View Full Version : WARNING: lotr ring.
lazorwolf 01-10-2003, 11:00 AM just looking for some comments and suggestions on this. i know it's over done and simple and so on.
i'd eventually like to place it in a nice scene inside bag end. maybe with a map of middle earth and other neat things.

I should make scene for it... Exam. Wooden table where ring lies and somethin envrioment to background... so we can see your material reflection better and add skylight and one spotlight

These may be simple to do, but if like me you are a learner to all this 3d malarky; then its fun and also a lot can be learned from the texturing and lighting side of it.
Ok first off the ring is not deep enough, needs to be wider on the z, and not so much of a curce at the top and bottom rims. I have attached my WIP (hope you dont mind), its far from perfect but shows the shape of the ring, also the text on the side is not (as far as I am aware) etched into the ring, simply written onto it, so no need for a bump map (although I could be wrong, but i didnt see a need for one).
I found that the default max gold metal works well, although change the reflection map to raytrace and within add a environment map.
One other thing that is incorrect (on mine also) is the squiggly lines at the start and the end of the text, these appear in the book but not on the ring, although again i could be wrong.. anyway I will shut up now, hope these ramblings help.

yeah, since i am a pretty much a beginner, and working out the textures on that thing was a pain in the ass. i still can't figure out how to map the inside...but oh well! i agree that the ring isn't deep enough on z axis, i'll change that soon. also, the writing is in fact engraved into the ring. i think the lines are there too, but i could be wrong.
ps. how did you make your writing glow like that? it is a fabulous effect, i have been trying to figure it out. can you give me a little help?

Sure no problemo,
First off I generated the writing texture, and coloured the writing a deep red (on a black background). I put this in the 'Diffuse map' (of my slightly altered metal_dark_gold map) as well as in 'Self-llumination map'. Now in the map for the Self-llumination click on "Output" (found at the bottom of the rollout) and then enable "Enable Colour map", in here you will now be able to increase/decrease the high and low scale points (the high point will increase the brightness of the text-making the text glow, and the low point will darken/lighten the gold effect).
No doubt there are much easier ways to do this, but this was how I acheived it, through simply experimenting. Let me know if this works for you :)
There is no text on the inside of the ring though is there.

yep :) check out the below, not the best shot of the ring, but it shows writing on the inside as well :)
hmmmm....guess I missed that....thanks for the heads up...
need to stretch it a bit more along the Y axis :) and obviously change the material to gold :) personally I'd place it on a chain in snow from when frodo falls down for no aparent reason :p (still cant believe he could drop it there and not when that octopus thing in the mines lol) like to see it in a nice bag end scene tho :)
