hi,

i'm about to install 9.6 update. wasnt in a rush but i'm getting annoyed with the "apply to scene" ambient occlusion bug (already reported here and in other forums), and i'd like to see if maybe 9.6 fixes it.

anyway, since some crashes are reported here & there with 9.6, i'd like to backup my 9.5 first and i'd like some advices first :)

i'd like to :

backup my current 9.5 install, with all folders & files
install 9.6
in case of problems, rollback to 9.5
but then what ?
can i just delete 9.6 install, including all files, and replace it with my 9.5 backup ?
i guess there will be a problem with registry then ?
so should i first properly uninstall 9.6, then just paste the 9.5 files in proper location and re-enter the serials ?
or is it not good at all ?

thx for any advice !

yes and you can actually just duplicate your 9.5 and run them side by side too if you need/want (which is a very good idea for most users "just in case")

if you just drag the maxon folder onto a CD or another drive - that is everything except user prefs and serails backed up. very quick and easy to do.

what i would suggest is to just append a 9.5 to the Cinema 4D folder and only rename an alias to the actual c4d applications so that any updates don't fail due to renamed items inside.

thx Dann !

so, if i understood well, my 2nd option is ok : uninstalling 9.6, paste back 9.5 files, re-enter serials.
i dont think i'll keep 2 installations tho. i'm struggling hard enough to keep things somehow organized ;)

i was surprised to learn from your post that "user prefs" are not bakuped. arent they stored in the "prefs" folder ? what kinda prefs would i loose with my procedure then ?

i'm not sure i completely understand the "paste back 9.5 files" part

you will have a complete cinema 4d folder of your 9.5 - so should you not want to use 9.6 you can just delete the existing 9.6 c4d folder and copy back the 9.5 folder.

on osx the prefs and serials are kept in the user/library/prefs folder so no they are not copied when you backup your maxon folder - and they are any changes you've made to the application preferences and the serial numbers.

if you decide to go back to 9.5 you won't have to re-enter any serials - they are essentially the same with just the new "module" serial number of 9.6 which 9.5 would just ignore.

i'd really suggest keeping 9.5 and 9.6 both until you are sure you are happy and have no issues - it is very nice to immediately go back into 9.5 to test against a situation you may have in 9.6 (or vice versa) after a month or whatever you feel comfortable with you can then just delete the 9.5 c4d folder and move on.

well, thats when my english goes uncertain i guess :) since i "copied" my current 9.5 files first, to back them up, then, in case i want to go back to it, i would just "paste" them back (after uninstalling 9.6, that is).
i was thinking "paste", like in copy/paste, maybe its not appropriate in this context/meaning.

i'm on pc. i thought that application preferences were stored in the "prefs" subfolder of "cinema 4d" folder. like in "CINEMA 4D.prf" kinda file for exemple.

indeed maybe i should consider this option. then i'm sorry but i have to ask you another question :D

so, i would copy my 9.5 install, rename it "cinema 4d r9.5", install 9.6 on the main, original, "cinema 4d r9" folder, but i'm not sure i understand correctly this :

rename an alias to the actual c4d applications so that any updates don't fail due to renamed items inside.

would be very kind of you to explain me this again. i dont get the alias renaming part. if i install 9.6 upon my current install, i thought that any upcoming updates should install there. or not ?

thx again !

You can install as many different CINEMA versions as you want, just make sure to put them in different directories. There is no need to copy things here and there, this will only distract you over time and lead to errors.
