I love keyboard shortcuts. They make everything immensely faster.

I customized my shortcuts so that all of my most used shortcuts are under my left hand. This way I usually don't look at my keyboard. To orient myself I keep my pinky finger on the "j" key which has a little knob on it. My other three fingers rest on the "i o p" keys, and my thumb goes on the "Command" key. When mastered you can paint, move, and select almost as fast as you can think.

Here are a few often used shortcuts:

top row
y history brush
u stamp tool
i erase*
o move*
p brush*
[ decrease brush size*
] increase brush size*

Middle Row
h healing brush
j marquee*
k smudge
l lasso*
; previous brush*
shift ; first brush*
' next brush*
shift ' last brush

Lower Row
, default colors
. switch foreground background colors
/ toggle transparency lock

Press "Command" plus
u hue saturation
i undo (step back)*
o open
p print
[ send layer back
] send layer forward

h hide*
j layer via copy
shift j layer via cut *
k redo ( step forward)*
l levels
; show/hide guides

z alternately undo and redo
m curves

Press "Command Option" plus
i invert selection*
o deselect*
j select all*

Press "Command Control" plus
8 Rotate canvas counter cw
9 Rotate canvas cw
0 Rotate canvas 180
- flip canvas horz
= flip canvas vert

Press "Command Control Shift" plus
8 Rotate layer counter cw
9 Rotate layer cw
0 Rotate layer 180
- flip layer horz
= flip layer vert

* shortcuts I use constantly

No doubt everyone has their own preferred way of working in Photoshop. However if you feel like changing, I can't recommend this configuration highly enough.

Right on, thanks for sharing. Personally I've been accustomed to Photoshop's normal key commands for so long it'd be difficult for me to relearn them. I'm sure plenty of others will find this helpful.

The only pain in the butt for me is that I use Photoshop at work on a Mac, but I have a PC at home. Every time I try to use the one at home the stinkin windows start menu keeps poping up.
I'm tempted to take a screwdriver and pop that rotten thing out.....sorry for rant.

Anyway, that is a pretty good setup, but in my case it would just cause more confusion.

Thanks for the heads-up bopuc, that helps greatly

I actually love that Windows key: win+E (explorer), win+F (find), win+A (PS hot launch) win+Z (Chameleon folder)... few move so fast through their folder and application structure as me. http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

So basically, try and work with it & say hello to Capt. WinKey.

I don't understand. Why do lots of pros use it? It's basically developed for gaming and I don't see any real advantage for Photoshop users, unless I'm missing something Denart. :)

Are you kidding? I love my nostromo! My favorite option is the wheel button that I set to brush size. (the "[" and "]" keys.) My heart melted the first time I tried that, and I never turned back. It makes my painting experience more intuitive and efficient, and has paid for itself many times over. True, macros can be customized like Flair did, but I still find the pad more convenient than the keyboard.

Think outside the box. :)
While it was developed and marketed as a gaming peripheral, all it really is at heart is a remappable "keyboard". To that end, you can set up individual profiles for your applications, mapping your most-often-used commands to it (heck, you might be able to map all of them, since with 3 additional "shift states", you can essentially map 144 commands, iirc). These need not even be limited to keystrokes, since you can also program macros and assign those to the buttons.

Nice keys, except when you have a non US keyboard.
We here have AZERTY and [ and ] are AltGr keys, meaning that neither Photoshop nor Intuos wants to accept them. Many keys can be set or changed, but not these. At least: I haven't found out how. (CS2).
Perhaps any of you knows how?
