I enrolled on the Splinegod character modelling course and thought it was excellent to be honest. I managed to scratch a few of the cd's and emailed him asking for a replacement, offering to pay shipping etc , he agreed , but i never heard a thing back from him after that , im an easy going guy , maybe too much so , but browsing the forum tonight and feeling like getting back into using LW it reminded me how mad I am at him and how much I miss LW , am I wrong , maybe it was my fault for scratching my course cd's ? Then I remember I spent hundreds of UK pounds on it and don't feel so unreasonable. Larry if you're reading this , I have no issues with your training , its excellent but I hope you get in touch with me so I can at least get what I paid for. Cheers.

If you spent 100's of UK pounds on something then didn't look after it that's not the fault of the supplier.
If you buy a car then crash it the car manufacturer isn't responsible for supplying a new one!

If the goods were defective when you recieved them, then you're within your rights to ask for a replacement.

It was generous in the extreme for Splinegod to agree to give you new CDs, if he forgot to send them have you tried emailing him again before bringing it up on a public forum?

Well, I'm retracting my earlier comments. It was a petty complaint, and not a fair one since he can't defend himself here on the forums.

Splinegod is banned!? Wow how did that happen!

For the record I've always found him to be enormously friendly, helpful and generous with info. His teaching materials are also excellent. I'm sure you're experiences are due to unfortunate circumstance or misunderstanding. - Baz

As I recall..... discussions in the LW forum can become heated - and MANY posters end up just coming on the forum to stir things up and tout their own software package and how lacking LW is. Larry had a tendency to be a tad zealous in his replies. I happened to agree with most of them but the forum mods didn't. Things apparently escalated and he was banned.

I am personally schizophrenic when it comes to Larry. On one hand he has been great for the LW community and has helped an incredible number of people. On the other hand... I have bought his CD's (most recently Quadruped Rigging from Kurv) but wouldn't buy it directly from him because he was charging outrageous S&H for just one CD. But that may just be me.

Larry can be extremely passionate about LW and end up rubbing people the wrong way. That said, we are better off with him here than not. By here I mean the LW community - obviously NOT in CGTalk. Too bad....

Old stories are often bad stories. Never mind...

I just received the Get into Modeling with Splines DVD. I have to say I am impressed with the thouroughness of its content and with the freebies on the disc such as the sample character rigs.

I am an avid reader, but this DVD has been working well for me. I can follow along with a modeler session open alongside the tutorial videos. Let us say I don't understand something, I just rewind a bit and watch and listen again. Unlike a book, he is actually doing the work "in front of you." This makes it much harder to "lose a step."

CGT likes to "soft ban" now, meaning you can log on and view content but you can't post and I think you won't show up in the member list.
I believe part of the reason is so you don't have people with "BANNED" showing up under their names in threads, which might be unsightly. Let's face it, if you do a search of anything CA related there will be at least one post in each thread by Larry.

Of course then you'd have no idea, unless you're up to date on your gossip, that he was banned.

Your definition of "soft ban" is wrong and not how cgtalk works. And the information revolving around Larrys banning is also incorrect. I'm all for letting a conversation run, but since nobody knows the whole story were back to a thread full of misinformation and innuendo, which is my cue to close this.

As administrator I will explain what "soft banning" is, even though that is entirely your own term. There are two types of action on this forum that we take against troublesome users - Zarathustra, having experienced both yourself, I am confused as to why you even require any clarification on them, but here goes:

Blacklisting - a users posts go to a validation queue instead of going straight onto the forum. This is for habitually troublesome users who haven't yet said anything that would warrant a ban, but whose posts we prefer to keep an eye on.

Ban - this is an outright ban on a users account. They can no longer post, they can no longer send/receive PMs, they can basically no longer function on the site. And we do this when we don't want a user to come back to this forum. We really, really don't care what people think if they see the word "banned" under a username, and we don't owe anyone, whether that be the banned user or the rest of the forum users, any explanation for why they have been banned. Needless to say this option isn't used very often, but when it is, it is always for a good reason and is never done without consulting the rest of the forum leaders.

The action you describe as "soft banning" simply does not exist.
