View Full Version : post some steps of a sketch, share shading techniques
TheFirstAngel 06-01-2006, 04:29 AM ok, some asked for this, and i thought this might be a nice idea to start a thread on sketchingtechniques.
There's so many ways to approach an image, some do outlines first then build up a piece form there, others go with grascales first and sculpt it out, others might have their ways how to best and fastest rough out an idea.
I think its very cool to post a sketch, and show 4 (or even more steps) how you built it up. So others might get an idea what they havent done for a long time or not done before.
would be very cool if some of you join this thread and post some steps of a sketch :)

now here's howo i buiilt up this little sketch, i just was inspired by Sylanya's latest work and remembered having done something simular in aquarell a while back wich i gave away, and thought i reaproach the idea as a sketch. here's 4 steps how i done it :)
rough blocking, normal paint mode
http://www.angel3d.ch/content/digital_paintings/sketches/firewaves_01.jpg
shadow and light basecolors, soft and hard light paint mode
http://www.angel3d.ch/content/digital_paintings/sketches/firewaves_02.jpg
sharpen contours normal paint mode
http://www.angel3d.ch/content/digital_paintings/sketches/firewaves_03.jpg
final touches: set sharp highlights, colordoge up fx light and there's the final sketch. all painted with a hard round brush on shrinking diameter :)

Hi everyone!
I thought to start a thread where people can show there sketching technique.
Everyone can post tutorials and brushes and stuff in this thread.
Since I was asked several times to do some tutorials (still don't feel like I have enough experience for that.....) I thought I should start this thread.
I answered some questions in some sketchgroup topics but they get lost.
Nobody will search for the old threads to get some information. So I thought this
could be good as a sticky thread so everyone can share there knowledge at any time.
Thnx Roberto for the sticky feature!
So here are some of my files.

Here's my little attempt :) (from my own thread)
Stage 1. I usually don't save any stages before this because I'm running out of space on my comp. I think I have a screenshot somewhere though, I'll look for it. I cropped the image in the end so this version is slightly different.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/hiiri/raven1small.jpg
Ok, so here I use my regular round brush. Yea I'm one of those idiots who use it almost all the time. I just don't like to be hassled enough to look for the other brushes when I'm working. I whip out the texture brushes only much much later. Anyway, I've just laid down the basic colours in this one. I stopped doing line drawings a few months ago. It was too restrictive and I found myself colouring inside the lines which made the painting look very flat and boring. So now I just take a big brush and make an oval-ish blob on the canvas, paint the darks for the eye socket, the shadow under the nose, the upper lip and the shadow under the lower lip (like this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/hiiri/aldog.jpg))and take it from there.
Stage 2: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/hiiri/raven2small.jpg
Some more refining. I put in the stitched up lips on a new layer just to see how it would look (it's a fav. of mine!) but it didn't quite suit the image so I got rid of it. I'm going to use it in another image though, mwahah. Then on another layer I did some work on the eyes and the veins.
Stage 3:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/hiiri/raven3small.jpg Ok I just added some colour to the hair and highlights too (which weren't looking nice so I took them off later). I went back to the first layer (I don't work with more than 2-3 layers, it messes up my computer) and added more orange/yellow to it. Then I added the same colour on the second layer too (the one with the veins) just to integrate it with the first one. I could have erased it here and there, it would have looked the same but I prefer painting over.
Almost there!: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/hiiri/raven4small.jpg
Ok, here's where the refining/texturing begins. I hated the mouth so I changed it completely (I love this one! I always have a hard time drawing closed mouths, I'm very used to painting mouths that are slightly open) I finally decided on the highlights on the eyes . The background was too plain so I added really subtle texture and then painted over it, and again, and again. I used some crosshatching brushes to add some texture to the face, added some reds here and there. Also worked on the forehead a bit.
And the final! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/hiiri/raven5.jpg
Ok, that's that. I think it will be easier to see how I've gone from one stage to another if you open the stages in different tabs (if you're used a browser that supports it) and click through them.I'm terrible at explaining , I apologise for that.

