Nice skin! On the character i really like the nose. Not to fond of the ears though. Mouth and eyes could use some more definition maybe and reference, the don't look as natural as the nose feature, I understand it's not realistic anatomy, but still I miss some eyelid and lip definition.

Would be glad to see your skin setup really like the GI in vray, (better then in MR for me) but controlling and setting up materials is an whole different story.

Hope to see an update!

thank you Roman ! your " boxeur Feminin " is amazinggg !:scream:

i updated some mesh in zbrush, reworked the skin and testing it with another hdr.( need to corrext some stretching uv's )
i must add a face light to cover the sss on the nose and ears.
when i finish this picture i will share the shader.

Really changing where you were going. It's a more mature and human character now, for me he has something of a french male. Whats your plan with him, maybe it's more easy to c&c then. Looks good thoug, mouth and eyes are better now!

Nice model but there seems to be a bump on the top part of the head good skin though.
By the way unknowngod430 (member.php?u=196026) you can render hair in mental ray if you start a new scene and set the render to mental ray then use the hair plugin to make the hair from scratch, if you import hair from another scene without that setting it wont work.

visionmaster2
06-08-2006, 09:42 PM
thank you hoodedpython.but what..a bump ? where do you see bump ? :) he's got a hat !

another test, with the same hdri but 2 transformations in photohop.
automatic color level and a black mask.
and No...he dont smoke a sausage :D
i cut the hand from masha's model with a big push option on it. ill zbrush them later with the bump head.
the mesh are not smoothed and the sampling is on medium.

more skin test on another mesh.
just to see if the shader work on another mesh and to testing the difference between object light, and vraylight.

mesh from facegen, speed rework in zbrush.
original color map from facegen ( 512*512 )
i dont have reworked the sss map ( so it's not correct for now on the ears, nose and eyes ).
rendering time 5mn/ frame.

It really works great on htese tests aswell, really solid look. Wondering if the 5 min render time could be lower, is it optimised or set for maximum result?

visionmaster2
06-14-2006, 03:26 PM
the render time could be optimized a lot. it's a heavy .obj directly imported from zbrush in rez 4.
i am a new zbrush user, and i tested some scene between zbrush and max, but the displacement map in max was not as great as in the original zbrush scene. so, because of that the object is really heavy in max about 65meg...
i must doing some more tests.

the second point the render could be optimized is the quality of the color map.
really bad and low. ( 512*512 and the other tests was made with a color map in 4096*4096 )
so, i decided to render this 4 images in sampling high in vray to incrise the render of the bump map.

i could optimize the hdr and blur it a bit to save some precious secondes.

thank for your comments Roman, and sorry for my english .

visionmaster2

little update with a better resolution.

the uv are to streched, the bump not correct.
no smooth on the object.

hey man
the skin test is coming out real nice. i see u have dof in it, did you render a z-channel in v-ray and then post production in photoshop? I having trouble rendering z-channel in vray and it never seem to come out. anyway, great model, can't wait to see more.

visionmaster2
06-17-2006, 09:19 PM
Thank you VanDerGoes and igami !!
the dof is the direct dof from the camera. no post z-depth. what is your problem with your dof in vray ?

i dont know if it can be call an update. but just for the fun, i wanted to test the skin in "extrem" situation. the hdri is cover with the room. so the skin dont recat as well as in the other scene. the polys are not smoothed to.

i have a little question.

i notice a big difference between my render in 3dsmax and photoshop.
my render is more black in 3ds. when i save the image and import it in photohop, its more lighter . i try with a screen capture of 3dsmax to import it in photoshop, and it's the same lighter image. could you help me please ?

Roman

I noticed such differences between both applications as well. Maybe it as to do with your colour profile in photoshop, you could play around with it under edit, colour settings. But you probably already did.

Ok i'm sorry for my english(i'll put it as signature) bye!

