Title: Frodo of the Shire
Name: Renee Bailey
Country: USA
Software:

This is referenced from a screencapture of my DVD at home - though it is clear I flipped the canvas horizontally, to change it up a little bit. I painted this in Photoshop - I am bad at keeping track but I think it took me at least 6 hours or so :)

I am a huge Tolkien fan - 3 tattoos will attest - so I figured in my efforts to improve my technical skills at digital painting I would use reference material that I loved and liked to look at. This one image happens to be one from the first movie "Fellowship of the Ring" (which fans recognize I am sure) that I feel really sums up the feel of the Shire and the innocence before the experience of Frodo's incredible journey. I hope I did it at least moderate justice.

I would really love to hear what crits you can give me on how I can improve my technical skills and any observations you have. I love feedback, and it really helps me see things. I have pretty tough skin, so please, give me the honest truth :)

Hmm, it just occured to me that not everyone on the face on the planet is as intimately familiar with Tolkien's works and the films as I... what narrow sightedness of me.

Here is my reference pic:

This is a screen capture of my DVD on my computer. I flipped it and looked at it to paint what I submitted above. No tracing or overlaying or anything like that.

So, any thoughts on how I can improve my technique? I would dearly love to hear some crits.

Bear in mind there is some bright-ass sun in my room, I made a different version, very sketch-y ( I can't see very well at this time of day) -- with some help from a friendly crit-giver at CA.org.

Nice colors.

I think the reason why his foot looks strange is that strong (curvy) light on his ankles and the dark spots near his toes (these are supposed to be fur or hair i think, based on what i've seen of the movie). Anyway they seem to distort the foot and kinda give the feeling that we're looking at the underside of his foot instead of the top side which is what is shown in the reference pic. Also there's some problem with the proportion of the body. I think you made the body too long and the legs too short.

I hope I was able to help. :)