Basic colours:

detail detail detail

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/ceinwah/arab4.jpg
ssssoo more details
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/ceinwah/arab5.jpg
I tend to do the background last, in a portrait piece such as this where it isn't the focal point but more abstract... I like clouds so it usually ends up being clouds.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/ceinwah/arab6.jpg
And the final touches (I love this bit best of all)

Since Sacha asked me a bit ago to contribute here I am using a current wip to post some steps. This is one of several illustration for the X-Box version of an Arcade Card Game. This going to be the red queen:
Rough sketch for the approval part. I don't really like sketching (since I am a lazy bum) but if you work with AD they need to have something to look at >_<
http://www.tascha.ch/tutorials/queen/queen1.jpg
I normally start blocking in colors very messy. Honestly, I still have a hard time finding the right colors and adjust them on the go. Here is an early step with defining the light/shadow environment and some rough colors. I already incorporate the background since it is important to make the characters colors work and pop:
http://www.tascha.ch/tutorials/queen/queen2.jpg
As always, I start working out the facial features first. I just really need them to make me want to go on painting. There are certain things I always use as pointers in any painting (highlight on the nose and inside the inside corner of the eye, darker parts undernath the eyes to shape the underlaying form, for example)
http://www.tascha.ch/tutorials/queen/queen3.jpg
Now, since I know it's better, I don't tend to finish the face completely before going to work on other parts. It's still quite rough and I only used the hard edged round brush with flow set to pen pressure until now. I vary the size a lot though. For blocking in it's good to use the brush tip quite bigger then you think you would need it. It also helps with creating a base for the blending. I picked a rather dramatig red for the start of her clothing. This is going to be more painterly and stronger colors since it is for a card illustration.
http://www.tascha.ch/tutorials/queen/queen4.jpg
More rough tryouts - I just paint until I see something evolve. I always have an idea but let the brush do most of the work until I see something I can work with for more details.
I also decided to have her hair up in some kind of side buns to create a more "royal" look.
http://www.tascha.ch/tutorials/queen/queen5.jpg
Now that I have the general colors and idea for the whole painting I go back to the face and work in more details. I added freckles (I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE freckles :D) with my special sprinkle brush, used the hard edged brush with both size and flow set to pen pressure to give special areas more weight and clearness. I also started to "model" the darker part in her hair a bit more. It's quite important to also have all different kind of values in the darker part to give it more depth.
http://www.tascha.ch/tutorials/queen/queen6.jpg
I know start to color pick from the face and adjust them with the HSB slider. Make the shadows a bit more saturated where they need to be (like the darker part of her nose, lips and so on). I know try to remember all the theory. Add a bit more blue to the inside of her eyes and on parts where the skin is thinner. It's probably quite hard to see, though. I also colorpick colors from the face and use them on her collar for example. This is a good way to "bring" the painting together.
http://www.tascha.ch/tutorials/queen/queen7.jpg
Here you see the changes on her face. The colors are a bit stronger now due to the changes I mentioned earlier. I also started to add some more additions to her hair and clothing.
http://www.tascha.ch/tutorials/queen/queen8.jpg
This is where I am at the moment - after about a day of work. Some more dramatic darker shades on the face give her a slightly evil touch. I started to work some more on the hair and started to rough in some of the clothing's shading.
To create a bit of depth specially for the hair: I rough in the overall shape, use the eraser tool with the hard edged brush or sometimes the airbrush to create the edges and curls and then use the blur tool (not the filter) to blur special parts out. I use that tool quite a lot to create depth.

