It's pretty nice! I think that you should add some elements in it in order to add depth and movement :) It's going to be great!
One thingie I've noticed : the perspective of the roof of the building is not exactly the same in the painting. the colours are lovely!

Just a couple quick things I noticed -- add some red to the highlight on the building -- it's really red in the reference.

Also, there isn't a highlight so big and soft on the mountains out there, it's super thin - perhaps clean it up with a hard-edged brush? Then again, you may not have wanted it to look exactly like the reference pic :)

The lighting on the two mountains on the right is a bit odd - they are brightest at a point where they face away from the sun.

Oh, and your sun seems to shine over the clouds more than in the original - thus, some more illumination on the mountaintops were appropriate...

Well I went and submitted this to the 2D gallery and was rejected.... Dont know why. Kinda put me down.

But here is another WIP of mine. I decided to do this famous picture of this afghan girl from the national geographic cover. any comments welcome, as i will be showing pictures of my work in progress. hopefully i could get some help or tips.

You may have been rejected because the painting was to much like the reference. I really don't know for sure. If you make a copy of the picture from National Geographic they will not accept that in the gallery because of copyright infringement concerns. It is OK to use other peoples pictures for practice, but I would recommend that you take and use your own pictures for reference, that way if you make a really beautiful painting it will be from all your own work and you can sell it, display it and do what you want with it. Keep painting you are off to a good start.

In your landscape there, I find the hard contrast edges and lightbloom are well defined btu the depth is very underdefined it's more likt an outline with a fill which lets it down a bit. Itseems a bit unfinished in that respect, same goes for other cylindrical buildings there. A bit of a shame imho because the colours are great and very believable. I think you should work on this some more :).

Thanks for the encouragement... I still dont understand on HOW to fix the depth problems. Mind giving me an example or a small area paintover or something?

thanks.

as for the national geographic picture, im not submitting that im only doing it for practice.
but the sunset picture i have permission by the photographer to do what i like to it, such as paint it and take partial credit for painting it. i still dont know why it was rejected though. maybe something is just screaming to me that its not finished, which its not.

edit: as for the sunset looking too much like the reference. i did all of it on my own, not any type of paintover just simply having the picture cropped above my painting area to look at.

For the landscape painting, I agree that you should show some depth/perspective. You could try putting another smaller hill between the two in the middle. You could also try putting a couple of those cylindrical thingies in the foreground, and maybe even put some further out. Or you could try using trees or some sort of greenery. My only other comments would be that the right side of the painting seems too empty. It won't need much, maybe a small flock of birds or a radio towers f some sort. Secondly, the lighting on the hills to the right definitely have an unnatural look to them with that lighting. It should be easy to fix, maybe try a simple gradient on a seperate layer. Darken the bottom and get lighter as you go up.

Overall your painting looks great.

As for the lovely lady you're working on, there's not enough facial features to give alot of critque. But, if she's to look sad then her mouth needs a little work. Her mouth looks more like it's smiling a little, or maybe just emotionless. And her eye makes her look angry since it's not open all the way. You're off to a great start with her skintones. (Wich is something I have a problem with.)

Looking forward to some updates.

Thanks Wiggin. I will definately make some changes to the sunset picture sometime soon. Taking your thoughts into consideration seems like it would help alot. For some reason when I painted the sunset painting I didnt use pressure settings on my brushes so eveything was alot different from what I am doing now with the girl portrait. I am still kind of new to this wacom tablet and didnt realize I wasnt getting the full affect of what was capable. If that made sense...

Anyways heres an update of the girl. I worked more on her skin tone and nose, and just pasted the left eye on the right real quick because it was bugging me without one.

did alot of changes to the proportion of the head and location of the eyes lips and nose.

make the lips wider and the eyes larger. i might make the nose bigger to fit the eyes and mouth not sure yet. i will/might take the hood away and make hair flowing out everywhere.
