Title: Farewell Kiss
Name: Michael Dashow
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

Hi, all! This is my finally-completed entry for the just-ended CG Challenge, the theme for which was 'The Journey Begins.' (But everyone knows that already, right? It's kind of hard to miss...)
If you're interested in process and close-up shots, you can see at least a few pages of the steps involved in the CG Challenge thread here:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=322580&page=1
But the short version is line art in pencil, a little 3D work to work out some of the shadow placement, and painting all in Photoshop. 10 weeks of sporadic work overall.

:wavey: from your fangirl!

I really like how this one turned out, but then again you knew that. :D Hope you get yourself another trophy with this one and a win in the challenge, you deserve it.

How's the brainbots coming along? I sense a lack of work in that area!

Walrus (showthread.php?t=322580) Lovely entry. Detail, atmosphere, storytelling...

What can I say? Good, good, good.
Where is the 10 star button? Ouch only five?

DamonDuBois
05-31-2006, 01:26 AM
Outstanding. Easily 5 stars.

IMHO it's all incredibly well done. The color, lighting, composition, technical execution, style, everything. I'm hard pressed to see any area where this image could be improved.

This is tight, I love the colors and those rune looking things in the background. Worthy of Fives Stars.

Aha, finally see your entry on the finished thread, Mike! Great work here and it is quite insightful to see how this work is being produced from scratch. Thank you for sharing so much with all of us and then some!

I hope we can continue our God-Ray scourging (as TheresaClip put it) during the next challenge! It was a lot of fun! :D All the best to you for this challenge!

Thanks folks! I appreciate the kind comments!

Bob - we missed you this challenge, hopefully you'll have a month or threee free next time around to participate!

Theresa - I plan on getting back to Brain-Bots soon, but have been sidetracked by a vacation (yay!), in illustration I'm doing for the Sierra Club, and updating my web-site. And add to that the fact that the last time you commented on that thread, you thought the characters were out of perspective, so now I have to build 3D models and position everything and make sure they're all at the right perspectives. Whew!

Jerome - Yeah, this wa a fun one. Hooray for the God-Rays club!

flyingP - I'm glad I went with the bird, it really gave me a change to lighten up the picture witha face like that!

Aly - Sorry you weren't able to join us all the way through this time, maybe next one...?

frameless - your favorite? wow, thanks! I hope the judges agree with you! ;)

and eveyone else - thank you all as well, too!

Walrus,

Every year you reach a higher level of mastery. I learn more from your WIP threads than any other. Thanks for showing so much of your workflow.

And though you escaped the dungeons of Blizzard looong ago, and it has absolutely nothing at all to do with this gorgeous image, any chance that one day you can put together a making of the modeling and texturing of your Barbarian Diablo game characters? From start to finish, mind you. No skimping. :)

Of course, after the Sierra Club is finished with you, The Elks will call, then the National Geographic Society. Audobon and McCall's. Grrrr. :banghead: Stupid paying clients. They're hawgin' all your knowledge and talent.

Anyway, your work is a pleasure to study. Thanks for all the details and explanations. :buttrock:

ambient-whisper - What a fun surprise it was to log on this morning and see 2 lovers and part of a bird up above the forum listing. Thank you so much for plugging this image, I am very honored!

ravioli-rancher- Thanks for the support. 'Fraid there's zero chance of my putting together any kind of step-through on and Diablo II art asset creation. All of those properties are owned by Blizzard Entertainment, and any kind of behind-the-scenes look at that art would have to be with their permission... which I somehow doubt they're going to give to an ex-employee. They also tend to be strict about that sort of thng, I wouldn't have been able to do that when I worked at. At one point I had (with permission) a ton of concept art from dead projects up on my site, and then they changed policies to not allow me to have that up any longer either. Oh, well!

And as for the Sierra Club project being a paid gig... guess again! I do that work pro bono, it's my way of volunteering in some other way besides just giving money, because I believe in their cause.

lildragon (and anyone else who is interested) - I have desktop-scaled versions of this image on my website, at http://www.michaeldashow.com/downloads.html#farewellkiss. If that's not large enough, Ferocitas above posted a link to a larger image.

everyone else - Sorry I don't have time to reply to each individually but there are only so many ways to blush and say thank you. So thank you everyone, for checking my piece out and for your kind comments!

Walrus,

Thanks for at least considering it. Corporations are scary beasts. Take take take. Course, I was asking the same of you, only for free.

I'll follow your lead, and just figure out for myself.

You're an exceptionally generous artist. Knowing that you share your talent for a cause you believe is yet another sign of your mastery and professionalism.

Thanks for the response and looking forward to your brain-bots color cycle.

Paint like you own the Sierra Club (and while we still have a wilderness for references.) :buttrock:

Anyhow, thank you everyone for the kind words and comments!
Frikimon, I used to be an animator years ago, but not recently. But still, some of the old animation skills - like making strong silhouettes for characters - are just as an important part of illustration as well.

Cheers, all, and Happy New Year!