That have something to do with the gamma correction, i am not so sure about the details but if you set the gamma right within 3dMax, you should be able to get what you want.

the link is on rapidshare.de :

click free on the bottom of the page and wait for X secondes.
put the code
download and have fun !

it's a .rar file.

the mesh of the ear in 3dsmax 8 format
the skin shader.
the diffuse map
specular map
reflect map
facebump map
sss map.
i dont put the hdri. the name of it : rnl_prob.hdr

because of the new version of vray, the skin dont react in the same way than in the old.
but it works fine. i must try with the new sss control.
in this file the texture is too streched...but it's not a shader problem..it's me :)

you can adjust the pores of the skin with refract chanel. it's a noise at 0,02.

i am working on another scene with some skin shader to..but in MAXWELL

first test. only 25mn rendering ( that is not enough for maxwell )

Thank you very much for sharing your file with the community. I personally use Maya, but I can use this shader as a reference to create my own. Your Maxwell shader is looking very nice although it has grain on it and doesn't have the nice subsurface look you set up with Vray. I'm sure some adjustments can get it looking fantastic again :D

I think some of your pictures shows some of the best skin made with Vray. I think that also your modeling add to realism of the heads. How much did the Zbrush count ? You used Zbrush for all your heads model ?
Unfortunatelly , that max file on rapidshare was deleted. Can you post a new adress ? Your tutorial ? :)

Wow! Looking good man... I really like the shader - looks great. I love the little details like the fur on the skin... is it just a uniform thickness of light fur on the model to give that effect? Or did u actually paint on different thicknesses/densities throughout the face?

Well - Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more updates!

[i]EDIT: Problem fixed, the Diffuse map was offset by 0.01 in the material,I changed it to 0 and its all good now,I'm HAPPY as a Puppy :bounce::

hehe salut marc! genial ton shader! jvoulais juste savoir quelques petit trucs, par exemple, quece que ton shader a de plus sur le fast sss de vray? il marche tres bien mais je vois que tu utilise juste le material de vray et non le SSS , et aussi savoir comment le sub/multi object que tu utilise pour le fond de la bouche est appliqué pour que la zone noir soit affecté a la bouche est pas au reste, merci de ta reponse et continue ton bon travail!

"Can I just ask why you have made the reflection map purple coloured?"

why not ? :)

i made it purple, but it depend of the tone shading you want for your final render of your skin. it cool be yellow, red, blue or any other color you want. but yes it's to purple for this one.

Hi Marc,

Excellent shader by the way.

I tried a few different colours for the reflection map, some worked some didn't.

I rendered out a 100 frame revolve of the head, it flickered alot! I think this is down to the noise map...any suggestions to fix this?

I am getting a bit confused by what your maps are exactly contributing, can you describe each map for us, and say what it does? I wanted to try and make the skin look more shiny and sweaty, but not sure where to start?

One more question, because I am learning, Why have you not got a typical 'spec' map eg. A hard black and white map extra white around the nose, lips, eyes and forehead?

Thanks for all your help

Fleety

hey I love that skin mine is nearly there but takes forever to render, do you have a copy of that file that will work in max 8. or maybe just the vray mat? looks great. I think i could get a good few tips from it.

Great work, Marc.

I currently try a similiar approach in VrayforC4D and other render-engines and your work is very inspiring.
Thank you.

Here are some results with VrayforC4d.

The shader-setup in C4d is quite different and not perfect yet, but I think I am on the right way:

Hi, thanks to Marc for his model and settings. I made some changes to the original textures and add other derivatives. After making various combinations of materials I prefer the combination of a vraymt and vraysfastsss in a material vray2sideMt. Illuminated with a HDRI, vraylights for reflections and a vraysun. Sorry for my bad English

Disculpen por my mal ingles)

"This is sorta an old thread, so I doubt it's still being worked on "
Yes you have right ! i am working on a new one, with much much better quality...i hope :)
My new aproche will be multilayered map with linked lights. and All the map will be done by hand, no photos ( i have a new computer now...so i can play with good resolution map ..yahoo ! )

So now, i can give you the COMPLETE file :

The 3dsmax Head with all the setup and Map.
done with my old pc p4.....and 512ram. :)

preview of the direct rendering in max : what you see here is what you have in the file

And the 3dsmax file of it :

Feel free to post here, some test made with another mesh , or to post update of this shader to share better results.

Enjoy !
