Hello! :)

I'm trying to fix a old concept that I did years ago, now that I feel more confident working with Photoshop. I know I should start something fresh and new, but I don't really have the time, and I want to use this as an exercise to practice with the new brushes in CS.

I would appreciate your critiques please... mainly about the colors... I always get the colors wrong. :scream:

The only thing wrong with the colour in my opinion is that they are too dull, almost grey in some places, and there is little contrast.
If you raise the contrast a little the picture will have more life.
Nice work!

that's really nice. Yes the colours are a little dull but maybe you have yet to add shadows and highlights.
The character is very good drawed. Compliments, can't wait to see final image.

woo i remember seeing your showreel somewhere - great stuff. and you're from derby - that's pretty near me! (when i'm not at uni...)

anyway..this piece is well done, but as the others said, it is a bit flat. I think you could usefully put more volume into the hair and the clothing. Depending on what look you want, you could also get some folds and stress-lines in the clothing, too. You may also want to increase the saturation to bring out the vibrancy of the clothes, and add more vivid highlights once you've got the values sorted. Another thing that bugs me a little is the cane/staff thing; at the moment the structure isn't very clear. Finally the skin tone; it seems you've shaded with about three values; i think you could incorporate more values and add some secondary light or something to get a bit more subtlety and life into the hues of the skin, play with warms and cools more. keep it up! - it's a good design.

Hey, thanks for your comments! :)

pap87 you are right about the colors, i hope you like the new changes
dEDa thanks for your compliments!
audit hehe, I'm not from Derby, I'm spanish, but I've been living here for 5 years!! ... don't ask me why! :) Thanks for your comments and tips, I will think about everything you said. Not a bad critic for a musician!!

... and here are the new updates. I worked a bit more the background, saturate more the colors and try to decide where the light is coming from. I changed the lighting in the character, thinking about the red sunset, and I will exagerate the sadows even more in the face (like in the hand). I'm leaving details like cloth and hair for later.
What do you think? :)

Sure I won't ask, but i think you're the first person 'from' the midlands i've seen on CGtalk...

Yes, I like the changes, you're definitely working in the right direction with the colours. The face will need more defined shadows, you're right. Still, it seems to me like the light is coming from both sides of the character: virtually all the edges have rim-lighting, and it's a little confusing, since it implies the source is behind the figure, whereas i think you're light is coming in from the right? correct me if not. However, really like the tones and hues on that lower hand! it looks so much better.

...and btw musicians make great critics, we criticise each other all the time...

Hey, great design!. As they've said you before, higher contrast between the colors would fit really nice. And also, the background will keep difused or you will add more details? (i know it's not finished yet, but still..). Oh, I'm spanish too.

Pero no te he escrito esto en espaņol no sea que me vengan diciendo que escriba en ingles :D

Hi. I've been quite busy this last week, but I manage to do some more few changes today.... I'm worried now I've put the light comming from behind, and is probably going to be dificult not to loose the character face in to the shadows.... du know! :D
..let's see what do you think.
