Advanced Micro Devices may be looking to buy graphics company ATI Technologies, a move that would benefit the overall graphics industry, according to RBC Capital Markets.

"The synergies of this seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years," wrote analyst Apjit Walia in a note to investors Wednesday. "We believe ATI is a rare-buy in the semiconductor space right now given the near-term tie-up dynamics."

Walia based his prediction on recent checks in the PC food chain. RBC has an "outperform" rating and $23 price target on ATI, and no rating on AMD. The firm expects ATI to report fiscal 2007 earnings per share of $1.06.

considering AMD's longtime stance of not really competing with chipset developers... this would strain the (exceedingly valuable) relationship with Nvidia. AMD having a full fledged chipset division and graphics division would not make Nvidia a happy camper.

really, this would SUCK for the graphics and logic market.

I'm guessing that AMD is trying to do a whole complete system as opposed to relying on 3rd support for their products. After all having to exclusively rely on others in-order for your product to work is a bad idea IMO. If this happens do you really think nVidia will stop making their lucrative mobos just because AMD is using ATI boards to compete with centrino? I don't think so. Alot of things have to change at AT though, drivers have to be better written (for both linux and windows) and their mobos just aren't on par with nVidia's. Well interesting times ahead.

Conspiracy theory of the day:
nVidia would love the idea of having a competitor
whose main business is not graphics anymore...:twisted::twisted:

heh hopefully Apple will worry. A complete AMD hardware solution? Grab a Linux partner to make a bastardized FreeBSD OS a la OSX? Oh come on.. someone can at least laugh.
