hi all. i have a nurbs patch model that curreently has all of its normals facing inward. this is causing a problem with fur. would i be better off reversing the direction of the fur or of the actual surfaces. i am not really sure of the effects of having my surfaces inwards or of reversing them when in comes to further texturing and animation. it would be great if someone could fill me in. BTW, is there a way to ensure that all patches are facing the same directio nbesides showing the normals. thanks

$ Yes, always let the normals pointing out!

$ If you use the Maya renderer , you'll probably wont get problems. Some renderers only render one side of the surface. Besides that it's cleaner if everything is the same.

$ Display=>Nurbs Components=>Surface Origins. Just keep your reverse direction box open. Also select all Nurbs surfaces and uncheck double sided in Window=>General Editors=>Attribute Spread Sheet and hit the render tab. The invisible surfaces have normals pointing inwards ;)

Rather than start a new thread I dug this one up.

I'm trying to get my normals together, but I have one nurbs surface that the normals are not reversing on. I am getting no errors, but the normals are not turning. What can cause this, anyone?

And also - Can I remedy this? I spent many hours on this surface. I don't want to have to trash it.

Ok, If anyone ever has the same problem the remedy is simple. Duplicate your nurbs surface, reverse the normals on your duplicate surface, and delete the original. Use your new surface. :p

can you post the error message... and can you export the selected surface as a .ma file... and put it somewhere on the server?

I think you missed my last post. I found a fix for it. Also in my initial post I said there were no errors. It was just not reversing the surface direction or some reason.
