps getting better and better.
And it's nice to see some lightning, because I always thought some of your a bit older pictures on your site was to dark to see the actuall nice textures, you didn't have fill lights etc.

Well, this is going to rock so darn good!

Question: would you mind posting some of the painted texture maps, some small examples. I really wanna see how you made such great textures fit everywhere so good!

but it's great.. also why bother with desaturating in LW..

Thanks for all the comments/ crits/ suggestions everyone!!

Sorry there hasn't been an update in a while, but I've been busy writing...
Now it's back to this for a few days! :D

To address some questions/comments:

- the grey bits are the unrusted metallic bits. They need work, I know :p Hehehe
- the maps are all handpainted
- it's been desaturated now - should I destaturate even more?
- I added some slight changes in the areas around the little rungs.

Here is a teeny weeny update, to show where I am:

http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/images/elf_torso_10.jpg

--> I have started on the belts and buckles and stuff. Need to finish those off. Also need to adjust the belt models slightly, as they aren't fitting him too well.

--> After that, I will get back to the cloth, and then the skin.

--> I still need to finish the helmet.

--> I am going to adjust the unrusted bits on the torso to be less silvery.

hey leigh, ive been watching your progress on this awesome model for sometime (page 15 n on) and i must say, its been quite an eye popping experiance.

i thought i'd do the same.

but i was also curious, i love the cloth/texturing used on the dress of the btw, but you mentioned shredding it up some

is that going to be done around the base? or maybe im asking a stupid question lol.

otherwise ive been trying to look @ the model and find things to question, or give suggestions on improving, but i just cant lol.

Snakeman, Lord Of The Rings is the most widely read book in the English speaking world after the Christian Bible.
I think most people had heard of it before :)

I personally have ALWAYS been a fan :D
Apart from having first read the books as a little kid, I have an LOTR poster by Cauty on my bedroom wall that I have had for years and years - merchandise that predates the films :) That poster still looks awesome!
Most of my friends read the book when they were kids too.

So I think that most people did know the story from before :)

I think a lot of the appeal for the films was that people wanted to see if the films would portray Middle Earth in the way that we had always imagined it to look.

I will never forget the day, in early '99, when I first read in the local paper that a film was going to be made of the series. From that day forth, I waited with growing excitement to see them, and I even had my really high expectations totally surpassed!

your upset so many picked up on a great story?

what, is the story only for the few and the proud?'

edit:

i dont mean to start an argument by this either, i just feel that because i began reading the novels after the fellowship was was released in theatres, that im somehow not a true fan or something in which older fans, fans that predate the movies

(including the animated one, which how many can say they have and or watched [ i only say this because from what the people ive talked to they havent watched it so ive lent it to them]) stand apoun from the rest of the fans, that only started falling in love with this story after it was brought to film.

I love leighs work, i love the books, and the movies, and my friend has some other books ive only had the fortune of catching glimpses of. i dont see why you have to be angry.

is it because people may not have been fortunate enough to have heard of these books growing up like myself?
had i known about these i would have no dout read them.

PS. if this causes an argument, that was not my intention.

You've forced me (in a great way) to realise its not that you became a fan after seeing the movies that would bug me, but that someone who's interest came from the movies and never went very deap to trying to understand the story and the depth it has.

The skin is now transparent and cloudy, whereas before it was just a flat colour :)
It takes ages to render, so I won't post a new one just yet.

HOWEVER,

I am considering possibly texturing the skin to look like that of a dead body that has been in water - like the skin of the girl in The Ring.

Umm... this might sound a bit gross, but does anyone know where I could find pictures of drowning victims, or dead skin that has been bloated from water? (and DON'T say rotten.com)

Leigh, nice work as usual. Model and textures are super! However, the pose looks very unnatural. Kind of like a mannequin pose. And I think it's making your hard work on the details suffer. I mean, all that texturing to make it look real, but the pose just screams, "look at me I'm a 3D model" (or an action figure). I hope you can do something with that pose in the next couple of days.

I would have loved to have textured the skin to more detail, and posed him better (I really suck at that) but I am currently moving house, and am too busy with packing and sorting out bills and ten billion other things that I have not had time to get this done

So sadly I have to instead go through the chaotic hell that is moving residence, and just leave this last render as my final.
I'll finish it off properly next week or so, and put it on my site :)

To add to that, some bastard sent me a NASTY virus which has resulted in me having to remove loads of files from my computer which means I need to do a massive reinstallation of a whole lot of software :annoyed:

Assholes.

But anyway...