The leaves were rendered in roughly three stages.
For the basic folliage I used one of the custom photoshop leaf-shaped brushes. I decreased its roundness at about 20-something%; Slightly angled. Size jitter is optional; minimum size diameter at 30-40% angle jitter around 10%. Scattering, both axes, ca. 250-300%. Other Dynamics: Opacity and Flow at Pen Pressure. All these values can vary of course.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/eilidheln/wildburn_br1.jpg
I went on erasing and blurring some of the edges here and there to remove the stamped like effect; I next switched to Painter, where I used the Pepper Spray from the Airbrush menu, with the feature slightly increased (so as to have larger specks). I kept my pen tilted so as to have a larger spread. This was used relatively sparingly and I erased a lot of it once I came back to Photoshop.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/eilidheln/wildburn_br2.jpg
(50% original size)
Photoshop again, blending in; not just black or dark colours now, but also colours I picked from the sky and environment, or intermediate tones. The brush is a standard hard round brush, roundness decreased at about 50%, slightly angled. I changed the angle several times while painting -- this was the same with the leaf-shaped one. Size jitter about 30% (Control: Pen Pressure), Angle jitter 14% (Control: Off), Scatter: both axes, ca. 500%; Other Dynamics: Opacity and Flow at Pen Pressure. Again, I'd periodically adjust these, especially scattering.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/eilidheln/wildburn_br3.jpg
Hope this is clear enough. :)

Sasha - that's a really great idea to to start this thread :)
Tascha - I've got to say - I don't paint as wonderfully as you :banghead: - but I have to say I have some pretty similar problems and habbits while painting. I do too focus on the face while painting, I have trouble adjusting colours so I do it with the help of HSB sliders, I love freckless and the depth-blurr effect :) Will you be posting Red Queen on DA as a separate, finished piece?
Great thread. I love the workflow.

Hello everyone,
I made some captures while working so here is a little step by step.
Placing basic color over all the body just to get an idea of the light
and shadows.
First, I paint the character with round basic brushes, Usually ona colored
background. Notice the color samples on the left to set the skin tone I want
to use.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step01.jpg
Smoothing the shapes and colors.
I do not use the zoom at this stage, in fact I will try not tu use it until
the last steps.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step02.jpg
Create the surrounding light and environment
Here again, just place big color strokes to get an idea of what will be around the character.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step03.jpg
Building the forest
Using custom brushes, I build the trees and leaves
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step04.jpg
kaladen
02-27-2007, 03:01 AM
Enlight the background
I place some light effect such as glows, atmospherics in the background and bright spots here and there to create volume and depth. I add details to improve the depth of field.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step05.jpg
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step06.jpg
Still improving the depth by adding details to the hair (still without zooming)
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step07.jpg
The armor and the clothes
Ok, let's begin to talk seriously, like I did for the body, I paint the armor
with basic brush and quite big round color strokes.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step08.jpg
kaladen
02-27-2007, 03:02 AM
Working on the reflections and highlights of the brushed metal.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step09.jpg
The clothes are done using the same technique. Notice that I changed the levels of the background. This is just an adjustment layer that I use to set the black level to a dark grey.
This allows me to clearly see what black part belongs to the character and what part
belongs to the background.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step10.jpg
Sometimes I put a flat colored layer to rest my eyes a bit. This will not
appear in the final image, it's only to get some comfort while working.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step11.jpg
Adjusting the back ground and set the approx settings of light to get an idea
of what it looks like. Adding details to the character. I usually paint the accessories
during this step. In fact if I see that some parts will be in the shadowed areas,
I will not add too many details to savesome time.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step12.jpg
kaladen
02-27-2007, 03:03 AM
Finishing the image
Here come the details, Here I use many kind of brushes, especially if some textures
are needed.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step13.jpg
Here is a very important part of the work.
I add shadows and lights again to incorpore the character into the environment.
This is also the step where I work on "radiosity fake rendering" .
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step14.jpg
Adding details again and painting the foreground.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02wip/step15.jpg
Ok that's it, then I work on some details, (just the parts that need to)
Finally, I make a last setting on lights transparency and color adjustments.
This is to create a better overall lightning.
Here is the final Image.
http://www.gorkovan.be/cgtalk/wip/darkelfe02.jpg
That's it, keep paint, all of you, cause i see so many good things here.
Greetings to all,
Kal.

