View Full Version : Animation: shortfilm Magical Misfits
harly 01-10-2003, 09:17 PM Hello all again!
Thanks to those who already showed interest for this project.
Now Iīve managed to put it online :)
Magical Misfits is a story about a wizard and his daily troubles with his assistant, a little devil.
The film is created in Maya.
There are surely flaws, but I am so happy Iīve finished it in a decent time, because itīs my first short film.

Well, I had to watch it two times to really comprehend what was going on, not a good sign as far as the story goes. It seems that parts of it were rushed.
Ok, constructive comments:
1. Lip sync could really stand for a lot of improvoement.
2. The "environmental" sounds (like the birds and the thumping of the walk and the electrical noise of the thing on the table) were at the same volume as the voices so they were distracting and a bit confusing, espeically when the object making the noise was not in the shot.
3. All of the shots that required text reading were much to fast. The fancy font adds some reading time and they were too fast anyway.
4. The devil's scream and the fairys sounds sounded like they were all recorded by the same person, which is confusing because you can't really tell who is making what sound.
5. The first scene where the little devil is falling out the window of the tower. It is very hard to spot that if you don't happen to be looking there. There should be at least a little bit more zooming in towards the tower to focus the attention.
Other general things that I didn't understand:
1. Was the fairy laughing or coughing or crying, or what when the little devel grabed ahold of it?
2. Why was the fairy there in the first place. She is pretty, but dosn't seem to "fit".
Things I liked:
1. The devil appearing...neat effect.
2. The book flying through the air with its pages turning.
Hope that helps. Glad you saw it through to the end!

apart from the above mentioned...
the lighting and environment was great!!
yes the sound is a bit confusing, mabe you should decide which sounds should be dominant ; sometimes the sfx cover the dialogue... birds and bubbles are more dominant thathis could be easily edited
the lypsynch and animation however are the points to be really improved. merf's blendshapes only concentrates on the mouth; talking really involves a lot of squeeze and stretch to look alive, involve the other vertices of the face the faeie's wings could use some secondary action, they look too stiff.
not that i could do better, just suggesting what i see :)
the stoy is nice, and i like the demon effect too.
the site is cool too. does your work involve web design?
luv to see more works! ;)

I saw your stills posted a while back. So I was pretty excited to see your animation.
It was pretty good. I was a bit confused with the story, but thinking after the fact cleared it up :)
I enjoyed watching it and I can see why your so happy.
Congradulations.

that was very cool.
It's good to see some animation once in a while. Everyone seems to be so stuck on the stills these days. This is very inspiring work.
Peace,

actually I have to point out that I was the one who ****ed up the story and sound :)
the sound was recorded at one weekend in a home studio and the story is the product of an overnight programming session.
btw: the devil WAS spoken by 2 different people and the fairy is hoa's voice and a triangle (so much about your good ears, stephen2002 ;) )

Hey all, thanks for watching my film,
I am very sorry but I wonīt accept any critics concerning story and sound...I am not responsible for them, but I personally like s&s very much, my thanks and my love for elderic.
Concerning animation, yes , I told earlier that I am a beginner.
My experience in character animation is less than 3 months, so I am quite proud Iīve did the film, though...It was hard to keep
the schedule, I only had 4months completing everything -everyone who ever had made a short film on their own can understand me....
Now I am planning my next short film, Iīve learnt so much and
I am sure, there will be lots of improvements the next time...
Stay tuned.

Wow, for a first-time-short itīs very astonishing.
The editing, various camera positions etc. show that u really made your mind about how the effect of several angle would be.
Thatīs much better as some long camera motions in a scene, where nothing happens actually.
I think u did a graet job, not only on this, but also on the lighting.
Canīt wait to see your next one

Hey puuf,
your work has lots of atmosphere. The ambient of the study room or the overview of the palace, nice pictures!!
Perhaps the camera is a bit lame (german:träge)

this movie was really great.
It showed alot of strong strengths.
- the lighting was very well done,
- wonderful shots
- pretty good modeling and animation
the only thing I would say to change would be the length. I can think of many times in the movie where shots that you had didnt need to be there.. and speeding up several shots would have made the flow better. I think that all you really need to do is cut out half of the shots or speed alot of them up.
I didnt find it boring at all though, It was really interesting. But some times it was slow in parts. I would really think about cutting the time in half for sure.
Overall I loved the movie. You did a wondeful job!

Story and Camera Work were soft... BUT it looks like someone did a ton of nice modeling. Good job. It's not easy to create a world.
