Hi all,

No brainer Maya Q which none the less foxes me. How I can I hide a couple of joints in a rig but NOT their children. It seems visibility is inherited from parents, but I don't want this to happen!

Hide the shape node of the object. Go into the hypergraph or outliner and tell it to show shape nodes and select it and hide it.

it's a joint - it doesn't have a shape node.

You can turn of Joint display for that viewport to make all joints disappear. Or you can point/orient/scale constrain the child to the bone instead of parenting it. Then you can hide the joint and the "children" will remain visible because they aren't actually children of that heirarchy.

Generally we keep joints hidden in the interface, and only have splines visible for selecting. If you do have to have a bone selectable, you can hide them and turn on the handles for the bones that you need to grab (though we avoid this now because you can't tell one handle from another... they are all little plus signs).

Hope this helps,