Can you elaborate on it being unfinished? I'd like to know what areas of the painting you're referring to...
kaladen
03-03-2007, 11:31 AM
In fact, that's true you can say "it looks unfinished" but let me remind you that the purpose of this was to share techniques that I use, I did this especially for this thread. I am working on speed techniques and custom brushes combined with basic brushes, everything without using the zoom to quickly get a good overall aspect and then finishing by details, wich in this case was not the main purpose.
Next time I will post a complete step by step with an accomplished final image, that's a promise.

I think you're talking about texture brushes that are used for skin, hair, metals or cloths, walls, natural wood, etc right? That's a great question. Are there any tutorials or anyone willing to share their different brushes and what effects they try to get with each?
TheFirstAngel
03-19-2007, 08:08 PM
Kaladen: thanks for this fantastic post, very cool :D
MarciahL: texture brushes can be extremely useful but i think every artist has his own ways to use them. in my case, i usually use texture brushes in 2 main stages:
1 stage, all values are more or less in place and i want certain timeconsuming thngs like dragonscales, armortypes like a chainmail or something else with repetative patterns. then, i make a brush for this or pick one i already made to upspeed the progress.
phase2: the very last moment to use textures is when you're finishing your work and want to break up some of the specular highlights add structures like fabric or micro bumps on metal rocks or cellular highlights on skin.
A good way to do that, drop your historybrushs mark on the actual stage, then use the historybrush with your texture you want to add on multiply, screen, hardlight or colordoge as you like to add some texture in the illuminated sections. whenever you feel you overdone it, switch back to normal paint mode on the history brush and paint back the original smove surface.
Another good way is just paint the texture on a new layer, erase what you don't need of it, drop it. pick any blendmode for the layer as you like. this works well for atmospherics, reflections or whatever you like to have full controll over in general, a technique i use quiet often.
And texture rule in general. Only add texture where you want to have your focal point. the piece gets busy very fast when you overdo the texturing. only boost the contrasts where you want the major attention of the watcher. hope that gave you some clues :)

thanx for the reply angel. I got a little smarter :)
Generelly I suck at drawing.. just trying to get better, doesnt do me any good though. I never get good at drawing perspective. :) Everything just fail when I try draw a human from any point of view.
unfortenly I dont have so much time to practice. I only sit down with it once or twice a week.
I went trough this post when I was kinda trying to learn from drawing. Watching how others do it. A lot of good posts here. Ill just keep it up and maybe Ill be better some day :P

Here's a 1 hour sketch I did recently, I created a video at the same time to show how it was created. Thought it might fit this discussion neatly.
http://www.thedogfromthefuture.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/b-movie_bug1_sml.jpg
My technique - as you will see in the vid is a fairly standard light and shade technique - the same you probably did at school when learning light and shade on a ball. It didn't come out quite as I hoped so I called it a b-movie bug.

FirstAngel, thanks for those awesome screencap sessions you posted! I was following along pretty well until I realized...you were opening the color picker with a shortcut. Could you tell me me the hotkey, or did you have to set it yourself? That would save me a ton of time going back to the palette every time, and I couldn't seem to find it in the photoshop shortcut thread...thanks! :D (Also, I hope I didn't just imagine this out of some subconcious idea due to the sped up cursor jumping around!)

Its kind of a pain in the butt to set up because you have to use a third party program to do it, you can't move the tools palette, and it doesn't work in fullscreen (tab) mode when the palettes are hidden... but... heres how you do it:

The elf is not even half finished and I'm planning on doing away with alien arms coming out of his head because originally the image was going to be apart of a bigger concept piece (you can see some of the other characters I was going to work on in the top sketch) but unfortunately as of the moment I do not have time to pursue this so the lone elf will have to do. I'm quite happy with the elf so far because it is the very first time I've tried digital painting and creating an image without the use of black/colour lines to hold the design together, my work is normally flat bright cartoons with no shadow or texture at all, example here:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1433/749957285_ffdd02efb7.jpg
The Elf was done in Photoshop Elements using a tablet. I worked from my original sketch which I first coloured in in flat base colours (you can see the body and hair is still presently in this cartoon looking state) and then I proceeded to shadow, light and colour in the details. I worked on seperate layers, duplicating the layer each time I wanted to add something new such as shadow or light. I left the original lineart in and just work up to them, eventually painting over the top of them and blending'em out as I get to'em. To help I took some photo's of myself pulling the expression of the character to self as references for shadows and proportions of the face. It took a couple of hours to do, quite long really but because it was my first and so I took my time, anything I do next will probably be done in half the time.
If I'm happy with the final design I am planning on making a more in depth tutorial of my progress if it would be of any use to anyone else.

