.. and for volume lights in Maya and MR!
Unfortunately, there aren't many tutorials for Maya Volume Lights and even less for MR Volume Lights. Not even on the Alias Learning Maya - Rendering book. I would be interested in the subject too.

I am sorry, I can be a bit slow sometimes, but I thought the question was about volume lights, not volumetic light effects. Anyway, for light fog in MR, there is another way, if you don't want to fill the entire scene with a volumetric material and I got it from the book "Learning Maya 7 - The Special Effects Handbook".

1) Create a regular Maya spot light
2) Under the Mental Ray tab, find Custom Shaders. Set a mib_light_spot as light shader.
3) Click Light Fog to create a cone of fog.
4) Select the coneShape node associated to the fog and set
- Volume Samples Override = on
- Depth Jitter = on
- Volume Samples = 12
5) Select the mib_light_spot and set
- Color with value > 1 (otherwhise it isn't bright enough)
- Shadow = on
- Factor = 0
- Attenuation = on
- Cone = 4
6) Set the spot light to have shadow maps.

I have attached a test render done with this method. I hope this is what you where looking for.
