doesn anyone know how to export a skinned and boned animated character to game formats such as Direct X, Quake MDL, etc.. i know C4D has a DX exporter, but it doesn't seem to export the animation data (especially a smooth skinned character, such as a snake or a human with facial expressions).

Thanks!

One of the best things might be that you'd request maxon to add animation in the directx export.
In fact, trueSpace (at least v4) can export directx animation. I've created a sample (just a robot walks with key pressing) using it but completely lost the file. If you have trueSpace, you may export it such that c4d -> VRML 2 -> trueSpace -> directx, I'm not sure though.

As far as web-style games, we could use Shockwave 3D and VRML 2 exports in c4d.

I hope this helps you.

H. Ikeda: not knowing a great deal about dx and yes i know i should rtfm but does this mean that you can't export animation via dx from c4d? surely this rules c4d out of game development in any real sense of the word....or does this just mean that game engines would get the animation but without dx support....confused:eek:

Well, although don't know much about game engines for realtime rendering, usually they might have development tools and/or scripting for animation, which are of course based on directx for windows games and other schemes for video games such as ps2.

And x files (not a movie title!) with animation are mainly for direct3d RM, which is easy to use but slow, and most commercial games use direct3d IM, more complicated pro mode of direct3d.

So it seems that the main concern about game support in c4d is now exporting objects and textures. The fewer polygons objects have, the better for game engines, as you know. For this purpose, PolygonReduction can be usable. And possibly efficient texturing using BodyPaint.

For LW, there seems a shareware converter 'lws2x', where textures are also automatically converted into ppm files. Unfortunately c4d doesn't have LW exporter (if does, we could c4d -> lws -> lws2x -> xfile with animation.) Also, direct3d SDK seems to include some converters.

I have no idea about smooth skin and facial animation, but I know some game deals with smooth skins (not sure about facial animation). In these cases, it may be nice that tools in game developments come to support c4d import.

Just thoughts...

Also, a converter app 'deep exploration' can be usable:
http://www.righthemisphere.com/dexp.htm

This can import c4d file, but its version seems to be v5...
This has also VRML2 importer and X exporter, so it may be possible that c4d-> vrml2 -> deep exploration -> x with animation.

For skinned mesh (bones) and blended mesh (morphing) in d3d, we'd need special plugns or converters, IMHO.
