View Full Version : Character: Berry Eating Alien
Hello,
Here's a WIP of an Alien I've been modeling. I've still got a few tweaks and some tri's to convert to quads but I can see light at the end of the tunnel. :bounce:
It's a sub-D model created in Lightwave7.5
Here's a link to a better quality version of the image and also a sub link to the paper drawing 'm basing the Alien on.

texture is ok :)
its one thing: that skin on back is unnaturally wrinkled...
but its only my opinion :)
Generally nice creature:buttrock:

Thanks Araval,
Yeah the texture is simply the backdrop picture I used as reference wen I modeled it. It's only planar mapped from the side but I was getting impatient and just wanted to see if I had to model in more wrinkes and similar detail or if a suitable bump map would give me the result I want.
Soon I'll start on a much higher res set of maps.
A proper start on the surfacing. I haven't finished any of the maps yet but I'm salvaging what I can from the original drawing.

Balance seems off- like he has great trouble moving with any speed. Intentional?
Hi Dearmad,
Dunno about being off balance too much. The intention was to arrange him like a classic canti-lever. Visually and weight-wise he may look forward heavy but I'm hoping that's because I haven't added the mass of hair the original concept has, yet.
Thanks for looking :wavey:

Dude, the textures are awesome, lots o details...keep it up
Here's a link to the latest update.

I've added most of the hair except for the long strands that start at the back and go down the sides.
The skin/hide surface is nearly done from a bump-mapping point of view but I need to start on colour and specular info next.
The hair/fur is done with Sasquatch-Lite and I'm still finding out how it lights the strands. I need to work out why I'm getting some funky lighting on the fur in certain areas (I didn't tell it to give me green fur on the view on the left etc.)
C&C welcome.

Wow! I think the critter is cool. Lightwave no less. I think the saslite touch was cool.:airguitar

Hey Bliz. Nice texturing job. The design reminds me a bit of those wierd creatures of Pieter Bruegel c.16th century.
Regards,
Terry
Cheers Fletchman
Cheers Terry, I'm usually more of a Heiromyous Bosch man but I managed to get one of these Bruegel critters real cheap from a bloke down the pub. It's running around the backyard at the moment but I manged to get it to lie down on the scanner long enough to get the side map. :scream:
Here's a small update with some long hair strands in place.
The eye, colour info and texturing on the extremeties are still WIP
[and the environment setting hasn't been started yet ;) ]

Looks like one of the alien's from Jabba's palce in the Star Wars redo.

I've managed to get back on this the last day or so. Here's the latest update.
I had ported it over to Maya from LW but have decided against the Maya avenue for now. I'll complete this in LW

Still haven't got the colour scheme locked down. Long way to go :scream:
Here's a Radiosity text

The GI and Saslite don't seem to be getting on too well. I'd have used Eki's Overcaster but it's broke for version 7.5c of LW
I think I'abandon the GI method and just use an upturned directional light to simuate the bounce from the ground.

That is a really neat creature, well done! everything looks really good, except, imo, the eye (WIP)- dunno if you still gonna put them in, but it needs some eyelids, Looks way to false atm without them. Its amazing how much expression the eye can convey, and how much getting the eye just right can alter the whole feel of the creature. Can't wait to see the finished model. Hope that helps :)
...I've been working on the feet and toes and the general overall colouration. I've lost the bump mapping under the eye I know that but I'll sort that out next.
I've got a week off work now so I should finish it soon =]-

I've finally started work on the environment. I've deviated from the original concept somewhat for something a bit more expansive [ I think :) ]

man that thing scares me...i really like the hair on the body and i think the eyes just a a perfect touch to the look. I wouldn;t want to run into one of them in the desert...great stuff

you need to work on dynamics, bend him a bit here and there
I changed the tree/bush back to something closer to the original concept.
