Its been ahile sence i have posted here. i'm a 3ds max user normaly but i figured hh what the hell i'll give maya a shot.... and that was a BIG change!.

Ok to the question i normaly work with splines and polygons in max, my technique in max was toy make the torso out of splines and then i add cuts, cut out 2 holes for the chest if its a female model. and i'd make a gentral shape or out line of alfh a breast and then lath it... then arange verticies and then weld it on to the chest there the holes are. and i would make the hands and feet out of boxes and shape them accordingly.

On maya 4.5 i cannot find a welding tool, nore a lathe tool. nore a spline tool... Does Maya have any of this? because i kind of wanted to stick to my old max techniques. if so where can it be found.... the only option i have seen close to welding is combine... but that only does the exact same theing ass attatch does in max... this is rather hard converting... but i want to give it a shot... Thanks

you can use the curve tools to make surfaces (birail, square, loft, etc etc) , in the tool options, instead of nurbs , output the geometry to polys (play around with the settings a bit)

And Maya's lathe is called Revolve, under:

Surfaces > Revolve

Xellos,

try Edit Polygon | Merge Vertex and optional treshhold for distance to weld vertecies after combine operation,

and about the splines, my friend? becuase i make a cyclender type shape useing splines and then extrude the shape ( i do it this way because if i just do a 6 sided cylender i'll get extra edges on the top and the bottom of it ) and i don't want the extra edges.. thanks for the help, to those that answer my posts

In Maya splines are just called Curves.

I really think you had better read through the Instant Maya help file.

In Maya just press F1. Because there's too much to learn by just asking specific questions.

Well, I think so anyway.

Hi Xellos,

Welcome to Maya.

We have a PDF on our site to help 3dsmax users transitioning to Maya.

I hope this helps.

hmm.. I thought when you make a Cylinder in Maya, under options you can check wheather you want it capped or not.....
rather than just click create - cylider......click create - cylinder...but click the black box beside the word Cylinder for the options...

**Edit**

ok, seems only in Nurbs cylinders can you turn caping on and off...But in Poly Cylinder just scroll the bar to 0 for the divisions you want in the cap....and select the cap face and delete it after you make it...

well i figured out a tool other then curves simular to splines in max. "Create Polygone" i got the base shape of my torso now the hard part is using the lathe/revolve.. i cant get the setting right its spinning it backwords, and too far apartand i want it to spin on the z axes. the lathe tool in max is MUCH MUCH better. cuz i can see the result befor i make it final as where on maya i have to keep undoing and all i'm tryying to do is get a general breast shape... and its turning out to be very complicated, using the same spline>lathe technique because its not spinning the right way
I Dunno if i made any since

You don't need to keep undoing your lathing everytime, once you've done a Revolve you can edit all the settings from within the Channel Box on the right of the screen.

Hehe they wouldn't use Maya on LOTR etc if it were that silly!

Thank you all for the help!!! becuase of you i have been able to model half a torso so far!!! tomorrow when i have time i'll Mirror it.... I hope it has a refrance optione like max dose... becase that would be frustrating if it just made a clone... i'll look into that tomorrow. Thanks again peeple, and Thank you For the PDF that hellped alot!!!

well i did that the problem is it makes an exact replica of it. same side everything... i want the opposet side.

you have to duplicate the object with a negative scale on the mirror axis - e.g. x = -1

that didn't help much i am a total newbie....noy to 3d just maya in genral... so you need to be mosre spasiffic please.. there are 3 options each with 3 boxes behind them for numbers...

Translate| 0.0000 |0.0000 | 0.0000
Rotate| 0.0000 |0.0000 | 0.0000
scale| 1.0000 |1.0000 |1.0000

and thats under duplicate options

if you are a newbie then read the instant maya chapters/essentials/...

Translate| 0.0000 |0.0000 | 0.0000
Rotate| 0.0000 |0.0000 | 0.0000
scale| -1.0000 |1.0000 |1.0000