Hi everyone...
Well I'm pretty new at this...& amateur too...so I'm just walking my first steps in photoshop/wacom painting...
I'd like to share with you a WIP of what could be a funny death character...
first with no background, & then with a downloaded background, just to set up an environment...
http://features.cgsociety.org/gallerycrits/265065/265065_1197640558_large.jpg
I know there's a long way to go from here, but you have to start somewhere...
Please critique!!! Be as mean as you can be!
Most of the work around here is pretty intimidating...
Later on I'll post some steps of this...

Hey!
First of all: Great thread! helped me a lot!:buttrock:
Many thanks to Kaladen for his great work. This was very usefull.
One Question: Did u use your bruches on 100% opacity all the time?
I could imagine that it would be very hard to create smooth transitions this way.
And i really want to know how create custom texture brushes :D
Looking forward to see more great stuff here!
(and i apologize for my terrible english)

Ello, great thread!
This is a 1.5 hour speed paint for a client but I want to go back into it one more time based on forum crits. Feedback and hard crits encouraged! :)
A) Quick application of colour and basic mountain shape (I used the polygon select tool for this) in photoshop.
http://www.nathanmckenna.co.uk/firefly/redeyefortress_A.jpg
B) Imported it into ArtRage2 and put in some textured line work. Really easy to do this, very nice and intuitive program.
http://www.nathanmckenna.co.uk/firefly/redeyefortress_A2.jpg
C) Back in photoshop now, adding some soft clouds trying to pull directional focus with my strokes.
http://www.nathanmckenna.co.uk/firefly/redeyefortress_A3.jpg
D) On a new layer I add some block shapes for the foreground, this will be a bridge leading to a tower. I used the polygon select tool again for most of this.
http://www.nathanmckenna.co.uk/firefly/redeyefortress_A4.jpg
E) Started adding in details - looking back I should have defined depth more by making the tower lighter.
http://www.nathanmckenna.co.uk/firefly/redeyefortress_A5.jpg
F) I had to add in another tower for this job - why didn't they tell me at the start!? So I did that really quickly but you can see how much further away it looks just by making it lighter or allowing some of the background colours fade over the top.
http://www.nathanmckenna.co.uk/firefly/redeyefortress_A6.jpg
G) Final touches. I'm pretty happy but still with problems:
The mountain looks too high in contrast, needs to fade out more and this is ruining the composition - the tower and the mountain seem to be fighting for focal attention.
Have I overdone that bloom on the left there? Is bloom the new lens flare? ...NO! ..NOOOoooo!
I'm not so good at perspective and I didn't measure up for this one, so not sure if that feels right.
Is it too dark?
http://www.nathanmckenna.co.uk/firefly/redeyefortress_A7.jpg
thanks for reading.

Been a while since I've been here, but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. Anyway, I did a timelapse video (http://angryartmonkey.blogspot.com/2009/01/doctor-doom-md.html) of this sucker so you can see how it was drawn. Did this on my Nintendo DS with Colors! (it's a homebrew painting program).

Wow, you guys are AMAZING!
You all make it looks so easy, but I think ti's probably not.
The way you guys blend the colors together like a real painting, is that just a combination of semi low opacity brushes and color sampling?

This work flow seems to work really nice, I started this yesterday, and finished it early this morning. I got it from one of the Gnomon digital painting tutorials, I invite ANY newcomer to digital painting to try it out, this is my first creature design and I think it came out pretty nice for a first attempt.
