Hi i am a digital animator, about to graduate from the University of Hertfordshire. This is my short film called "Migration." It is about a family of caterpillars that have to cross a road with a little lively twist at the end. It is being shortlisted for the 3D Film Festival held at the University of Hertfordshire on Friday 16th June.

As there is still time to tweak bits, i am posting it up to get as much feedback as i can within the next two weeks. Please leave your comments, every comment is helpful. Thanx guys.

Sorry, nothing really to say about the film, looks very nice though. Haven't watched it yet.

But, I can't understand why you didn't post the original link to the film ( http://www.jonathansymmonds.com/migrationfilm.mov) you have on your website.

At least I visit the animation-forum once a week and 'cause there's always thousands of new threads since I last visited, I tend only open a thread, drag the film-link to my GetRight and leave. And when my computer is idle, I let it download the whole list at once. And I believe a lot of us tends to act that way. If the film is very interesting, then I search the thread again, and comment on it. And if the film is absolutely great, I start to search everything that dude has ever made in his life and enthusiastically wait everything he releases.

I believe these 'free-hosts', streams and definitely broken links are the most important thing that keeps people not to interest in some threads.

cheers,
mj

That sendspace site doesn't work. When I click on the download link, it says "no free spots available please wait", I wait, another link appears, same message.

I'm downloading now from your site, but I'm on dialup, gonna be ~6 hrs to download. I'm only getting 3.3k a sec, if the higher speed connections are getting the same, that might be why you're not getting any feedback, (nobody wanting to wait that long).
Do a search here for "mirrors" or "web sites to host videos ..etc", I don't know what the best (free) one is.

How long is the movie ? What's the res?
Do you have a lower res version?

Maxon and Mike thanx for your posts, i am struggling at the moment to find a suitable free hosting site or even a mirror to host my film, it is 77 mb, if i try to go any lower the qualtiy gets really bad, The res is 720 x 395 which is a smaller widescreen version for the web. If you know or anyone knows of any good sites to host my film please shout! Thnx.

The sendspace.com site has run out of bandwidth. My film is being downloaded too many times, and i run out of bandwidth.:(

Thanx for your comments, i am trying to upgrade my website for bigger bandwidth at the mo so hopefully i will have a nice link soon! :)

Hi Nojule...took a look and have the following feedback for you.

I like the appearance of the title fading into the road. I also like the camera movement at this point and wish it could be held a little longer so that as it follows the road and then pan onto the characters making it one long shot. At the moment you cut to a view of them and it takes away the energy you've already built up with the first shot.

Overall I think a bit more extreme animation is needed on the eye expression of the characters to help convey the danger and risk of the situation. Probably more movement in the brow area would help also.

I enjoyed the story you built up until the end and thought the very end, where the green catepillar appeared as a butterfly felt like a bit disconnected. I thought you were going to do something with the bird that you had established in the previous scene. Maybe have him swoop down and grab the others or something.

Also I wouldn't mind seeing the worms scaled down some more to emphasize the danger of crossing the road and convey the hugeness of the cars.

Keep at it!

>The res is 720 x 395 which is a smaller widescreen version for the web.

Well, 720x395 is not reall a "smaller web version", 320x240 is more like it, and will make the file I'd image at least half the size. Ideally offer the movie in 2 or 3 different sizes.

Granted, I'll assume most serious artists/producers etc, are on high speed :)

Another thought about "free hosting" :

Presumably you just spent (or borrowed !), a bunch of $$$ on your CG education. I would recommend to you or anyone else in school, to budget a few $$ more ... and it really is just a few compared to tuition costs, for a quality high speed web site/provider where you can showcase your work and have it as your initial contact point.

Again, I'm on dialup, and mabye your site/provider *is* in that category, I apologize in advance if it actually is.

I initially had the same experience as Maxon, I dumped the first link you listed into getright, and went on to something else, but I was still on my p.c. when Getright complained about not finding the file.

Even if you're the greatest artist in the world, it won't help you get work if no-one knows about you :)

Finally, I'm just an interested hobbist, so don't think that I'm an executive from one of those "big" companies :) :)

Hi everyone, please take a look at the new version of my film, it is on the same link as before. I took into consideration your views and thanks a lot because they were all really helpful, the twist at the end was a great idea, and i used the bird more (It flies around the scene now)

The change to the evening shot is better and more understandable.
I hope you all enjoy watching this, please leave a comment if you did.

The film was entered into A film festival, and was runner up for the BEST FILM OF THE YEAR award, and the funniest film. The judges were members of Framestore and DOuble Negative, alongside Autodesk and many others.

Take care everyone, thanks for all you help, it really paid off in the end.

Jono :)

You did improve the ending by giving the bird a purpose. The bird's shadow looked very good too. I'd like to see it in the same quality as the first.
