how does one store certain shader networks in XSI for later usage without saving them? what I'm trying to get at is, does sxi store loose shaders (shaders not connected to a shading engine)? ...or do I have to save a network into the library?

thanx

I'm not sure. Probably not what you want, but you can save at any point in a network and it will save everything out from it so you don't have to save the whole network, just parts or dissconnect all and it will just save that one, and you can drag these from a browser onto a toolbar with an icon if you saved with render region on and can drag it from the toolbar into a rendertree later.

Material Shader nodes can be attached to groups and to render pass partitions. The groups or partions don't have to contain any members, so if you simply wish to store lots of shaders in a scene make a group or partition for each shader.

Meanwhile, it's probably easier to just create a library on your hard disk using a built in feature of XSI. If you have the render region on while you save out a shader, it stores the image in the render region as an icon for the shader. You can use the XSI browser set to icon mode and see preview images on all your shaders, then drag and drop the shader from the browser onto your scene geometry.
